White Woman To Author N.W.A. Biopic

Film writer Andrea Berloff has reportedly been hired to write the biopic for famed West Coast rap group N*ggaz Wi
t Attitude (N.W.A.). Reports of Berloff's involvement made headlines over the weekend.

Berloff is writing "Straight Outta Compton," the story of the rise and fall of the Compton, Calif.-based group. Having a white writer on black-themed projects, especially biopics, is a fairly recent trend. Sheldon Turner penned a draft of the Rick James project "Super Freak," while Brad Kane wrote the draft of the Richard Pryor project that attracted director Bill Condon. Especially noteworthy is that the person tackling the N.W.A. adaptation is a white woman. However, the scribe, repped by UTA and Benderspink, is known around town for tackling true-life stories. On top of "World Trade Center," she wrote "The Fugees," adapting a New York Times article for Universal, about a group of international refugee soccer kids who settle in Atlanta. Former N.W.A. member Ice Cube will also be involved on the film.

The film is set up at New Line, with Cube and business partner Matt Alvarez producing along with Tomika Woods, the widow of Eazy-E. The MC died in 1995 at the age of 31, just a couple of weeks after revealing that he had been diagnosed with AIDS. It is not known whether the biopic will cover this period, but E's condition did bring the troubled group to reconcile their differences. (MTV)

Details on the film's overall premise were released last year.

The bond Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, Eazy-E, Yella and Ren formed surviving on the streets as teens is the foundation of the movie as we then see them go through trial after trial once they hit the big time. From manager Jerry Heller, to the fighting between Cube and Eazy-E, to the media backlash that they faced. The movie will show how the group was torn apart and then how they ultimately reconciled during the news of Eazy-E's bout with AIDs. While the script does touch upon Eazy-E's death, it is the ties that bind the group from their early days in South Central that bring them back together again as they say final goodbyes to Eazy. Initial reports said fans would be introduced to an in-depth look into the careers of each member.

New Line is developing Straight Outta Compton, an urban drama about N.W.A. The project will chronicle the rise and fall of the rap quartet, founded by Eazy-E, Dr. Dre, Ice Cube, and MC Ren, whose songs were so incendiary (i.e. "F--- tha Police") they were banned from radio playlists but still sold millions of albums. The film's producers, which include Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, and Tomica Wright (Eazy-E's widow), and Circle of Confusion entertainment, are now actively searching for a director along the lines of Curtis Hanson (8 Mile).     • Umm, two of the best "black" drama's I've seen are developed by David simon, a white guy. It doesn't matter what race you are it's only how well you understand the subject matter.

    • I really don't think her race or gender are a factor. Because this is non-fiction, she'll be sourcing all of her information and consulting with people who've experienced NWA, including Ice Cube and Dr. Dre. She isn't writing the Black experience, she's retelling the Black experience. So, it's really just a matter of putting all the facts together in a creative and entertaining way.

      what makes you say that? just because rape and domestic violence agents African american women shot up the year after "straight outta Compton" doesn't mean they were bad for the race.

      honestly i think BET wants to destroy black people, and gangster rap was created by the KKK to keep black men uneducated. seeing as the 1970s had the highest black male college enrollment and completion rate in american history. than gangster rap pops up in the 80's and we are now at a nearly 75% high school drop out rate for black men.

      it is not only a symptom when it is the soul of all that is wrong with my culture which the issues that i bring up have only had since high numbers since the advent of "gangster rap".

      I agree and a lot of Black people have been saying that for a long time. The content has no substance whatsoever. When Bob Johnson sold BET to Viacom the network lost all credibility in the professional African American community. When Tavis Smiley was let go, it sent a message to us that they were adapting that MTV teenage format.

      Besides the fact that gangs are stupid? Well, for starters, NWA may have been valid in their songs, but later on, the copycats pretty much sold a lifestyle that many outside that sphere glorified and later, faked...it consumed the culture, 2 rappers got shot and L.A. pretty much sucks now. NWA and other groups were using rap music to bring the problems in the Black neighborhoods and community to the forefront, but the problem is, nobody did anything about it...they just reveled in and escalated it. A bunch of people got rich, moved out the hood, but yet and still the problems are still here in L.A. today...

      I love your pix, salvador dali is the best artist of all times in my eyes. Her race might possibly be a problem because of the privilage see may have in not understanding the complexity of growing up in a do-or-die environment that spawned NWA. Noy saying it would be totally different from a black man or woman of modest privilage who could direct it, but no matter what your income is, if you are a minority (black) you have felt some sort of racism.

      No, my point is the project is irrelevant...NWA isn't really an important Black contribution to the point that they NEED a biopic. So its no surprise that someone NOT of the culture, would rush to make a movie about them and pass them off as relevant...more so, a group called NIGGAS WITH ATTITUDES...

      I wonder who gave this movie the green light?
