Born: August 09, 1963 in Newark, NJ
Years Active: 80 's, 90 's, 00's
Genre: R&B

Whitney Houston is inarguably one of the of the biggest female pop stars of all time. Her accomplishments as a hitmaker are extraordinary; just to scratch the surface, she became the first artist ever to have seven consecutive singles hit number one, and her 1993 Dolly Parton cover "I Will Always Love You" became nothing less than the biggest hit single in rock history. Houston was able to handle big adult contemporary ballads, effervescent, stylish dance-pop, and slick urban contemporary soul with equal dexterity; the result was an across-the-board appeal that was matched by scant few artists of her era, and helped her become one of the first black artists to find success on MTV in Michael Jackson's wake. Like many of the original soul singers, Houston was trained in gospel before moving into secular music; over time, she developed a virtuosic singing style given over to swooping, flashy melodic embellishments. The shadow of Houston's prodigious technique still looms large over nearly every pop diva and smooth urban soul singer -- male or female -- in her wake, and spawned a legion of imitators (despite some critics' complaints about over-singing). Always more of a singles artist, Houston largely shied away from albums during the '90s, releasing the bulk of her most popular material on the soundtracks of films in which she appeared. By the end of the decade, she'd gone several years without a true blockbuster, yet her status as an icon was hardly diminished.

We are still awaiting word from the Los Angeles County coroner on what exactly led to Whitney Houston's staggering death Saturday afternoon.

Investigators for the department removed Houston's corpse from the premises of the Beverly Hills Hilton around midnight, just as Clive Davis' annual pre-Grammy gala was wrapping up at the location.

Her body was taken to the county morgue for an autopsy today.

Houston, who had been preparing to attend the bash, was found unconcious in her room. While Davis' party went on, police and coroner's officials swarmed the fourth floor where Houston was staying looking for clues of her death.

There was no immediate word on the cause of her death, which could be delayed up to six weeks pending toxicology tests. However, Beverly Hills police issued a statement saying, "There were no obvious signs of criminal intent."

Houston was discovered around 3:30 p.m. by a member of entourage, believed to be her assistant. The woman's panicked screams could be heard in adjacent rooms. According to TMZ, Houston was found with her face underwater in her bathtub. A source told E! News Houston has had prescriptions for antidepression and antianxiety medications for years.

Members of Houston's entourage and paramedics—already on scene for Davis' party—attempted to revive the star to no avail. She was pronounced dead at 3:55.

WATCH: Whitney's Final Interview and Performance

Davis, the longtime producer and mentor of Houston, announced before the party that he was "personally devastated by the loss of somebody who meant so much to me. Whitney was so full of life. She was so looking forward to tonight...she loved music. She loved this night. Let's celebrate music."

Calling Houston "a beautiful person," Davis also said the six-time Grammy winner "had a talent beyond compare."

"She graced this stage with her regal presence so many times," he went on. "Simply put, Whitney would have wanted the music to go on and her family asked us to carry on."

While there have been no immediate words of funeral plans, Houston's childhood church, the New Hope Baptist Church in her native Newark, N.J., held a special prayer service Sunday morning in memory of Houston and offering support to her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, and mother, Cissy.
