Racist Obama Billboard Causes Outrage

Image
Apocalipstick
Highway billboard attacking Obama inspires heated newspaper letters: a billboard in West Plains showing a caricature of Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama wearing a turban and using his middle name - Hussein - in quotes has sparked outrage and accusations of racism.

    • There's nothing racist about this. A bit over the top but not racist. And while the implied reference to Obama as a terrorist (which I agree with, he is the most dangerous domestic terrorist we've yet encountered) may offend some of the non-thinking masses who voted for this train wreck, which portions of the statement are inaccurate? None. He will give us more of all these things. Whether you like it or not is immaterial; the statement is true.

And for the uninformed who think more gun regulation is a good thing, what's needed is better enforcement of existing gun laws, not more controls that won't be enforced. If these kinds of controls had been in place back in 1776 there wouldn't be an America. The un-American liberals will think that's a good idea but the vast majority of us are very glad to be living here. You'll have gun crime whether or not there are controls. Controls only affect legal gun owners.

We need more people like this willing to voice their displeasure with an administration that is bent on destroying our way of life, not more control over free-speech which clearly protects this display.

@Lensman. I don't know what's more hilarious. Your asinine assertion that Obama is a terrorist or the fact that you're commenting on a post that's over a year old. Way to get in the game there sport, got any thoughts on something that happened this year.

By the way. This country will be much better off with more same sex marriage and more gun control. And if the wealthiest Americans have to see the tax cuts that Bush gave them rolled back in order for 30+ million more Americans to get basic health coverage...well then so be it. How did those tax cuts work out for us in the end?

And while nobody (including Obama) is for more abortions, a woman's right to choose what happens within her own body is something that is absolutely worth protecting. I for one am very happy the country choose to elect a President who is committed to that. I love the bald hypocrisy of conservatives who can't abide the thought of the government restricting in any way what or how they shoot, but don't seem to have any issue at all with the government coming between a woman and her doctor. It only goes to prove how hollow their rhetoric really is.

    • Blatantly racist, but MOST of all, STUPID! Everything it says it LIES..Barack Obama does not support ABORTION..he supports a human being's right to choose what is right for her own body (even the trailer trash who get knocked up while addicted to crystal meth, and are probably related to the people who put up this sign.). Obama doesn't support same-sex marriage...he supports equal rights for ALL Americans (even dumbass rednecks who didn't pass 8th grade, like the ones who probably put up this sign.) And Obama doesn't support more gun regulations--in fact he has voted in favor of the 2nd amendment (which protects all legitimate gun-owners, even the idiots who are usually drunk when they go coon-huntin, like the ones who put up this sign.) And Obama doesn't support higher taxes--in fact, his tax plan favors the middle class and the downtrodden (even the lazy-ass mofos who don't get up a get a job, like the ones who put up this sign). So before any more of you redneck assholes spread idiotic lies about Barack Obama, you better stop and think, because this a guy who will stand up for everyone, who will be a leader of everyone, and who will work to represent the interests of everyone--even those who probably don't deserve it (like the people who put up this sign.)

    • Why is this any different than Hollywood making films that degrade and misrepresent our Commander in Cheif? This is what Free Speech is all about. If Hollywood does it, why can't anyone else?

Isn't this what the campaign ads are doing right now? Don't the candidates slander one another?

In history, one man, Alexander Hamilton, slandered the VP candidate, Aaron Burr and it got him killed in a dual. Today, slander is nothing to anyone. Everyone does it and no one cares. That is, unless it about some Democrat running for an office. They can slander and mis-lead and mis-represent, but goodness forbid a Republican or any other party do the same.

Wake up America!!! Change is needed!!! However, Obama is NOT the answer. Pay attention and read up on ALL the candidates!!! I wish we actually had a choice this election, but we don't. However, I will voice my opinion and vote. It is not just a priviledge to vote, it is our duty to vote. Rather than worrying about a sign or an ad on TV or Radio, make your voice heard and VOTE. That's the only way things will change!!

BTW... I currently live in Illinois and have to endure Obama for the past 4 years here, but I am originally from West Plains.

giles6pack2 are you referring to the movie "W." that hasn't made it to the big screen yet? If so then how do you know it is not factual, did you hear that listening to Rush Limbaugh or some other talking head and just decide to regurgitate it without knowing anything at all for yourself? I haven't seen it but I am looking forward to it when I visit home this weekend, that is if West Plains is showing it. If you do not believe our current president has made ghastly mistakes and misjudgments you are now a minority congratulations how does it feel? The sign in WP is as repulsive as the people who support it, period.

    • I just want to say this isn't racist on his color in any way I live in west plains and i'm not a redneck nor a hick in fact i'm far from it. I think the only people who disagree with this sign are the ones who support killing unborn children(how can a mother chose whats best for the baby isn't it the babies choice), who doesn't want a woman to protect her self using a gun, and thinks god will support gay marriages.

    • Irislovesdustin:

Irislovesdustin I am glad you are not a racist but the sign is divisive and ugly. It tries to portray Barack Obama as a Muslim all be it in the wrong kind of head wrap but taken into consideration the intellect of the person who put it up that is no surprise. The fact is Barack Obama is not a Muslim he is a Christian. The sign being brought to the nations attention comes on the heels of a very ugly turn in the republican party that a lot of people are worried about including prominent conservatives who have spoken out against the McCain/Palin ticket. I am sad that you felt the need to go off topic about the sign and just spew republican talking points about abortion, gay rights, guns, and god. In the end I know this will have no effect of you once so ever but I feel like maybe you should know about a liberal's point of view, mine anyway. I am not pro baby killing, I am pro choice. Before legal abortions women still found a way to end unwanted pregnancies and it could be very dangerous. It is a woman's personal decision. I own guns. I love to shoot and I am pretty good at it. I would absolutely have no problem protecting myself or my family with a gun. Liberals do not want to take guns away they want smart gun regulations. Guns kept out of the hands of criminals, a ban on assault weapons. It is common sense that owning a gun is one thing and wanting a shoulder harnessed rocket launcher is another. As far as gay marriage is concerned I am not advocating that God support it just that the government recognize gay partners rights on a civil level, much like Sarah Palin I might add.

    • I was a West Plains resident for 21 years until just recently and I am embarrassed by the sign that has gotten the town this negative attention. West plains could use some diversity like many small towns throughout our nation but it is a nice place to live. I am an Obama supporter 110% but I realize that most people in West Plains are not. It is one thing to not agree with someones policies and it is another to put up a racist caricature of them and then lie about not knowing how it got there. That is the funny part of this disgraceful story. The MAN who put it up does not even have the courage to stand behind his convictions. I wonder why? Maybe because he knows he is a ridiculous fool who has brought shame and embarrassment to his community.

I would like to point out that the man who made the sign was obviously trying to portray Barack as being a Muslim, although he had no idea what a Muslim is. That was why he placed a headwrap on Obama and put his middle name in quotations. It wasn't to be racist. I am not saying that racism isn't alive and thriving here, though, because that would be a lie. It's a small town with small town ways. People are slow to change and don't embrace the differences in life.

    • This is such bull shit, first off it is so racist, and second it is bull, Abortions go down under democratic presidents, Obama is not pro abortion he is pro choice there is a big difference, as for taxes, Obama gives a family making 66 thousad a year an addition 1,200 in tax relief, mccain gives them 339 bucks, and for him and Cindy they would get a tax cut of 500 thousand dollars, and then there is gun control, Obama is a constitutional lawyer, he loves our consitution, and fully supports the 2nd amendment. This is the same crap the right pulls every four years, they try to paint the dem as all of the above, and this year they have the added ammo of him being half black and having a different name. I hope the American people don't fall for this game again, we finaly have a guy who will take care of the middle class, create jobs and free us of our dependance on forign oil and we can't afford John Mccain and his Regan trickle down ecconomics, I'm still waiting for that shit to trickle down from the 80's. The Mccain Palin ticket is trying to start a class-race war because they can't win on the issues, they are playing to the worst eliment left in this country, the things that divide us, Obama is trying to bring us all together. Oh and as for the evil Gay marriage thing, big deal, let the gays fell the sting of divorce, shouldn't we all have equal rights? I think if two people love each other and want to try to spend their lives together, let them.

    • I wish ignorant rednecks had the ability to read. If they did, they'd know that during Bill Clinton's first year in office there were 1,330,614 abortions reported. During his final year in office there were 861,343 -- A drop of nearly 500,000 abortions/year. Despite a republican whitehouse and republican led congress, the number of abortions has not dropped appreciably sincce George Bush came to power. Barack Obama is NOT pro-Abortion, he is pro-Choice, as are most Americans. Surveys of U.S. Citizens consistenty show that about 52 percent of Americans identify themselves as Pro-Choice, about 41 percent Pro-Life. 60 percent of Americans believe that Justices supported to the supreme court should be the sort who would uphold Roe-v-Wade. As for the Arab name, crap ... Barak and Obama are African names, not Arabic ... Obama has never been a muslim. Both of his birth parents were atheist and his Indonesian step father had little use for religion. Clearly the case, or else he wouldn't have married a woman who was a devout non-believer.

Their are COPTIC CHRISTIANS in Lebanon with Hussein in their name. Want to kill them too?

Hundreds of them were born in and live in the United States.
If going to say someone named Hussein is a terrorist then you best run in the opposite direction fast as you can the next time you meet someone with the name "Charles" or anyone with the last name "Manson" or someone named "Timothy" because they'll blow your house up.
Far as assassins of U.S. of America Presidents well their names constantly change but they all have 1 binding common factor: they've always been so called "white".

Hmm....let's see....I'm white so I can't say the sacred "N" word, can't get a minority or black only scholarship ( although all others are open to all people), there is a BET network, a Miss. Black America,...etc. But you put one person's middle name with the rest of his name and that is racist. What's next, African-Americans are not negroe's? Why aren't they just Americans?

    • If there was a regular picture of Obama, not emphasizing his middle name like in the billboard and simply listing the platform allegations (especially if they're accurate), then I wouldn't have much to say.

But this?! This is very, VERY, bad taste. This is similar to the anti-Japanese World War II propaganda posters decades ago.

No Republican (supporting McCain and Palin) would like it if I put up a billboard with a bulldog, lips painted with lipstick with a quote saying, "You wouldn't want this 'b***h' running for VP, do you?" Of course they wouldn't like that! It's bad taste! So tell me how some people feel this is acceptable?

Women have the right to choice, thus they should have the right to choose an abortion if they wish.

Same sex marriages- that's their business and hey, if the other person makes them happy then they should have the right to be happy with that person and at least have a civil union. Besides, it could cut down on the divorce rate.

Obama is not proposing to increase taxes. I explained this in a previous post.

Gun regulations- shoot! I'm a S.W. Missourian and if I had my way, guns would be banned, but there are some responsible hunters who take only what they need- my grandfather was one. So, yes, there should be gun regulations. It is a valid issues, IMHO

All candidates try to convey the message that they are "one of you" and share your values and concerns.
To me it's fair game to question a candidate's background.

The bottom half of the billboard poses some legitimate concerns that voters are asked to THINK about.

McShame will drive this country into the ground. If Obama's ideas work, it could be what will help this country, BUT he doesn't do it alone. There is congress you know. We've lived far too long under a dictator, who won't work with congress unless it is his way. We are sick of his "my way or the highway" policy. It's time for someone new who doesn't have his ideas.

Also, he is proposing less taxes, not more. IF he were Muslim, all Christians and other non-Muslims would be charged extra taxes. Not so with Obama. These guys are so full of it, they don't even know what they are talking about. Besides, Obama is Christian, if he were Muslim, his wife would be in a black gunny sack with her face covered or at least her head. It seems very sad to me that anyone can be attacked because of their middle name, something they have absolutely NO CONTROL over!! Just as he has been attacked in other places because of his skin color!

I know a number of people who NEVER use their middle name because they don't like the name. White, American, Christians...who were given a name they don't care to use!

    • I am sick and tired of the racial card. Everytime there is something wrong said about Obama, it's because he's not white. I'm sorry but this is NOT racist. The billboard is not about him being black. It's catering to the misconception he's Muslim and the connotations that come with that. That the billboard is using turbans incorrectly. His middle name is Hussein but I am not quite sure why it's in quotations. I can only assume it is for effect, in which case begs the question of what effect they want it to have.

The other stuff on the billboard is kind of correct. And that is what you should be arguing, not that it's racist.
      1. Obama IS pro-choice. Some argue that giving women the option for an abortion, means they will have it. Simply put, They spinning it to their advantage but it is semi-true depending on what you think.
      2. More Sex Marriages is simply untrue. Obama supports civil unions and gay equality and believes that should be determined by states. Also that marriage is not a right, bu nondiscrimination is.
      3. More Taxes depends on who you are. If youre making over 250K, then you should worry. Its more complicated then that really so do some research and see where you fit.
      4. Gun regulations [from ontheissues.com]
" * Ok for states & cities to determine local gun laws. Obama endorsed Illinois handgun ban.
      * Respect 2nd Amendment, but local gun bans ok. "

Free speech allows other points of view to be voiced and also allows those who listen to discern credibility and validity.

I hope more billboards like these are posted! Hopefully, the more people that see them will realize how many ignorant and poorly informed folks are out there. The person who put that sign up thought it was brilliant which goes to show the caliber of people that are out there.

    • To the response that stated "disgusting, yes. stupid, yes. free speech? yes." I'd appreciate your acknowledgment that the board was stupid and disgusting. However, to categorize this as 'free speech' is perhaps debatable.

There is a line between free speech and hate speech. If you think one can go out and say anything you want in America in the name of free speech, you're perhaps a little naive regarding the laws of America. There are libel, slander, as well as hate speech legislations.

I can't argue with the words. However, the picture with the turban is highly inappropriate and it is certainly debatable if it should be classified as slander / hate speech.

    • I think it's almost impossible to determine the motive of the person who posted this billboard without having talked to them at length about it.

Obviously the billboard has made people angry. This cannot be discounted since emotions are not a rational thing. What it seems people are trying to do is explain what elements in their mind are contributing to this feeling of anger.

At face value the billboard appears to be "the facts". The issue I have with the billboard is the emphasis on Islamic symbolism. It seems to me the billboard heavily insinuates to onlookers that Obama is a Muslim. My guess is that this upsets many people because they feel this billboard is using insinuated lies to play on the fears of Americans who fear terrorist attacks from Islamic terrorists.

An image is more than the colors, shapes, words, and content. An image can be encoded by the designer or artist with meaning that isn't surface level, but is meant to evoke certain associations or emotions. I'm a designer and very familiar with doing this.

When I try to decode this image I notice a few things. 1) The use of a turban on Obama's head is irrelevant to the worded message of the billboard. So why did they use it? 2) The use of Obama's middle name is also irrelevant. Extra emphasis is put on the name by using a color that separates it from the rest of his name and the improper use of quotation marks draws more attention. Why call this out when you're talking about abortion, gay marriage, taxes, and gun regulations? A possible explanation is that the secondary message of the billboard is "Obama is a Muslim". Since Obama is a Christian and not a Muslim this would be a lie. If, in fact, this is the secondary message then it could be considered libel. Since the definition of libel is, "A published false statement that is damaging to a person's reputation; a written defamation"

    • Why is it that some people use free speech as their first (and usually only) line of defense to support bigotry, racism, and in this case lunacy?

I can feel the winds of change a-blowin. Since 74 year old racists are a dying breed hopefully we won't have to be subjected to hate/crap like this for too many more years. Nevertheless its still sad to live in America in the 21st Century and see this kind of garbage.

    • I don't seen anything wrong with this sign. I've seen the photos of him wearing a rag. It _is_ his name. And I'm sure all those things will happen and much more.

Racist? Sorry, just don't see how anyone could apply that label to this bill board.

    • in a democracy people need to be educated. otherwise, you cannot vote responsibly. You also need free speech, in order to debate the issues. Lastly you need tolerance, in order to have reasonable discourse.

By saying you are disgusted, and making attacks on the USA and Missouri due to this sign, are not displaying tolerance, reason or an educated response.

This sign poses some questions, that a voter should focus on answering, rather than reacting to it with intolerance, and disgust.

For example, here are some questions that come to mind:

      1. What exactly is Obamas ties to the Muslim religion?
      2. Has he worn a turban before, why ?
      3. Why will there be more abortions? Same sex marriages? Gun regulations? Further, if there will be more of any , do i care ? Am I pro / con these issues?

      4. What is the story with his middle name being Hussein?

      5. If it is true, that obama is a muslim, do I care ?

If I were most of you folks who have posted comments so far though, the only real question i would ask is, How come I cannot think? Why is it that I cannot digest issues, even a simple thing like my thoughts on this picture? Why do I only regurgitate opinions without analyzing them? How can I improve my ability to think?

    • TryThisOn:

You're so right. And I appreciate how you posed your remarks and these questions. It's just unfortunate that the spirit in the manner this billboard was constructed was not due to tolerance.

My impression is, though enlightening, your remarks are rhetorical; however, I can't resist responding.

Obama has told the story of his Christian walk and faith too many times for these stories to continue to be perpetuated. And if YOU (not "you" specifically, TryThisOn) are a Christian yourself, then you need to ask God for the gift of discernment and the gift of love.

Obama has also related the story behind the photo of him wearing traditional Kenyan garb. My question is, why shouldn't he be able to embrace his ancestry from all sides of his family? He sought to learn to about his paternal father and visited Africa. When you go to a foreign land and are embraced by the people, do you reject them, insult them, and not wear their gifts? When you go to a foreign land, don't you even want to indulge in their culture?

That's the biggest criticism about Sarah Palin. That this wealthy successful woman desires the highest office in a multicultural society has never demonstrated a curiosity about the world around her. Not even her closest neighbor, Russia, 60 miles away.

Besides, who has never put on ethnic garb on an occasion? What woman has never worn a Sari? Who has never worn a daishiki? Who has never worn a kilt? Who has never donned a cowboy hat? Who has never put on a sombrero? Who has not worn a Kofia? Who has not worn clogs? Who has not worn moccasins? Or a poncho?

And regarding religion, faith, beliefs -- THEY'RE BY CHOICE. Faith is not genetic. ?? Islam is a religion. Judaism is a religion. Buddhism is a religion. Christianity is a religion. Everyone from Israel is not Jewish. Everyone from Italy is not Christian. And everyone from India is not Hindu.

In the United States, we are very fortunate to be able to believe or not believe, worship or not worship. It's an individual choice. Just as God has given us "free will" -- the ability to choose.

      Back to the billboard:
Some are outraged by it because it mimics the racist caricatures of Jim Crow. "Arab" in America, has become the new nigger.

In our Democratic society, the land of religious freedom, multiculturalism, where its citizens are from everywhere on the planet including the United Arab Emirates, IT IS ALARMING that ANY group of people are castigated because of their religious beliefs, their skin color, their birth name or adopted name.

That's the problem with this billboard.

Wow. Very well said HelpThem. Great response. The only other thing I would add is that while I can respect the questions TryThisOn asks (and couldn't answer them more eleoquently than HelpThem did), the billboard wasn't presented to ask those questions. Ignoring the true intent behind that disgusting billboard (which is to scare people) gives power to they person posting it. I think that would be a mistake. Thanks to both of you though for some thought provoking comments.

    • Yes this is free speech and to millions it is also grossly offensive. Anyone should have the right to say what they like but that does not give anyone the right to offend others. No one would defend racism or insulting people because of the colour of their skin but unfortunately it happens and it may be with us for a long time yet.

What then should decent people do who do find this billboard deeply offensive? Simple really. Deny it the oxygen of publicity. Shun it, do not talk about it, do not spread its ugly message. Completely ignore it and pretend it is not there because the more you dwell on and talk about it it the more it succeeds in its objective of changing minds to its morally abhorrent message.

    • Man shot three times in street by racist gunman - for wearing Barack Obama T-shirt

A man told today how he was shot three times in a London street for wearing a Barack Obama T-shirt.
Dube Egwuatu was buying a mobile telephone top-up card in an off-licence when the gunman confronted him and glared at the top, which carries an image of the Democrat US presidential candidate underneath the legend 'Believe'.
The man then launched into a tirade of racist slurs, shouting 'I f***ing hate n*****s' and urging 36-year-old Mr Egwuatu to leave the shop with him.
Respect: Dube Egwuatu wearing the Obama T-shirt that provoked a racist attack

The man then left the shop but when Mr Egwuatu re-emerged, the attacker was waiting for him in broad daylight with a threatening-looking dog and holding a gun behind his back.
Realising what had sparked the increasingly violent assault, the terrified Mr Egwuatu zipped up his jacket to cover the image of Mr Obama and walked to his car.

But the shaven-headed man, who was white, followed Mr Egwuatu and after pulling open the passenger door pointed the gun at him.
After pleading with the man to leave him alone, the married former street warden put the keys in the ignition and turned the engine on.

The attacker then fired the gas-powered ball-bearing pistol three times, hitting the civil servant in the face, hand and shoulder.
Fearing for his life and bleeding heavily, Mr Egwuatu raced away in his car and found somewhere safe to call for help.

He was taken to hospital and later sent to have a piece of metal removed from his jaw.
Mr Egwuatu, a data analyst with Croydon Council, said: 'The venom in his voice was frightening.
'He was telling me that he was going to kill me.
'I couldn't believe it was happening - and just because I was wearing an Obama T-shirt. He was trying to make me walk somewhere quieter, saying: 'I've got something for you,' and 'I'm going to kill you.'

He added: 'Obama inspires me, his educational track record alone is quite unbelievable - that is why I was wearing the T-shirt.
'I did not think for one minute it could stir up such powerful feelings of hatred and I never said a word to him.'

Mr Egwuatu's wife, Angela, 35, said neither of them had experienced anything like it during their childhood in Nigeria.
Mrs Egwuatu, an immigration officer, said: 'At first my feelings were pure horror and now it is pure anger.
'If he had been carrying a real gun I would have been a widow. It is just ridiculous.

'I don't know how a person's mentality works. Why would a T-shirt get you to the point where you want to shoot someone.'

To the untrained eye, ball-bearing guns like the one used in the attack look every bit like a real firearm.
The potentially lethal weapons are often converted by criminals to fire real bullets, and can be bought easily in high-street shops and on websites.
The Met said it was investigating the incident, which took place in South Norwood, and that police searched a nearby house which the attacker was seen going into.

      No one has been arrested.
This man used free speech to wear his T shirt.. Sometimes free sppech come with terrible consequences...

Maybe, MAYBE Palin will be ready to lead a mass of people larger than 9,000 by 2012. Then again, there are a host of very well qualified women on the Republican side that can be true contenders for the next president after Obama and Biden finish their 2 terms.

Hopefully by then Palin will be able to finish a complete sentence and stop winking at people.

    • I happen to be a West Plains Missouri citizen, I really hope no one judges everyone who lives here just because of some ignorant hick. I would like to note that there IS an intelligent population living within the walls of this city and we will counter act that sign by putting a sign up right next to that sign that says "AMERICA...WHERE YOUR ALOUD TO BE IGNORANT".. (If anyone has any more ideas on what the sign should say then please inform me)My personal belief is that this sign is in fact proof of Ignorance. It's proof that people need to do some research on Obama before investing time and money in making such a ridiculous piece of propaganda. I apologize for the redneck racist population that lives here. I have to face it everyday and it frustrates me as a human being. -Conner-

JacquelineLeona - I commend you and other intelligent citizens of West Plains, Missouri for wanting to put up a billboard that condemns the images and message in the above mentioned billboard in this thread. But please, I beg of you, do not use words that are only going to hurt your cause. Make sure that the billboard says "AMERICA...WHERE YOU'RE ALLOWED TO BE IGNORANT", because if you write aloud instead of allowed or your instead of you're, it will only cause people to point and say, "and they call us ignorant?"

Well, what I don't understand about this billboard is that, im my opinion, abortions and gay marriage should not be a government issue. Also, whoever is president is going to have to raise taxes with the state the economy is right now, the big deal for me is WHO gets their taxes raised.
I don't know anything about guns though, so I won't even touch that subject.

In a perfect world Barack would "embrace" his middle name. We know why he cant do that in this country. The sign this idiot put up proves my point.

Gun Regulations are meant to keep UZIs off the streets. Watch the first Terminator and see how easy it was for Arnie to walk into a gun shop and buy fully automatic weapons. I own several rifles, shotguns, and handguns and I have no problem with the Democratic Party views on Gun control. These regulations are put into place to keep safe gun owners like you and myself protected from the potential dumbass with fully automatic machine guns. Do you really need that kind of firepower to hunt those little Prairie Deer in Texas? I mean how useful is a 50 caliber sniper rifle for Squirrel hunting. Be realistic, and be happy with the guns you own. I sleep safer at night knowing that it's harder to obtain these types of weapons. If you can't put a man down with one shot in self defense with the weapons you own, you sure as hell don't need machine guns right?

I think it's really sad how we've reduced every depiction of a muslim or anyone wearing a turban for that matter into a "terrorist".

As for his middle name, what is it that you think he should do, Jan? Most politicians don't use their middle name much, and it's not like he's ever lied about it, so I don't understand where you are coming from on that...

Or is it possible that the story effected her in some way and she wanted to share it with the community? • While travelling through the Ozarks, I stopped at a bar in the small town of Lebanon, Missourri. I asked the guy sitting next to me, "What do you do for entertainment, here in Lebanon?". He grabbed me by my collar, shoved his face in mine and, with a cigarette and whiskey breath, yelled, "It's pronounced, 'Leb-nin'! You sum bitch!". The bartender broke us up before real trouble started and said, "We're kinda touchy about that 'round here."
Not everyone I met was that bad but, it told me something about attitudes and perceptions.

I almost got in several fights with a roommate of mine in college over the pronunciation of his home town. He was from LaFayette, Georgia, which is pronounced La-Fay-it. I constantly mispronounced it like Lafayette, Louisiana, or the Marquis de Lafayette. He would become absolutely irate at me.

Also, I jokingly pronounced Arkansas "R-Kansas" once when I was passing through the state and it didn't go over too well. Nobody grabbed me by the throat, but I did get some dirty looks.

They must keep it for every election cycle and only shellack the name of the candidate over the top of it.
