Hip Hop Activists & Obama's Administration Attacked By Media

Striking a nerve in the Hip Hop community, two instrumental members of President Barack Obama’s administration were attacked in the media, labeled as “radical” and ideas compared to “Nazi propaganda.” Anthony “Van” Jones, Special Advisor for Green Jobs, who announced his resignation on September 6, and now Yosi Sergant, Director of Communications of the National Endowment for the Arts, have been the topic of conversation on internet blogs, talk radio, and news stations, causing most controversy with Fox political commentator Glenn Beck.

Jones resigned from his position within Obama’s administration following an attack in which Beck referenced Color of Change, an African American political advocacy group co-founded by Jones, and accused him of being a radical and a communist. Globally recognized as a community organizer, Jones has used Hip Hop culture as a vehicle to promote awareness among young people to combat injustice and inequality. The Ella Baker Center for Human Rights, another organization co-founded by Jones, has been monumental in community organizing and activism, paving the way for a new generation of Hip Hop activists in the mid '90s with projects like Third Eye Movement and Silence the Violence. The Ella Baker Center has also funded various Hip Hop compilation albums including Shame The Devil: Hip Hop Tells The Truth About The Prison Industrial Complex featuring Zion I [click to read] and Amp Live, and Wartimes: Reports From the Opposition featuring artists like Goapele and CES One, with commentary from Jones himself and political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal.

East coast emcee and political activist, Jasiri X, as well as Hip Hop journalist and author, Jeff Chang, have both openly voiced their opinions about Jones’ resignation. Jasiri recently posted a video on his Myspace page titled The Crucifixion of Van Jones which streams clips of Jones, Beck and Obama. On Chang’s blog, he discussed Jones’ role in the community, “[Van Jones] brought inner-city youths to anti-prisons and environmental justice agendas using Hip Hop.”

    • I don't think that he should have resigned.

Those who dislike the Obama admin is trying to
scare people and take advantage of that fear.

I thought people were much smarter than that.

Some hatefull opponents will take any means to create hysteria. Learn from history & do not condemn people for their beliefs.

      Case by case basis.
I was reading somewhere, someone who attacked Pres O was saying 'well they said Bush was a Nazi and killer" "Why shouldn't we say the same of Obama?"

What? so their whole thing is they want revenge in name calling. continue the cycle?

Today by our post office i saw a group of people manning a table, with Pres O's pic with a hitler stache
there were three older white people and one black guy behind the table. Two weeks ago there was a white young man at the table with the poster of Obama crossed out.

So it seems to me that certain groups or people are
taking some serious actions. Though I cannot remember Bush opposers by my post office with
this type of operation goin on anytime during the 8 years that Bush was in office. Bush admin created & absolute leadership where no one could question, stagnation, no change.

So the freedom to speak up is being used on the wrong guy. --way to go & stand up to make a better America, where were you guys when Bush was in office to question the dictatorship?

Now that we are on the way back to a true democracy you want to persecute instead of helping the leader solve & find solutions. some are trying to create more problems instead of being part of the solution.

Thus, I have to question who is generating or creating a panic about this new admin who actually wants to help America? Who is paying off people to
create false stories & agitate the people & put fear into people.

Learn from history & don't fall for it. Because this administration should be about chaning things for the better in America, how can they do that when they have to spend precious time on proving useless accusations, fake theories, instead of helping.

So it leads us to believe that only people who do not want to heal America are the people who ruined it in the first place.
