Fundamentalism at play: a fascinating collection of secret portraits of Taliban fighters (such photography was illegal under Taliban rule). Look at their eyes, how they hold themselves, how the young men affectionately hold hands. The old-fashioned color treatment makes them look like a cross between gay iconography and c. 1920s World's Fair optimism. Even odder: the pastoral backdrops (Swiss houses!?) and fake flowers.I would love to know what these soldiers did with their photos; who did they share them with? And what would it be like to be a gay Taliban soldier?(Credit to Fitzgeraldo for finding this video in the first place.)
