LOS ANGELES -- Four people were killed Sunday when a car skidded sideways on the Santa Monica (10) Freeway and crashed into a cement pillar in the Mid-City district.

A 2007 Lexus ES350 sedan was traveling westbound around 8:15 a.m. when it left the freeway and crashed into a support pillar of the Arlington Avenue overpass and burst into flames, CHP Sgt. Doug Young said.

Witnesses tried to rescue the victims after the crash but the fire was just too intense, Young said.

The bodies were so badly burned that authorities could not immediately say how many victims there were, but the coroner's office eventually said two men and two women died in the crash.

The driver was a 30-year-old woman and the three passengers were all 30 years old, according to the CHP.

Some lanes were closed on the busy freeway, which has six lanes in each direction, while the accident was cleared.

Authorities had not identified the victims, but according to broadcast reports, the car was registered to a Los Angeles County resident.

When asked if the victims were possibly burned alive, Young said he could not make that determination.

It's believed speed may have played a part in the crash.

What has the new cell phone laws have to do with anything. At this point there was mention about use of a cell phone playing a part in the accident.

On saying that it does not seem like the cell phone law is being very effective. I still see just as many people talking on the phone. They need to up the fine to $200 for people to stand up and take notice.
