BBC confirms 6 Music and Asian Network closure

BBC director general Mark Thompson has told this staff that 6 Music and Asian Network will be closed down as part of a radical cost-cutting operation by the corporation.

In a briefing to employees, he also confirmed plans to shut down half the BBC website and place a £300m limit on spending for sports and imported shows.

While it's rubbish news, it only confirms last week's story in the Times that leaked these plans. With politicians clamouring over themselves to seem in sync with the growing campaign to save the stations (let's be honest, mainly 6 Music), and the impressive support generated on social networking sites, there's still a chance the station will be saved.

    • Parts of the BBC will be shutting down? And people are *complaining*? This is the death of the state media monopoly. Maybe now some non-state broadcasters will be able to broadcast something half-decent.

I don't care how much some of you like Radio 6, if you're such big fans then you should be paying money for it, not expecting "license payers" to pay for you.

haveyou ever heard commercial radio in the uk mate? its FUCKING TERRIBLE
6 used to play a little variety, and had high quality presenters . the question is, why was there no metal on it when every other genre was represented?

No, the question is why does the BBC exist? It crushes commercial business with it's instant and unjustified monopoly of our national media. Our commercial radio and TV would be significantly improved in all fields if the Beeb didn't squat on the entire market like a big expensive turd, as it stands commercial radio can barely get by with non-stop chart toppers and adverts after every song BECAUSE of shit like BBC Radio. Same goes for TV, C4 has to sell everything to stay afloat with shows like Green Wing, meanwhile the BBC can produce "Snog, Marry, Avoid" for the next century without ever having to prove its worth to anyone. It's crazy, immoral and harmful to creativity. I'm sorry that you're losing your favourite radio station but I'm joyous to see the BBC media turd is finally starting to decompose...

You want metal, go buy a ticket to a show... that's what I do. I don't see why TV owners should be expected to pay for you to listen to Judas Priest. Actually, listen to Planet Rock on DAB, they play some amazing metal if you tune in at the right hour.

    • If you missed out on the classic 6 music moments and unsure if you want to save the station, here's a great bit from the Adam and Joe show

    • we're all just pawns in a political game. mark thompson is an intelligent chap, he knows that the stereotypical bbc 6 listener is the sort of person who will protest this decision, with an averages daily listen of over half a million, thompson knows , that bbc 6 will not shut down. voice your opinion on facebook or wherever but the decision has already been made.
