AP admits to having already written Spears' obit

While it's standard journalism practice to prepare an obituary for a public figure who is elderly or ailing, come on, what? Someone's taking the "guess her death; win a PS3" deathpool just a little too seriously.

    • It is pretty sad when we have nothing better to do than bet on when someone will die. Brit has some serious issues and is for sure a good canidate to promote the impact of mental illness on our society today. Could it be possible that many of her problems relate to the world she grew up in? We as a society are obsessed with celeb's, glamour, and most of all money. It is sad, really sad how we turn someone elses suffering into money making enjoyment for the public.

    • The disturbing thing is this overall sick desire of our society - not everyone but a good percentage - who with a guilty pleasure likes to watch people like celebs such as Spears pathetically self-destruct and do nothing but continue to watch avidly while munching on mental popcorn.

    • I wasn't comparing in the sense of amazing-ness and worth, but just at the level of fame they had and them being portrayed as unstable. No way are they alike for any talent or anything.

    • Well, consider that almost a year ago, the Associated Press experimented with not reporting even one little news item on Paris Hilton. The experiment lasted one week.

It was groundbreaking! A major news outlet was willfully acknowledging that Paris Hilton is not, and should not, be news!

"It was only meant to be a weeklong ban -- not the boldest of journalistic initiatives, and one, we realized, that might seem hypocritical once it ended. And it wasn't based on a view of what the public should be focusing on -- the war in Iraq, for example, or the upcoming election of the next leader of the free world, as opposed to the doings of a partygoing celebrity heiress/reality TV star most famous for a grainy sex video.

"No, editors just wanted to see what would happen if we didn't cover this media phenomenon, this creature of the Internet gossip age, for a full week. After that, we'd take it day by day. Would anyone care? Would anyone notice? And would that tell us something interesting?"

How far you've come, Associated Press! How far you've come.

    • This is sad. To prey on someone who obviously has a problem and cant get out of the spotlight long enough to get better... These people are sick.. Trying to get rich of of someone elses vulnerabily.

    • It's disgusting. Only bottom feeders like the reporters who feed on Britney Spears could imagine such a thing.

The AP is beginning to make the Iraq war look good. Say, don't they need some more of those types in Bagdad? Maybe outside the green zone? Is Fallujah still hot?

Whatever happened to treat others as you want to be treated?

Britney Spears could be your sister or daughter. She is definitely ungrounded and her parents don't appear to have a clue how to b parents. It is not Britney's fault she was not raised in a healthier family. It is a shame all those smart cats in Los Angeles making all those millions off of her haven't a clue either.

That goes for all the celebrity females (I guess I'd have to include males too) in and out of trouble. Where are the seasoned professionals who can mentor Britney and these others through the rough times? Or was she just an innocent to take advantage of, to prey on, to manipulate, to use and through away?

    • you know, why do people still care about her misadventures? it's cruel to want to set a timeline for anyones deaths, be they sooth sayers or paparazzi.

    • Hmmmm...
The article is certainly right about the impact her potential death would have on the world, and I agree, leave celebrities alone, with less pointless publicity for artists like this could cause a revolution in mainstream music as we know it. the most obvious thing is that this is a horrible ultamatum on any human life. I doubt that the news that they already began her lament is very hard for britney herself to deal with, considering her entire life. Objectifying herself since childhood, she has continuosly had her life scheduled for her, and told how to look, (exist) and with both the paparazzi's and publics close eyes and the internet, she has got to have been one of the worlds most embarassed individuals for a good long while now. Wouldn't it be crazy if britney's life as a publicly broadcasted Icon was a propaganda technique used by the government (working with MTV of course) to get the younger generations to straighten up. Don't drink and do drugs Dont have sex . Wait a minute, whose values are those again? The Pinnacle of Pop. The majority of the public have a good time laughing about her and either don't consider her suffering or aren't compassionate about the kind that it is, what other kinds of products are expected out of the cruel environment of growing up on TV. Im 20 years old and Im pretty sure when I say most people I know in my age group would do a lot of drinking and drugs if we all had britney spears paycheck. Besides getting fu*ked up and buying pointless material things what should famous celebrities and other wealthy people should do with their money instead? What would you do with it?

    • standard practice. i guess they look at lifestyle and prominence as well as age when deciding to write an obit. one organization famously prematurely post Joe DiMaggio obit.

    • Druggies like this are like Keith Richards, they just don't give a $h!t and it gives them a metaphysical power to live almost indefinitely. I think they're waaaay too premature writing her obit.
