After reading the article, do artists need record label in the digital age?
BBC music reporter Ian Youngs reports on the IFPI (International Federation of the Phonographic Industry) statement that new artists still need record labels to succeed in the music industry.
With stories reporting on new stars finding audiences and stardom through myspace or other online outfits, the IFPI struck back and reported all those bands still needed a record labels to further their musical careers.
The article adds that bands like Radiohead who survived by going it alone, only do so because they established themselves with fans through a label first.
"But Jeremy Silver, chief executive of the Featured Artists' Coalition lobby group, said labels were signing fewer artists than ever because budgets have gone down, and artists were beginning to be able to make a living without them."

what about independent record labels? They tend to act more like a good friend then a boss. You get to do your own thing, but you still have a solid backup.

That's true, I wonder if the lessening importance of bigger labels will help build or weaken the independent labels. Hopefully they'll get stronger and help more newer acts compete against some mainstreams.
