Me Talk Pretty: Flame (Video w interview)

Mike_Johnston
I went to the Blender Theater in NYC the other night to see several bands. My friends Julia and Leon from Me Talk Pretty were my main reason for going. Me Talk Pretty has an interesting back story to the band in that Julia is from Romania and her accent is where the band came up with their name and Leon is originally from Spain. Also, the subject matter for the title track on their first full length album ANA is"unusual". It is based on an old Romanian folktale in which a guy seals his wife behind the walls of a castle he is building...

At any rate Me Talk Pretty has been having a lot of success lately being on the Warped Tour at least twice and this year being selected to participate in the Denny's restaurant chain's "adopt a band" program and being on the Today show.

I have known these guys for a couple of years and I know how relentlessly they worked to both make music and promote the band so they deserve all the good things that are happening to them.

I was planning on shooting some video with the band on and off stage but I didn't do my homework well enough because it turned out to be a Live Nation show and they weren't allowing video equipment in. That being the case I still wanted to tell you about the show but this band has something that is hard to describe without live visual aids. I found this video to use for illustrative purposes.

All the members of the band are talented performers and deserve mention but Julia seems to be the focus of fan attention. There is just something she has that draws people. I think it is a combination of both her excellent voice and her personality. Sure she is hot but not just in a visual sense and she doesn't need to use that to sell the band. She just comes across as being a very genuine, honest person who loves to do what she does and actually appreciates each and every fan.

As an example, I've seen guys from the audience at more than one show run out to a nearby market to buy her flowers after the show. I'm talking like 4 or 5 guys at a single show, none of which has ever met her before. Then they stand in line to say hi to her and get a hug and a thank you for the flowers. That's it, nothing more and every show the band plays the fan base builds and their fans seem to stay loyal over time.

Me Talk Pretty is a refreshing change in the rock world. They are on tour right now so check out their myspace for their schedule and if they are in your area be sure to drop by and see what I am talking about. Their next show in NYC will be September 11 when they are playing the Irving Plaza as part of being finalists in an MTV contest.
