Nathan Michael Wilkie was charged with offensive behavior as he waited in his car listening to Australian rapper Kid Selzy, while his mother was grocery shopping.
Police heard Wilkie listening to an explicative filled song, which they deemed offensive and derogatory towards women.
The Herald Sun reports that the case will go to trial in June, where Wilkie is expected to plead not guilty to the offense.
Kid Selzy himself plans to attend the trial, after Wilkie’s mother posted a message on his Myspace page.
"Unfortunately he saw me (his mum) coming out of the local supermarket with shopping bags and left his car running and music playing to help me with my bags and the local cops pulled in, Mrs. Wilkie wrote.
Kid Selzy told The Sun the whole ordeal was a waste of tax dollars.
“From what I believe, everyone has the right to their own opinion. I have lost two of my best mates in the last couple of years in tragic circumstances and I feel that listening to his music relates to life," Kid Selzy said.
Kid Selzy’s album The Creepshow will be played during the trial, which is slated for June 11th.

Tell me something. What's the difference between the lyrics of a rap song, and the Ghetto Compton thing in San Diego? They're both free speech right? I won't listen to rap music, it's shit in my opinion, but I won't be going to a Compton Ghetto party either, it's also bullshit. So why the big uproar about one and not the other. Both are free speech, both are protected, yet some college students are SOOOOO bothered by it, that they are protesting the party. Fucking don't go if you don't like it. I don't like square dancing either, but I don't protest it, I just don't go.
College students jumping on the bandwagon, shit has been going on for years.

Listening to crappy music is a poor life decision, but that's no justification for policing people's listening habits.
There's some really good Hip Hop in Australia, like The Herd, The Tongue, Combat Wombat, Unkle Ho, etc.

But at what volume was he playing his music? what were the lyrics? were they vulger? if so then a store parking lot is not the place for it. Show some respect to the public or the PoPo will come a knocken.

agreed. i am all for freedom of speech, blah blah. yet i have a purse that says "F**k You" on it, and if i'm in the grocery store, i turn it around to the back so the offensive term isn't shocking the old ladies crowding up the aisles.
it's just courtesy. - 2 years ago

My bro got ISS for singing tupac at school once. This is just messed up! Everyone should be able to bump music as loud as they want. Why? to share moods and create a diverse atmosphere. I love walking around and seeing old people not having a choice but to hear some rap blaring in the strolling cars. Heheh. That's just me ;0)

It is a sign of a police state when the police become the judges of good taste and can arrest anyone they deem to be not in good taste! While I myself am not a fan of rap,for the very reasons the police cited,no way do the police have the moral and ethical right to nail this kid! In a free society all people have the right to self determination,to choose for themselves where and how to live, not the state! How can a form of music be made illegal leading to your arrest? Pin a medal on this kid for choosing to fight this overly intrusive invasion on the rights of the individual!

You loose the right to have fun when it intrudes on others. The form of music is not what is in question but at what volume it was being played..

oh come on, now! Even though the original title is the same, let's not go all 1984 over this. The kid wasn't arrested for listening to rap music. He was arrested for listening to rap music at an extreme volume in a public space. that's a wee bit different than the quote MAN unquote coming down on you for listening to music in privacy in your own home. Even if this guy had been blaring Waltzing Maltida at full force they would have hauled his butt in

somehow i doubt that. and there's no way you could prove your speculation. maybe if the article didn't include this tidbit then you'd might have a point:

Frankly I don't care what people listen to, just don't force me to listen to what your listening to by having your volume so high and your bass so turned up that I can't hear myself breath, or my heart beat.
Loud noise is a nuisance regardless of the genre.

True. but why not just wait for that punk kid to come tearing out of the parking lot almost running down some pedestrians before arresting him. Then they'd at least have a legit case. The music is one thing for us kids, but the driving!! like they're tryin to prove something. i say, grow up. ...and turn your music down dammit

IMHO grocery store does not equal a inside voice profanity free zone. And a cop who spends there time cleaning up the youth music listening scum from it's parking lot is approaching a functional definition of useless

Talk about a misleading headline...He was arrested for blasting profanity in a grocery store parking lot.
He called the cops "useless," which, I'm guessing, is why they arrested him instead of just giving him a warning.

They're doing this with videogames too. They refuse to issue a 18+ rating for games so anything that's deemed too violent is banned. Australia really has been going down the drain in terms of censorship.

...lol...thanks for the leg up...but, and I'm assuming here, methinks it may have had more to do with volume and smart mouth, and leaving car idling...BUT, if it was purely to do with content of lyrics, well, I AGREE, that's BS, and opens up a whole lot of pandoras' boxes, and a precedent, if set, will make us appear a bunch of backwater morons...thanks, Xiola...
