The Road Out of Debt Is Longer For Ladies

Image

Women take longer to pay off their student loans... and it's not a result of shoe shopping. This is really frustrating for me, actually. Why is it that still, in 2008, women are still not paid equally for the same job. They have to pay the same amount to get the same education as the men in their schools. And you know if women didn't have to pay as much, men would be up in arms about it. So why the double standard?

    • Men get time off to care for children and are taking that time as well. In California I get Paternity leave that is state funded to care for my wife and daughter.

I think there is real statistical data to support that women are paid less than men for the same work. It's unfair and it should stop... but just as important, costs in the US have risen at an alarming rate when compared to the rise in income. People in general are making a LOT less money, and the economy is supported by Loans. A lot of people are on their third mortgage right now just to keep paying their living expenses. The economy can't withstand that much longer.

    • Funsizedgirl, did you read this part of the article: "Kat Stark, women's officer at the National Union of Students, said: "Women are taking longer than men to pay off their student loans because they are paid less, not because they are taking time off to have children. Within three years of graduating, over 40% of men are earning over £25,000, compared to just over a quarter of women."?

Within three years of graduating, very few women have taken time off to have babies. Also, most estimates of what women and men make in comparison to one another take into account years of experience.

Women are commonly taking less or no time away from their jobs and there is still a huge disparity between the genders in the workplace. I work in economic consulting and when I go into a meeting with the heads of major banks, I'm commonly the only woman in the room. Sure that's anecdotal and could reflect the remnants of our mothers' generations where childbearing was more dominant in women's lives since the majority of the men in these meetings are also older, but just look at statistics on the number of women in power at major corporations, in government, etc. To me, the reality is that societal evolution is slow, and that although the world may seem equal in opportunity to many people, sexism and racism still exist to varying extents, particularly in arenas that were historically white male dominated. But, I do think an interesting test will come as the baby boomers retire and the need for large numbers of new leaders begins to emerge...

    • maybe it's not that women get paid less for the same work. maybe it's that women get paid less because alot of the time they have less work experience because they take time out of thier career to have babies?

seriously i know plenty of women who never had kids and make MORE than thier male colleagues.
why should employers pay equally when the experience brought to the job isn't.
As far as i'm concerned we already do have equal pay for equal work. What this article is really saying is that some woman want to be paid corporate wages equal to that of those who didn't take time off, while staying home with babies

If anyone is wondering FTR i'm a woman.

    • Debt for Diploma is a VC2 pod about facing student loan debt. It makes me wonder how our kids are going to be able to go to college if we are getting in to more and more debt ourselves while cost of tuition continues to rise. That's a scary scenario.
