The Wolf That Lives In Lindsey
Legendary jazz bassist Charles Mingus requested Joni to complete his final compositions on his deathbed. It was an incredible honor and a turning point in her career.
This is from the album 'Mingus' and has long been among my very favorites."If you're smart or rich or lucky
maybe you'll beat the laws of man
but the inner laws of spirit
and the outer laws of nature
no man can, no, no man can." - 11 months ago

Yep. I'm familiar with this work. Superb and mystifying.
I always pitied the musicians who worked with her, no matter their proficiency. She could go anywhere she wanted to go musically at any point in time. I could understand jazz groups that started within a general pattern, or at least a general "understanding", but she can be totally free form. She doesn't perform the music; she is the music.
Astonishing. - 11 months ago

It was that 'totally free form' that finally taught me how to sing harmony to almost anything.
Mingus was totally 'turned on' by the fact that she played an out-of-tune piano with an orchestra on 'Paprika Plains.' She later said that while playing it she discovered 'all notes resolve back to middle C.'
As lead singer in my 80's band 'Dog's Breakfast' and frustrated that I couldn't sing harmony, I decided one night to go out-of-tune and not be concerned about how it sounded. I was singing her song 'Sweet Bird' and suddenly it clicked.
Ever since I've been a harmonizing fool.
There is nothing better than the feeling of becoming the music. - 11 months ago

I don't know what "... resolve.. middle C" means, actually. It's a piano so, yeah, I get that part. But the rest? Maybe she meant that with more complex chord structures the tuning gave (to her ear) more interesting color but was not discordant. (?)
"Dog's Breakfast"?: "a confused mess or mixture". Ha! Weren't we all? Great name!
Harmony came naturally to me; maybe because I had a reel-to-reel recorder as a kid and played around a lot with overdubbing and adding harmony. More likely, it was because when driving and listening to the radio I always sang along.... hardly ever the lead; always a harmony; whatever wasn't already there. Hell, I sing harmony to "Happy Birthday" at parties. And yes, my kids thought I was wierd. But eventually they got it. Now they can walk into a grocery store and recognize Jackson Browne or Toad The Wet Sprocket on the overhead Musak. - 11 months ago
