And I was pissed when my high school wouldn't let me do Dance 10, Looks 3 in the 80s. Bohemian Rhapsody would have thrilled my music teacher compared to the things that I wanted to perform for the citizens of Vermont. :D

OMG! I can't believe this. What is happening in this country? I am so glad I no longer live in Wasilla. As a parent and grandparent of children who played in school bands I can't believe this numbnut would just throw away all their hard work for such a stupid reason. Of course these are the same people who elected Palin for mayor...a woman who wanted rape victims to pay for their own rape kits. I rest my case.

On a related note, someone should inform Sarah Palin of this little factoid before she tweets again.

What a bright and shining light of education! What about Michelangelo and Leonardo da Vinci? I've heard rumors!
What about Lot and Sodom? Remember, Lot was willing to offer his virgin daughters to the mob to be gang raped rather than let them have the 'angels' of the lord. The angels being somewhat protected, I don't think there would have been an issue.
We have to stop this gay shit in its tracks and the Republicans and evangelical preachers are the right men for the job. Look at their track record! Which party has raised the consciousness of the public regarding sex between men? It's to their credit they're willing to hang out in Airport bathrooms and have meth delivered to their hotel room. You need to be willing to walk the walk and talk the talk. Praise be, do I hear an Amen in Wasilla.

Wow, WTF?? As in why is this headline and clipped section spun here like this? Did anyone actually read the rest of the story or just took the hysterical headline from here? He banned the song due to a parental complaint and then decided to put it back in after the kids in the jazz choir protested, but is leaving out the part about "killing a man"....
As a gay man, I look out for this kind of stuff too, but this seems more about Wasilla, Alaska and by extension, the much-loathed Sarah Palin and her ilk or that the principal looks vaguely like Elton John, rather than some injustice due to a banning of a song with a gay authorship. Did I miss something obvious here?

I read it which was why I responded as I did. Sick of intolerance and those who give into it, which he originally did. But you're right it does go deeper than just his original action, hence the Footloose reference. And actually he still banned a part of it which is really funny in a way since all they do up there in Wasilla is shoot and kill animals. But I guess that doesn't count as killing to them?

Hey Dave, I been looking for you all weekend. How's it going? Glad to have you back on the threads. It keeps us on our toes. What's up with BC and the Conservative Party? I see their new leader wants to take the country back a decade by decrying that being gay is a choice. It seems they can sure pick them in BC. Have you recovered from the election yet. The health care debate is coming up soon. We will have to see what the Premiers have to say about the federal government wanting to transfer responsibility without the funding to the Provinces and Territories. I hope they fight back.

I have never been a fan of country and western. I used to be a hippie..way back....and always found rednecks scary. These days I respect their views more, but still find the music boring. I remember when country became part of the west coast sound...the Dead and the New Riders took it on as did Dylan with Nashville Skyline, which came as a shock at the time...I saw him play at the Isle of Wight with the Band in 1969 and was disappointed.... I was initially confused, but then it morphed into country rock without abandoning the spliffs. lol The Band were an interesting case of the Deep South meeting the counter culture.

This is a copy of my letter sent to Mr. Probasco
Dear Mr. Probasco,
As the representative of a large group of concerned citizens, it has come to our attention, that there has recently been a great deal of controversy concerning the relative merit of a particular song to be performed at your schools graduation ceremony.
Acknowledging the necessity, to be in keeping with your school's image within the community, I would like to suggest the following song, The Future Belongs to Me! A very powerful and uplifting song, which not only represents the wholesome values of the staff, faculty and community itself, but represents the kind of artistic expression which should be emulated in all public schools across America!
We would very sincerely appreciate you considering the use of the song, as it contains no foul language whatsoever, only a simple, powerful, and positive message! Exactly the kind of message so many of our troubled youth need to hear today!
God bless you, and God bless the United States of America.

From a blog:
“My feathers are ruffled. If Wasillians are going to be consistent, they’ll need to ban the following composers and their work:
Samuel Barber – No more Adagio for Strings, Dwight
Leonard Bernstein – Don’t you dare play anything from West Side Story, my friend
Aaron Copland – Watch out for those hidden messages in Fanfare for the Common Man
Noël Coward – no more Mad Dogs & Englishmen
Charles Tomlinson Griffes – careful, Dwight, a piece for flute or piano might sneak into a solo and ensemble contest
Elton John – empty the sky, Dwight. Right now!
Dave Koz – he was a hit in Anchorage, but don’t play his version ofWhite Christmas at WHS
k.d. lang – put her in Shadowland forever, Dwight
Gian Carlo Menotti – those little operas have been done at thousands of high schools, but keep away from Dwight
Cole Porter – there go about 500 really good songs, Dwight
Stephen Sondheim - Gypsy, West Side Story, A Little Night Music orCompany. Oh – wait! West Side Story’s already banned because of Lenny
Billy Strayhorn – Can’t Take the A Train if you’re a WHS Warrior
Peter Tchaikovsky – What was the secret message in The Nutcracker, Dwight?” - 1 year ago
