Artists like T-Pain, Kanye West, and Lil Wayne have used this technology to sky-rocket their music to another level of entertainment. In Opposition, Jay-Z is beginning to lead a revolution against the use of Auto-Tune on his 2009 single "DOA" (Death Of Auto-Tune).

Would people think supermodels were just as beautiful if the photos weren't retouched? Does retouching a photo make the model any less beautiful? Or is it just a tool? Using Auto-Tune as an obvious effect is just playing with the tool's capabilities, I think. It's a fad that will pass, like the feedback craze in 70's rock.

I think that it's a good trend when used in moderation, which it hasn't since god knows when.
Hip hop's okay, but what happened to that raw, gritty feeling that it used to have? Are the hip hop artists more concerned about making money or conveying their message and being original? To me, auto-tune is hurting the genre a little bit with its excessive use. - 2 years ago

When I think about that bizarre computerized auto-tune sound, I think of Cher's "Do you believe in life after love?" - the first popular song on the radio that used it. Now Hip Hop has co-opted it, but do not blame hip hop for bringing this "photoshopped" sound into the world.

Are you serious? That's the dumbest argument anyone has. Rock 'n' Roll was a form of music. Autotune is a frigging piece of equipment. It's a studio trick that makes crappy singers sound like decent singers and crappy music.

actually the relevance is in people hating something out of ignorance - and here is what you are "ignoring" - music is subjective and not everyone is so focused on whether a vocal in the song is naked or not - I can speak for myself when I say music for me is ENTIRELY about the end result. Sure it is nice to consider the entire "package", the image, the performance, the work that went into the song. But I tend to consider how the music makes me feel now, in the present moment. And no amount of autotuning, detuning, non-tuning is going to change the fact that it comes down to the experience of hearing the music, bottom line. People that worry about autotune need to turn off their spellcheckers and wear clear plastic suits if they demand everything should be so naked.

So clearly being able to sing in today's music industry means absolutely nothing!!! Now could some one PLEASE get the radio DJs to announce what they play? Oh wait! What good would that do? radio only plays 10 songs on an endless loop these days!!!

general question. I am shopping for a camera, and don't know what to get.
The purpose for the camera is to post video to my website. I will be shooting alot of interviews. Mostly indoors, but will also get into some outdoors stuff.
My budget is $400 - $600.
What's best, flash memory, internal hard drive, dvd recording, or good ole' minidv?
Where can I find good mic's? Can I mount one onto my camera?
Is it completely necessary for me to purchase an HD camera for web postings? Just to many options, and I am already very unsure of what to get. At the end of the day, I want to be able to get good audio along with a good picture, and get the most for my money.

This is how we end up with no-talent bullshit artists like Michael Bolton...Its one thing to use it conservatively to cover up obvious mistakes, but when, say, Paris Hilton uses it to produce an entire album, it's utterly unaccpetable.
As an amateur musician I am constantly dumfounded at how little talent it takes to get famous. Fame these days is pure politics: Knowing the right people, and kissing ass in the right places. - 2 years ago

Talk Box,Vocoder, Auto Tune, whatever ! They can ALL be used in awesome ways & in ways that are just simply lame! For instance: Mind .in. a .Box ,Front Line Assembly & Skinny Puppy have used very strange voices in their songs & sounded totally awesome! & "California Love" wouldn't be even worth listening to with out the talk box that was used on that track! But then you have artist like Kanye West,T Pain, Cher, & several other people that just make weird vocals into annoying crap! Even Daft Punk who have used voice manipulators for pretty much their whole career ,managed to put out a few tracks where the voice was just all wrong! EVERY artist in music these days uses a vocal touch up in the studio! Some go & distort their voices, but if your distorting your voice, there are some things that MUST be remembered! Deep robot voice + Awesome! High Pitch voice + Not so awesome! If artist would use a chorus effect rather then a cranking the pitch to about the sound of a small child's voice, I think their tune would sound a LOT better! But most of the people using the high pitch AutoTune voice these days are rappers! & MOST rappers can't sing at all!!!In fact, as Kanye was so kind to demonstrate, MOST rappers can't do ANYTHING right!!!

Now that Antares released the Autotune app for your iPhone, maybe the over saturation of the sound will do itself in. It's all fun and games for the first five minutes. Personally, I feel that the best use of the "Robot" effect is used in Autotune the News.

i like what they said. old school hip-hop artists, nas, and jay-z don't use it because they are real ARTISTS. nas is anyway, and common. he's pretty much my favorite out there today. except for when he collaborates w/ mainstream artists.
too many people of "hip-hop" utilize it like nothing, but it's really annoying and no longer original. to me, if you can't sing or don't have the balls to appreciate your natural sound then you shouldn't be in the business.
this is why i don't listen to the radio or get into those mainstream people. real hip-hop doesn't need this shit. just a good beat and a message, not some tale of picking up bitches in the club while sounding like a dying robot.

The way I heard it explained by Jay Z on a Hot 97 interview was a little different than a "war" on auto-tune. He said he respects T-Pain and liked Kanye's album but the sound is getting overused. To paraphrase, he said something like "Everyone sounds the same. We'll all end up making the same record - that's corny."

Oh! So it's NOT a vocoder in the wrong octive then! But here's a simple fact,ALL major music production, weather it be the crap that's played on radio today, or actual talented musicians, they ALL tweek stuff in the studio! No one sounds 100% like they do on their CDs when they perform live right? (unless the happen to lipsync!) Come on! This is nothing new at all! The technology has been around since 1930!!! What's sad is that so many talentless idiots get their songs played 100 times on a single radio station in less then 24 hours!

There is no controversy here: auto-tuning is a studio tool, and any tool can be exploited to make someone with little or no talent, skill, or message seem like a big deal.
Clearly if you listen to any of the artists used as examples in this video (t-pain, drake, kanye, etc.), you're probably not interested enough in the art and craft of making music to care about auto-tuning anyway. Searching for good music is more than just flipping on MTV (or TV in general) and gobbling up whatever they're serving up this minute. Do some research by talking to informed friends, reading reviews, and visiting local venues regularly.
Forget about over-produced, chart-topping, cookie-cutter music and find that which shines for its genuine originality and message.

I think auto tune should be killed on all music style types......i think their are too many artists in every genre that can't really sing and are huge because of, I don't know, Disney Corporation! It makes artists lazy. they can go in and just throw down crap in the studio and then move along....there is not art in auto tune.

Auto tune shoiuld only be used sometime not all the time, just some of the time , but rappers ran it in the hole
I have seen dudes that can't even sing sound great ,
so what does that tell ya , The group ZAP back in the day
had the same sound but showed every on they did not use it on every tune they played , they showed they were more than that , so what does that say the so called AUTO TUNE ( i think maybe JAY Z is right )
I hear T Pain is trying to market it as ah toy ,,,
AH FUCKING TOY on ah keychain , you talk into it
play it back & you sound like that whining robot ! - 2 years ago

Yo Maeveeo, you can also download a T-Pain Auto tune app for your Iphone. Check it out and get infuriated by it at the App Store.
This whole thing is crazy really, thank god I dont listen to much commercial radio because i'd top myself. If Hip Hop artists are trying to use this to stay a step ahead then they are sadly mistaken and misguided. I thought original rhymes with dope beats was the way forward in Hip Hop?
Most heads will know that this is not the future of Hip Hop. But its firmly cemented itself in Pop music and while people are still putting the Artists hits at the top of the charts, the effect will be here to stay.
