It appears offensive on first blush but the more you look at it the more the satirical value kicks in and even more appealing what may have escaped some - look at where they are standing. Congratulations PRESIDENT Obama.

It's the New Yorker. Isn't the New Yorker a rather rich-type magazine? It has some liberal views apparently, but still, it seems to focus on the upper class New York culture.

Has anyone ever seen the cover of Rolling Stone? They had a picture of John Mccain in a bamboo jail with Obama and Hillary cutting him with bayonets inside the paper a few magazines ago.

I wonder if the meaning of this is to slam Obama, or to make fun of the people who actually believe that what this cartoonish cover is displaying?
At any rate, let us hope that most people who go to the poles are not naive fools who believe everything they hear.

i don't care about his name, i care about who is right for the job. No matter what we are in a time of unrest in the world. Bush may have done a lot wrong but if he would've done nothing after 9/11 then the American people would've been upset about that too. I don't like Obama but the real reason i am going for Mccain is because we are in a time of unrest among nations. we need a man in there that will know what in the world to do. Bush wasn't the best man for the job when it came to 9/11 but he did what he could to protect us and to track down the people responsible. I don't believe that a lot of Obama's ideas are realistic. So bottom line is like i said people might want him to be the next President but no one really knows WHO he is and that is scary. He could be a really good liar for all we know. I would rather Clinton than him. At least we know her.

The number one reason I'm going for Obama isn't so much the man himself. The reason is that I feel that the GOP has had just a little too much fun in the White House already. Those who have power use that power. Those who have power for too long can be corrupted by it. The GOP is corrupt. This is not to say that Dems are not, but they have not had as much power.

Wow fotojunkie, i cannot believe you just said that. Fear of the unknown? Thats the same kinda shit that made America the MOST racist country on the planet. We have to get over these old ways, and have some faith. Fuck these utalitarian assholes trying to make a profit from our votes. We need an idealist, someone who stirs the masses from their decrepit slumber. This is our fucking country, we are the true leaders of this nation, not the President. All Bush has accomplished during his term, is take power away from us, and give it to him (the president). This is not how things should be. And please do not use 9/11 when choosing who you are going to vote for. Thats the shit that got us in trouble in the first place. People thinking that we need to be protected from the crazy middle east. Thats what made it so easy for Bush to do whatever the fuck he wanted without anyone saying anything. Well im tired of it all.
The original Patriots that built this nation, were thinkers, idealists all of them. They saw the evil of tyrranny and sought to destroy it. They questioned laws and policies, they fucking REBELLED! They, and their methods are the reason why we are the United States of America. But now people have lost sight of what a real patriot is, now it is UNpatriotic to question the government, UNpatriotic to talk shit about an incompetent leader (Bush). FUCK THAT!
We know very well what Mccain is like, thats for damn sure. He was a pow for years, fought in wars like a good soldier, followed orders like a good american. I am tired of these old rich whitefolks telling me what to do. Thinking that they know what is right for me and those like me. Shit has gone down hill for a while, and Mccain is not the one to save us. He is just like all the others before him. Same demon, different disguise. What we need is something different, and even though Senator Obama was NOT my first choice when the race first started, hell he wasnt even my 2nd. Things have turned the way they have, and we are forced to choose between 2 polar opposites. I repeat, we know what Mccain is like, what he will do. And i do not like that pole, we've been there for years, i'd rather try something different, because even if we fail, we'll know we tried something other than suicide.
So choose wisely, and don't be swayed by what's on the cover of a magazine, or on telivision.
And even though i do not believe in the Judeo-Christian's picture of God. The only words that come to mind when i think of the years to come are these... May God help us all... - 3 years ago

No judgment on your political choice, but it seems to me that you could find out almost everything there is to know about Obama with a simply Google query. The "fear" of Obama that you speak of is completely manufactured. Its not about left or right, its about spinning facts, pollsters, and image makers/breakers.

hey there,
Mr. Bush DID nothing to help this country after 911- we are at war with a country that had nothing to do with it, we have a BAD reputation in the world because of how we have conducted ourselves during it (torture) and are currently at risk for an international tribunal for committing war crimes, we are clearly less safe in our own country - spending far too much money and lives on an illegal war while ignoring REAL safety issues here- like improving infrastructure and our ports and transportation systems. he has run our economy into the ground ,he has increased our dependence on foreign oil while saying we are addicted to oil, destroyed our civil rights, and McCain will do the same. Mc C was against lowering taxes during war, now he is for it. he was for the GI bill, then he was against it- now he is saying he helped pass it and wasn't even present for the vote. he doesn't know the difference between the Sunni and Shiites- he said he would leave Iraq if they asked- they did and now he is against it. he makes jokes about bombing Iran-- THIS IS WHO YOU TRUST???
Give me an idealist any day...i agree - it was the mindset of our founding fathers i wish to emulate-- we MUST at least ask for change or we will deserve what we are getting. - 3 years ago

Hmmm. Does manufacturing "evidence" against a nation that did Not attack us keep us safer? Bush and Cheney had their own reasons for attacking Iraq but it wasn't 9/11. Iraq did not cause 9/11.
Bush and Cheney have so much to answer for.....the deaths of thousands of innocents. A trillion dollar deficit that he has squandered making all of their cronies richer. They have destroyed what good will others had of our nation and have brought us to the brink of national bankruptcy.

It is good that FotoJunkie posted her opinion, because it is common among most Americans due to media and white house distortion.
Bush did simply did not track down those responsible for 9/11, Osama Bin Laden is still running around the somewhere in the middle east, and Afghanistan is a complete wreck as a country and a prefect breeding ground for future terrorists. Bush explicitly did not do what he could to protect our country, he did the exact opposite by illegally invading a country that neither had weapons of mass destruction or ANY links to Al-Queda. All he did was fuel the Anti-American fire in the middle east.
If you don't know who Barrack Obama is, it is up to you to find out, and it is not hard. Simply google his name and you can read his entire life story. He did not materialize on this planet just to win an election, his life story is public knowledge. It is on you as an American citizen to actively engage in your democracy and educate yourself about the candidates and our countries actual foreign policy during the last 8 years, because mass media will not do it for you.

this really upsets me. at my job there was a email going around about why obama shouldn't be our president, and one of the reasons was because of his name and another reason was because he wanted to get rid of the patriot act, and alot of Americans don't know what the patriot act is, they think he is unpatriotic, but it is a good idea to get rid of that law.

Obviously this girl did not take an English class, there is such a thing called satire, look it up. Clearly this may be funny to some or offensive. I personally think it is offensive because of the extent to what they took it. Even McCain's old ass was taken aback by it. The media has tried so hard it paint a bad picture of Obama and this is the result. Maybe next time on the cover they should show how many wrinkles the Republican candidate has.

If the goal of cover art is to sell more magazines, then based on the comments here and on Huffington, I'm guessing that this one will be judged as wildly successful.
I guess I don't understand the surprise or the outrage that goes along with this. Here is a list of sister magazines/websites published by CondéNet, which publishes The New Yorker:
Concierge
Epicurious
Men.Style.com
Style.com
Wired.com
Lipstick.com
NutritionData
YM
Allure
Architectural Digest
Bon Appétit
Brides
Condé Nast
Portfolio
Cookie
Domino
Glamour
Golf Digest
Golf for Women
Golf World
Gourmet
Lucky
Men's Vogue
Self
Teen Vogue
Vanity Fair
WDoes the publisher of this selection of magazines have some sort of broad political influence? Moral authority? Can they vote for you? Will this magazine cover, amidst all the other influences in the media and among peers, with nearly 4 months to go until ElectionDay, really change even one vote?
I think not.
But it sure did make them some money this week ... and -- surprise! -- that's all this company is trying to do. Just trying to put it all in perspective.

Exactly, this kind of crap ignores the real issues that we need to deal with. Everyone's focused on his middle name, lack of lapel pin, what his wife or pastor said, but not his foreign policy, monetary policy, tax policy, etc.
How are he and McCain that different?
Omaba has the same wife. McCain left his after she was in an accident.
McCain wears a lapel pin flag. Obama doesn't.
McCain places his hand over his heart during the Pledge; Obama doesn't.
Obama's wife and pastor say embarrassing things. McCain does all the time.
So... we have a patriotic jerk with no friends or an unpatriotic good husband with bad choices in friends and family?
In the mean time the media ignored Ron Paul.
Even Bob Barr who is far from a perfect Libertarian Candidate is a far more qualified presidential candidate in experience than McCain or Obama put together.
So, let's go back to mocking Obama's name, race, possible religion, or McCain's flip-flops, temper tantrums (although being near a button might be a real issue), and his nick names for his wife.
Go back to sleep America.
