M.I.A.'s new music video for 'Born Free'

This is the new M.I.A.video, for her song Born Free. (It's NSFW for graphic violence and nudity.)

This video portrays a dystopian world where redheads are beaten and executed for being gingers. (but, GINGERS DO HAVE SOULS!!)

Redheads are obviously supposed to represent historically oppressed peoples. A white American audience, is supposed to think: "Oh yeah, this isn't that far from the realities of real people across the globe."

I bet this video resonates slightly differently in the UK, where there is a more pronounced redhead prejudice.

Ginger Nuts, is a derogatory term for a redhead in Britain.

Do you like the new M.I.A. video?

    • It's unfortunate that many people reduce M.I.A to some hipster popstar or even put her in the same conversation as Lady Gaga. At work I'm forced to listen to Hardcore/ crust at work all day..which is supposed to be at the front lines of "political discourse"..but it's a bunch of unaffected American kids looking for material to sing about..fake even with good intent. Not the case with M.I.A....in her albums you get a sense that these songs are like the theme songs for the oppressed. Doing a video like this won't garner her much in sales and they most likely went into this project knowing this. Up most respect..

    • to me the music sux. fatboy slim and chemical brothers covered this "music" a decade ago.i dont find the videos content redeeming either, its metaphorical for persecution sure but it didnt provide anything new in terms of reaching people.
it seems like a waste when thier is footage of chechyn soldiers doing this to civilians, nazis to jews, shia to sunny, why create a ficticious nwo inhumanly trearing people when there are real ones doing it.if she brought a new angle that is seldom seen and less understood great but a child can recognize the what it is.i doubt the people of darfur or somalia are really gunna benefit from this, wich is what this is about.

    • This video is incredible. At first I thought it was just gratuitously violent crap, but around the third minute, when the "trick" of the video is revealed, it becomes an absolute masterpiece.

      The song is awful.

    • anyone who thinks this video is 'powerful' , 'important' or even 'meaningful' seriously has to no idea of what they are talking about. the political allegory (people with red/ginger hair being hunted like animals or illegal immigrants) is so poor and obvious its just lame. how long did it take the creative team to come up with that metaphor? 2 or 3 seconds? The production value of the video is ridiculously high compared to M.I.A mostly quite interesting, prior videos. The video is about how capitalist, police states can/could/are abusing people yet she uses the very same tools/aesthetics of those states/cultures to make her video! all this video is to shock. and thats all its going to to. its not going to leave you with anything deep or meaningful. showing an armed man hitting people for no apparent reason and blowing up a kid does not make for important/memorable anecdotes. way to go mia. i wouldnt usually say stuff like what i m about to but there u go: she sold out. i mean how can u go from making ur mixtapes all on old tapedecks to this overhyped atrocity?

      what a shame.

This is definitely true, there's nothing wrong with Lady Gaga, but not every female artist has to sound like her. Not that this needs to be an argument, but the reason people are saying Gaga is because she just made a 10 minute music video too I guess.

    • Haha just because her song was in Pineapple Express she can't exercise her creativity for you sheep? No it's not Lady Gaga's pointless shit where she's just random as hell for the wtf value.

This is a cool video and no MJ did not invent this style music video creative artists have been using the music video to express themselves since the dawn of man.

Don't pretend that you don't know what discrimination feels like, Magic6435....

Or are you just jealous/bitter that you're not the only one who can suffer from the effects of racism & bigotry? Sorry, but you don't own the issue of racism.

    • Well she is singing, after all it is a music video, but clearly the "mini movie" is to reflect what she's singing about. There's also a HUGE difference between the message MIA is trying to convey and whatever it is Lady Gaga meant to do. Not every music video is meant to provide the audience with a boner.

    • This video is a reminder of the sensitivity society must always maintain when regarding different groups of peope. One seemingly harmless derogatory term, act, etc. can escalate into blatantly disgusting actions. We as able-bodied members of society cannot set precedence for any kind of hatred.
