BEHRINGER - Weird Musical Instrument of The Week: The BLASTER BEAM!

The 'Beam was developed by Grammy and Emmy-winning musician/producer Craig Huxley for the soundtrack to "Star Trek: The Motion Picture" in 1979. Essentially a cross between a steel slide guitar and an Excelsior-class starship, the 'Beam is a big ol' 15-foot hunk of aluminum with bronze strings and moveable magnetic pickups. It's played with a mallet to strike the strings, and a metal slide about the size of a loaf of Romulan Sourdough. Since "Star Trek: TMP," the 'Beam has found itself in a number of other space operas including "The Black Hole," "Forbidden World," and "Meteor."
