U.S. racism 'everywhere,' says Dave Matthews

Image
JulyJones
"Of course it is! I found there's a fairly blatant racism in America that's already there, and I don't think I noticed it when I lived here as a kid. But when I went back to South Africa, and then it's sort of thrust in your face, and then came back here -- I just see it everywhere. There's a good population of people in this country that are terrified of the president only because he's black, even if they don't say it. And I think a lot of them, behind closed doors, do say it.

Maybe I'm paranoid about it, but I don't think someone who disagreed as strongly as they do with Obama -- if it was Clinton -- would have stood up and screamed at him during his speech. (Shakes his head) I don't think so."

-------------

I'm neither here nor there about his music but it's a nice interview so the full article is worth the read.

perhaps there is some rascism still around in the political world, but those old farts will be dead soon, and our brainwashed materialistic generation will take the helm.... god help us.

    • taking Wilson's comment out of the context of --this is the president of the United States you are heckling, and you sir, are supposed to be an honorable statesman -- well, sure, standing by itself you could argue that it wasn't racist, but I think Dave's point was that in the context of racism, heckling a black president is somehow more permissible than heckling a white president ever would have been...course now it is South Carolina...which is kind of a racist statement too, the racism being implied by the context of what I am attempting to do with that statement.

    • no it is not racist to oppose Obama's policies, no it is not racist to disike him because of his politics. It is however, racist to compare him to a monkey, distribute pictures of him in full Zulu garb and liken him to the worst mass murderer in human history.
There is racism everywhere, not much can be done to over come several generations of indoctrination to hate those that are different. We are all guilty of it, from time to time, regardless of how enlightened we see ourselves. The only thing to do is not let it rule us, to see eachother as we really are and to try move past the ignorant that still cling to old ways. Change has come, believe it and no amount of prime time posturing will stop it, reagrdless of what the talking heads on fake news channnles tell you.

    • You might be a racist:

If you think that a czar is unconstitutional... you might be a racist!

If you are opposed to a government run health care system... you might be a racist!

If you think that it is unAmerican to bow before the Saudi King... you might be a racist!

If you think that the stimulus plan has been an utter failure... you might be a racist!

If you think that this administration is driving the deficit up at alarming rates... you might be a racist!

If you think that this is a nation based on Christian values... you might be a racist!

If you think that communism and socialism are NOT the solution... you might be a racist!

If you value the 1st Amendment, but think that the media is state-run... you might be a racist!

If you are sick and tired of the race card being played
... you might be a racist!

If you are a racist according to the current liberal agenda... you might just be an American!

If you make light of racism by associating it with everything that isn't racist...

I think the point you are trying to make is that not everyone opposes Obama because they are racist, and I think liberals would agree with you on that point. That being said, the issue that is being brought up is the fact that there are many racists in your midst. If you believe that racism still exists in America, then you would also agree that the white racists are onboard the "Oppose Obama Train". So when liberals call out individuals based on their racist behaviors and comments, try not to take it personally... unless you are a racist.

NOT because they hate his policies, NOT because they think he's moving way too fast, or they disagree with his taking over private businesses and firing CEOs, NOT because he's already killing us with a deficit that we'll never pay off and no end to how much more debt he wants to add, but because of THE COLOR OF HIS SKIN!

How arrogant can he be? What a damn narcissist!

He needs to go hang out some more with his good friend and mentor Rev. Wright if he wants to see some racism. And by trying to play the race card himself, it makes me think he's racist.

Having America elect a black President could have been a big blow to this Groth industry...and they need to see to their future stay bright with lots of expansion and keep it growing!

    • It's interesting how the same people pop up to decry racism whenever there is a post made about it. It was not even 50 years ago where White Americans domestically terrorized Black Americans through, lynchings, hangings, beatings, etc. Anyone believes this hostility and bigotry simply went away is only kidding themselves.

When Obama's wife said "This is the first time I have felt proud to be a American" ..none of the sign holding by a few nuts on the right can match Obama's Mentor and none of it can match having as a long time friend William Ayres who did not just say bad things but Did Bad things like Blow up Buildings including the Pentagon . you cant compare a few nuts in the croud to Obama's Closest friends!

    • When I see democrats claiming people who disagree with Obama are racists, when I see democrats perpetually invoking the race card, when I see Jimmy Carter and Maureen Dowd call those who disagree with Obama racists, when I see this same Jimmy Carter (during the election campaigns) call Obama a "black boy", with not a word of reproach from his fellow democrats- I know that racism is alive and well, and being used as a tool for the Leftists political gain. They love perpetuating racism, and yelling "fire" when there isn't even so much as a wisp of smoke.......www.nbra.info

This is the same bullshit I am so tired of hearing. Idiots taking words out of context and trying to make something out of it. You are simply repeating ignorance you have heard from right wing bloggers anf talking heads. If you had bothered to listen to the entire sentance, Jimmy Carter said that "that a Black boy who GREW UP, under less than ideal circumstances, now had the chance to become a nominee for President"
Probably a poor choice of words, but not at all racist.

For the record, we're only 9 months in. Seriously, before people start freaking on him because he hasn't gone through with any major "change", at least give him 2 years. After 2 years, go for it.

But I still don't see how fascism has anything to do with this. At all.

Too true! I remember people calling Bush fascist, when he was really just an idiot with a lot of rich friends and stupid megalomaniac ideas that basically fucked us over for the next few decades (hopefully less). He wasn't smart enough for fascism.

Obama's policies tend toward socialism, not fascism, as you seem to know. As the nephew of one very happy and secure Norwegian uncle (who gets health care for him and his family no matter what happens to him or his job), I'm more than willing to give socialism a try.

Cheers to not using words one doesn't understand.

In my opinion it is no different than a 1000 years ago besides the fact that there are some laws protecting us...to an extent. The underlying current of racism is as strong as ever, the only thing we can do is not participate in the hype of division and be living examples of what we could be as the HUMAN SPECIES.

      atalanda...

Don't be ignorant. President Obama IS 50% white. He is 50% black. Why does everyone call him black? Why doesn't he get called white instead? After all, he was raised by white grandparents and he only saw his one black parent a couple times in his life. What makes calling him black anymore correct than calling him white? Does he really hate white people like some people claim? So much so that even though he is split right down the middle with his racial makeup, he leans to the black side...

Perhaps it is because the black community was much more willing to accept him than the white community. He could have received all of the love in the world from his mother and grandparents, but outside of the family construct, he was probably left with limited acceptance.

People and their cultures are beautiful, being rasist is limiting yourself from meeting some interesting people who happen to be Latino or Asian or Black. We should all just increase the peace and forget about the color of our skin, we are all apart of the human race and thats all that matters.

I can agree with that, but I think where we have to be careful is making sure we afford everyone the same standard. Obama should not be automatically heralded as the man who is going to turn our country around just because he is a young minority. The fact is, he has the country's best interests at heart just like every other President before him. He's simply sticking to his principles and what he believes is going to work. I can't fault him for that, even though I do disagree with a lot of his policies.

And for even Obama to say racism is the cause of folks being disgruntled is nothing but bullshit. How arrogant can he be to think that people couldn't possibly have a problem with his policies, so it simply MUST be the color of his skin. What a narcissist.

I don't believe that Joe Wilson's actual comment was racist. Of course it wasn't. But based on his track record, I do believe that he is a racist.

Therefore, I find it difficult to believe that his emotional outburst was not motivated by his core beliefs.

That being said, I do feel that many people of many races have very legit and non-racist reasons for questioning Obama's policies, which is very healthy.

Joe Wilson is not one of those people.

Atalanda is right and that's what I was going to point out. Racism doesn't need to be explicity stated in words for it to be a very real, motivating, force.

The entire concept of race is a cultural construct, which is sad. As an Anthro major we learn that biological differences are statistically nonexistent. There are more differences between a tall and small white man, than a tall white and black man. The entire idea of race needs to be completely historicized.

But, that doesn't mean it doesn't exist as a cultural construct. It will continue to exist as long as people believe in it and support the entire concept of "different." We are defined by the way we are enculturated, and that is the identity we build and emulate.

It's not the Obamatrons that continue focusing on his ethnicity, its the people who are completely ignorant to their own actions and words that incite reactions by people who are actually ready to start pointing out the type of subversive racism that still exists. This has become an opportunity for many people interested in civil rights to start outlining issues that still need to be addressed.

Very true, well-spoken and fully agreed! However, I haven't recently been immersed in a society such as South Africa, and I happen to agree with Mr. Matthews. I haven't lived in an overtly racist area for many years, but I do remember seeing racism taught to children.

I think things learned at such an early age create a "permanent immersion"; in the sense that as adults those people will always see what they want to see unless a monumental effort is made by them to change. That's why I don't doubt that racism still exists in the way that's described above. It takes centuries (at the least) for that poison to be washed away.
I think your response about immersion was actually very succinct in more than one way. It is in this state of mind that racism is perpetuated. Could it be that Dave Matthews is recognizing the divisive self-righteousness that characterizes racism in a less advanced (less overtly violent) stage here in the U.S.? Could it be that he's currently hyper-sensitive to one of the core components of racism due to his recent experience?
