"The Blues are a very emotional form of music. The typical characteristics of the Blues are slow melodic rhythms and intense flow of reverb and sustain. Bass plays an important role in the blues as it serves as a foundation for the rest of the band to build upon. It's difficult to just pick up a guitar and start rocking some blues. You have to be in the right mindset to be able to tackle the difficult melodies. In other words, if your used to just playing some power chords you won't transition well into the blues.
The Blues takes a lot of practice to play because of the increased emphasis on the individual notes. It's more about the actual tones you play instead of just exercising your rhythm hand. There's a certain romance required to play the blues.
Standard Blues progressions are usually pretty easy to play once you get the feel for them. Some artists have expanded the blues to a modified Jazz and Rock mix. One example of this is Clapton, as he implements many theories of Rock and Jazz into his blues playing. Many artists use Blues as a foundation to their music primarily because of how it develops a feel for tonal structure and helps artists practice sustain in their playing.
