Sly Stone Living off Social Security?

Image

It's unfortunate how all too often amazing musicians get screwed by their record labels. Sly Stone is now living off social security and moves between cheap hotels trying to make ends meet. Maybe he didn't read his contract thoroughly. Artists, especially musicians, should learn by now they need a lawyer with them whenever they sign anything. Thats what we pay lawyers for: read stuff and tell us why we should or should not sign.

    • Human nature always has had its ugly side...controll over others is a big one. Question is what to do about it?The truth shall set you free.

    • Saw him perform last summer in Santa Rosa CA - still has it in his performance and musical sound; had a great large band w/horn section and two hot female background singers. Down side is he was late about 5 or 6 songs (sounded great even w/out him on stage) then he enters, sings along w/about five songs, leaves and never returns. The band played on... that being said. Too bad he and others get screwed around by these vulture-like record labels!

    • While I do agree with the previous statements about how record labels have a long history of making $ at the expense of the artists, it should be noted that some of Sly's financial problems are self-imposed. Between susbstance abuse problems and very unpunctual / lax concerts over his lifetime, he could not re-claim his prior glory and in time, the fans (and money) left him.

Back up a bit Territp...as if substance abuse isn't a response to social/eocnomic/racial aspects in the great US of A (and any other country in the world). So you would fault Sly for his reaction to above mentioned? I recommend you investigate prior to stating an opinon as if it were fact. I feel and pray for those who can't break the bonds that enslave them; give it some slack is all I'm suggesting. Remember Janis, Jimmy and others who were basically 'pressured' out of life. Share the love...

    • that's a damn shame, and unfortunately not that unique, which makes it an even damner shame.

you're right, always get a lawyer. preferably a lawyer who hates other lawyers.
