SXSW Music: Bomba Estéreo, Slow Club, and We Were Promised Jetpacks

SXSW is hard on consciousness.

Yoga, sacred crystals, and acupuncture won't help you to reach clarity during the festival. Free alcohol, sleep deprivation, and sunburns prevent you from thinking clearly.

Luckily you don't need all of your faculties to enjoy great music.

I was only Austin for two days of the SXSW Music, but I got a chance to see some cool bands.

we were promised jetpacks.

I was surprised that We Were Promised Jetpacks didn't make it to Asylum's 'Wacky SXSW Band Names' Awards. This Edinburgh band killed it with their high energy. Even though the lyrics were muffled it was obvious they were coming straight from the vocalist's heart. The band looks very young, but their myspace page assures us that "we are older than ghostbusters 2. we are younger than ghostbusters."

Slow Club

Slow Club have the distinction of being the most artist on my iPod. I've played their EP Let's Fall Back In Love 56 times. Their performance was marred by a lack of sound guy, but Austin's tweenage hipster crowd loved the Sheffield duo. After several technical setbacks they unplugged, and gave a memorable performance at the edge of the stage just above the crowd.

Bomba Estéreo

Bogota's Bomba Estéreo rocked Levi's Fader Fort with their cumbia-electro-punk. Crowds of photographers tried to get the perfect shot of the group's beautiful and explosive singer. I was already a fan, but this excited crowd of tastemakers made me think this Spanish-language band will achieve crossover success. If cumbia is the future. I have only one question. Will somebody teach me how to dance cumbia?

I left Austin, now I'm in Monterrey to celebrate another music festival, which begins bright and early... MtyMx.
