MGMT stream entire new album after leak

MGMT has whacked second album Congratulations on their website and made it available for streaming, in response to it being leaked last week.
In a statement, they said:
"Hey everybody, the album leaked, and we wanted you to be able to hear it from us. We wanted to offer it as a free download but that didn't make sense to anyone but us."
Smart move. Rather than fans being tempted to download a leaked copy in order to hear it asap, they can sate their curiosity with the streaming version and then buy it as soon as it is released.
To listen to it, check out their site.

people need to realize that bands make money from tours. download away and share with your friends. then see them live and buy a t-shirt.

Some bands do (usually the bigger ones) but not all. The more albums people buy, the more money the bands can put in to putting on the best tours.
Also making an album costs money and record companies are less inclined to take risks by funding recording costs for the more eclectic, experimental bands in the hope they'll make it back when the tour comes around, if they can play it safe and sign the more MOR artists who are more likely to sell 'units'.
I reckon if you like an album, send some money the band's way whenever you can. If you fancy seeing them live, buy a ticket.

for sure. i guess my comment was geared at smaller bands. many shows i go to i tend to hear the same thing over and over and that is to see them live and buy some merch, not much care on how you get the album. most of the time at the shows i'll buy the album even though i downloaded it months before. i feel better about handing the money to the band and not best buy.

It's Working & Siberian Breaks are great but overall the album is just a little above average, maybe I need to let it grow on me. Oracular Spectacular had a few good songs aside from the singles. I think they did a better job with this album but I believe they have potential to create even better music.

Yeah. I am glad that through all this terrible commercial music, we still have genuine artists. I love this stuff.

I wasn't quite sure what to expect going into this. Obviously all the standout tracks from Oracular Spectacular still get stuck in our heads. This new album is different. The first couple of listens, the album is meant to be seen as an album instead of just having a few standout songs. That is something I love about the album. After a while, of course, we will all have our own standout songs. Which is better than for most everyone to just like the singles and not delve deeper into the album. I'm sure plenty did, just not everyone. This album forces you to do that, which is something to respect from MGMT. Congratulations is a great album, plain and simple. I'm definitely buying it!

I can understand why people would want to download albums illegally, but downloading one that was going to be free anyway sounds wrong and cruel to the artists.

Mcellie:
Even when Radiohead made 'In Rainbows' free online, people still downloaded it from P2P sites. Some habits just die hard, I guess.
I think in this instance MGMT planned to release it as a normal commercial release. When it was leaked, they wanted to make it a free download but opted for the streaming option in the end, perhaps to keep the record company happy.

It was never going to be free, while I am no stranger to p2p. This makes me real sad, I love those guys, and was looking forward, and am still going to buy the album, out of support.
