"High-Fructose Corn Syrup is No Different than Sugar," says Lobbyist Group

WTF?!?! I just watched this commercial on TV that said high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) is no different than regular sugar. Wrong! Disbelief and incredulity to follow.

Did your jaw drop or what?

Upon a visitation of their site (www.sweetsurprise.com) I got even madder.

"All the major caloric (nutritive) sweeteners including sugar, honey and high fructose corn syrup require processing to make the final sweetener. All are considered natural food ingredients under the U.S. Food and Drug Administration’s definition of the term “natural.” Under FDA rules, “natural” means that “nothing artificial or synthetic (including all color additives regardless of source) has been included in, or has been added to, a food that would not normally be expected to be in the food"

Honey is just as natural as HFCS? Pleeease. Not only is honey made by bees, the "processing" they're talking about is usually heat-treatment or mixing honeys. HFCS is any of a group of corn syrups which have undergone enzymatic processing in order to increase their fructose content and are then mixed with pure corn syrup (100% glucose) to reach their final form. I guess my defintition of natural involves things that don't have to go through a lab to be made.

From the site:"High fructose corn syrup has gained a prominent position in the U.S. food industry for many reasons: it is stable in acid systems (sucrose is not), providing sweetness and flavor stability lacking in sugar in similar circumstances; it inhibits microbial spoilage by reducing water activity and extends shelf life through superior moisture control; it helps canned foods taste fresher; and it is easy to transport and incorporate into recipes. While price may have been a factor in food manufacturers' choice in sweeteners more than 20 years ago, U.S. food manufacturers' continued use of high fructose corn syrup is based on the benefits it provides rather than its price relative to sugar. (7)"

And of course they're not going to tell you the bad things about HFCS! Michael Roizen and Mehmet Oz write in their book, "You: On A Diet":
"A major gang leader against you body is fructose, found in HFCS, a sweetener in many processed foods. Here's how it works: when you eat calories from healthy sources, they turn off your desire to eat by inhibiting production of NPY (neuropeptide Y, increases appetite) or by producing more CART (cocaine-amphetamine regulatory transport, reduce appetite). But HFCS, which sweetens our soft drinks and salad dressings, isn't seen by your brain as a regular food. Because your brain can't see the fructose... your body wants you to keep eating (which means that even low-fat foods can have extremely bad consequences, calorie and appetite-wise). Americans have gone from eating no punds of this food in 1960 to eating more than 63 pounds of it every year (that's 128,000 calories that your brain doesn't recognize). So you constantly get the signal that you're hungry, even after you've jammed your gut with two baskets of calorie-laden, fructose-loaded biscuits."

This whole thing is just like saying GMO foods are absolutely no different than organic foods; in fact, organic foods are actually GMO foods.

LIES!!! ABHORRENT LIES!

    • You're very right, there are some neutral (or at least positive aspects) of HFCS. I'm just so mad that they mention nothing at all about the whole turning off your full sense receptor. People wonder why America is obese and the people causing it are telling you their product isn't harmful.

    • OK Question, is HFCS the root of all evil? (laughs) No.

      Think about it...
Sugar Cane ---processed into---> sugar & splenda
Corn ------ processed into---> high fructose corn syrup
Honey Combs ---processed by bees then extracted by humans and machines ---> honey

Isn't this all the same song and dance?
I grew up where you could go into the country side and pick sugarcane and chew on it. Yeah it was yummy. But non-processed, quite different from a spoon of sugar.

Anyway from a diabetic point of view, I can offer a couple ideas about how the body uses fructose:
      1. Fructose does not increase blood sugar after normal levels of consumption. For a diabetic person that's HUGE!

      How does that work?
I think it is because fructose is not transported directly into the bloodstream after digestion and absorption, but is converted into glycogen in the liver where it is stored and used for energy at a later time.

I hope this helps. Being diabetic sucks, but hey, I do know more about sugar than I thought I did.
