the music industry has gone through changes; it's no secret at this point. physical discs have been largely overshadowed by their digital counterparts, virgin stores out-competed by online stores, and giant record labels jumped by smaller -- often artist-operated -- labels.
it all sounds like music to the environmentalist's ears, really. but while much of the shift is allowing consumers to enjoy stacks of music without accumulating stacks of plastic on their shelves, there's still much the industry can do to conserve, reduce its footprint (particularly during artist tours), and use the power of broad-reaching media to help support the causes about which we care most deeply.
here are a couple projects worth checking out:
http://music.onepercentfortheplanet.org
a music compilation that aims to raise money and awareness for environmental non-profits all around the world through the work of 1% for the Planet, the environmental non-profit behind the album. The album features over 40+ artists -- the likes of jackson browne, grace potter, g. love, josh ritter, jack johnson, and others -- that have graciously donated rare or exclusive tracks to the cause. 41 tracks for $9.99.
http://greenmusicgroup.org/
a new coalition that aims to bring about widespread environmental change within the music industry by setting new rules of engagement -- environmental guidelines and best-practices that artists can use to reduce their own environmental footprint -- and using the megaphone of the music industry to bring about greater awareness for environmental causes.
know of any others? let me know in the comments!! -jake
