On Monday February 22, 2010 Popular Music Inc. unveiled its plans to create a new digital distribution platform. The move comes largely after the group has pondered amongst the ranks of the obscure in digital distribution behind CD Baby, IODA and others. The model created by Popular Music recording artist I. Write (Keith Freeman) focuses less on distribution outlets and more on helping artist reach a target audience. The label which has developed several partnerships with major labels like Sony and Universal, has also teamed up with broadcast, film, TV and management companies to bridge the gap between majors and independent. In a phone interview held on Monday, I. Write was quick to point out the advantages independents would benefit stating, " We offer everything from management services, to market research, distribution and major label shopping. Hell! We even health insurance. CD Baby can't offer that." Don't get your hopes up though. Popular Music is currently only accepting between 2500 to 5000 artist this year. "Because we want to provide all of our artist with outstanding results we can't get too ahead of ourselves. If we can improve on our efficiency we will allow for others. Remember, artist are still independent this isn't EMI." I. Write said. Popular music will begin taking applications in March.
