Atlanta SWAT teams get insane new militarized weaponry

Atlanta Cops Roll Out SWAT APC

For what?

It’s no big deal, insists the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. It’s just the local cops with a $500,000 APC. For you civilians, that’s Armored Personnel Carrier.

“Don’t be surprised to see an Army tank rolling down a street near you,” chides the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “The Cobb County police department has refurbished a donated Armored Personnel Carrier for officers to use in SWAT situations.”

Apparently, the cops think those on the receiving end of any SWAT operation using this military vehicle are armed to the teeth like the resistance in Iraq or maybe the Taliban in Afghanistan. It certainly is not needed for busting the average dope dealer, even one hopped up on PCP.

Equipped with thermal sensors, computerized tracking devices, night vision, tear gas launchers and other gadgets, the all-black six-wheel unit can hold up to nine SWAT officers.

It has a new engine and transmission, which will allow it to reach a speed of 60 miles per hour.

“In these times, you don’t know what you are facing,” Cobb police chief George Hatfield said. “We want the maximum safety for our officers and the public. We want to be prepared for whatever comes up. This is another tool that will allow us to be quicker and faster in our response.”

The L.A.V. 300 will also send a message to the civilians — increasingly, there is little difference between the cops and the military. In order to get the message out, the APC will be on display at Marietta’s town square, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

    • In case anyone ever reads this again, or is following. The department listed in the article is COBB COUNTY, Georgia. NO PART of the city of Atlanta is in Cobb County. The Atlanta Police Department does not, and will not have any tanks, armored personnel vehicles or armored military vehicles. They can't even keep their fire stations open or pay their cops for forty hours a week. Read a bit further before snapping off. This sounds more like an affluent ( compared to the actual City ) suburb trying to keep its "order" on things. Be glad you live IN the city, and not outside. More accountability here. Also, posters claiming to live in Atlanta...you would know you don't live in Cobb County. If you don't live inside the city limits, pay city taxes and deal with the city's infrastructure, then don't claim you live in the ATL. You don't. Don't be afraid to claim out your Douglasville or Dunwoody pride.

First of all your job is not as dangerous as you make it so stop with the hype. When was the last time your life really was put on the line. You spend most of your time at the local donut spot drinking coffee and eating all the donuts you can. Cops are not the most honest people in the world so come off your high horse. I live in the real world. I know that most cops are brain washed assholes who abuse citizens under the color of authority for personal reasons such as racial hate. Young white males still kids themselves who don't know they are being manipulated full of testosterone building the foundation of the new slave trade the poor, class distinction no longer race driven, so your brother can be a slave. The point I am trying to make is views of law enforcement can very depending on your personal experience. Law enforcement is needed. Shows like first 48 highlight nothing but negative images in the minority communities that can justify the treatment of these people by law enforcement . You don't know about the game. If you are not a part of the solution you're part of the problem.

    • It's obvious from your absurd posts that you're just a plain nut, and no amount of rational thought will ever convince you that cops are not the bad guys out to hold the man down.

I'm sure that lawyer would never lie about the facts, he's only trying to make himself millions of dollars in a lawsuit, and lawyers never lie.

Cops aren't perfect, they make mistakes, when their life is on the line day in and day out they sometimes over react to dangerous situations. When was the last time you walked into your cushy office in fear for your life that the next person you walked up to would try to kill you? That's what I thought.

You sir, are a sheep, walking through your life secure in all the freedoms that other people make sacrifices to give you. You take your security for granted, you go to sleep at night oblivious to the men and women out there keeping you safe. And then you bleat the loudest to condemn them as if they are the evil.

I pray for you that you and your family never need a cop to come save you from the real bad guys. Have a nice life in your liberal, hate-mongering fantasy world.

    • FEMA sources confirm coming martial law:

WMR has learned from knowledgeable Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) sources that the Bush administration is putting the final touches on a plan that would see martial law declared in the United States with various scenarios anticipated as triggers. The triggers include a continuing economic collapse with massive social unrest, bank closures resulting in violence against financial institutions, and another fraudulent presidential election that would result in rioting in major cities and campuses around the country.

In addition, Army Corps of Engineer sources report that the assignment of the 3rd Infantry Division’s 1st Brigade Combat Team (BCT) to the Northern Command’s U.S. Army North is to augment FEMA and federal law enforcement in the imposition of traffic controls, crowd control, curfews, enhanced border and port security, and neighborhood patrols in the event a national emergency being declared. The BCT was assigned to duties in Iraq before being assigned to the Northern Command.

    • I lived in GA all my life. I've seen first hand police abuse there authority. (I realize that not ALL cops are think that way.) I know people from my high school who became cops and they DO NOT need to be trying that job. It easier to become a cop than it is to become a fireman. Firemen put out fires and such. A cop deals with endless scenarios and time and time again the cops are sick of dealing with it and just "do there job" and forget the "serve and protect" part. I have never seen an officer "help" anyone in my life. Only harm them or hassle them. I am really not happy to hear that they now are randomly patrolling Cobb County in a freakin' APC!!

    • OK, I am not disagreeing with the core worries and concerns about civil liberties and freedoms. I am not. However, I want to look at a few things here that come into play with the LAV on the streets.

First, police departments, much like the non-uniformed populace are susceptible to the "cool cars" syndrome. Once another city or department nearby gets new gear, they want one. It called in the British military "Gucci"- when the cool guys get new kit, we have to get the same kit. Immature. maybe, but its a trait of most human beings, envy.

Next, the vehicle itself. The LAV300 is just the newest version of a long history of armored vehicles utilized by police forces- in the 1920s Shanghai Municipal Police utilized special armored cars against extreme situations. The LAV is purposefully aggressive in appearance, but not supernaturally potent in what it does

The picture implies more than the actual details- its painted black and looks angry. At some point, the M16 became a "deadlier" weapon because it was not fitted out in the customary wood stock. What? Its menacing appearance, dubbed 'The Black Rifle", imbued it with extra-normal power based solely on its layout and color. When in reality, if it was painted teal, it would still shoot the same, but wouldn't look as menacing. Psychologically, it intimidates and militarizes a steel plated truck.

When the LAPD faced off against the weapon wielding bank robbers in N. Hollywood, in order to help rescue civilians and fallen comrades from the rampaging criminals, they had to commandeer a private bank armored car. So if the Cobb County police received a former civilian "boxy" armored bank truck (which is mentioned as the armored vehicle for Gwinnett County lawmen) would it be as anger inducing?

Most "armored" cars can only defend against small caliber rifles (.22-.308,) which is what most 'bad guys' could conceivably carry. Nothing magical about it. Additionally, it apparently has been disabled from mounting weapons in the turret.

Finally, the original post mentioned its cost $500,000. But the post neglected to note that is the original cost, but the fact the LAV300 was donated to Cobb County and the department spent $45,000 to retrofit the demilitarized vehicle. And more than likely, they disabled air purification systems, modified the engine, water fording equipment and the paint job.

Lets take a step back, examine the situation from top to bottom.

Just a bit of logical devil's advocate.

    • You gotta fight fire with fire. And with the kind of fire criminals are bringing these days this is becoming more and more necessary. Anyway, it's not like this is the first one of these to ever go into service for a police department so don't act so surprised. Ever watch the show Dallas SWAT?

    • Ahhh...Gwinnett County

I see that is the county where white police murdered a black man who was having a seizure by holding him down and tasering him to death.

The police filmed it and it was put up on Google, but I just checked it and they took it down.

A grand jury in Georgia has not only declined to watch a video of a Taser-related death, it has dismissed all charges in the case.

In the video, Frederick Williams, a 31-year-old father of four, can be seen being Tasered at least five times in the chest (in one minute) while being held down by several deputies in the Gwinnett County Jail.

Williams’ response (his last words, in fact): “Please don’t kill me …”

      _____________________________________

In a letter responding to an article about the case in the Atlantic Journal-Constitution, Melvin Johnson, attorney for Williams’ family, described the circumstances of Williams’ arrest and death.

In summary, this is what happened:

It all began when Williams’ wife called 911 to report that Williams was behaving in a violent manner due to problems caused by medications he had been prescribed for epilepsy. (Bear in mind: Williams had neither threatened nor harmed anyone. Also, he was unarmed. His “violent” behavior, so far, amounted to nothing more than walking up and down his own driveway, “talking crazy.”)

In her 911 call, Mrs. Williams made it clear that her husband’s behavior was a result of his problems with the medication. Also, this information was repeated to the first police officer to arrive on the scene not only by Mrs. Williams, but also a deacon from the Williams’ church. They begged the officer not to approach Williams without backup from other officers, for they were concerned for the officer’s safety.

The officer responded by pulling out his baton, approaching Williams, and shouting for him to shut up. When the grievously afflicted Williams did not shut up, the officer began beating Williams with the baton. Williams reacted by grabbing the baton. A struggle over the baton ensued, during which the officer fell and sustained a minor injury; he then retreated and radioed for backup.

Backup arrived in the form of 10-15 cops. Together, they somehow managed to subdue the “crazy talking” Williams; that is, they all piled in to him and hog-tied him. Very brave.

Meanwhile, Williams’ wife and four young children, also the deacon and others begged the police to take Williams to the hospital for treatment. The police replied: “This guy has injured one of Our Own. We will take him to the jail and deal with him. We have all of the medicine we need at the jail.”

Mrs. Williams tried to give her husband’s medications to the police, but they knew better, of course; they had better medicine at the jail.

Meanwhile, the deacon had called the pastor of the church; the pastor asked to speak to an officer. The pastor too explained that Williams’ behavior was due to epilepsy and begged for medical attention. But he, too, was told the same: Williams will be treated with medicine at the county jail.

The medicine, apparently, was a Taser gun. Five jolts from a Taser, to be precise. Five jolts into the chest. In less than a minute. With several deputies holding him down. Police work at its finest.

In the aforementioned video, one deputy can be heard saying, “Do you want another one?”

    • Absolutely, watch the movie, Hollywood has all the answers and can see the future. You know that movies are real, there is nothing fictional about them. I understand there is a virus that will turn us all into zombies (I Am Legend), machines will take over the world (Terminator 1, 2, and 3), and an asteroid is headed to earth (Armageddon).

We are all doomed any way, who cares what the police do? Sheesh!!! Sad thing is, this guy is no crazier than the rest of you conspiracy theorists.

    • I would have responded as some of you have even 6 months ago, but I got involved and sat on a 6 month term of the Grand Jury from April until this Month. After seeing hundreds and hundreds of cases I completely support our officers having something like this.

After our jury investigating the condition of equipment on many levels, we found that in many cases (contrary to popular belief), the city and county police forces were in need of many essential resources that they simply did not have.

Many of the resources and equipment that they did have was either donated, or purchased from drug seizures and the like. So believe it or not, it's not like the police are just going around blowing money on toys to blow shit up.

BTW for those of you that aren't from Atlanta, keep in mind that the CDC is also located here, so for some of you needing extreme threat situations to justify equipment like this, it's not implausible. The CDC contains the world's deadliest viruses and biological weapons.

And for a few of you regarding race issues: this has nothing to do with racial issues or 'black crime'. Crime is crime, safety is safety. There are tons of people from all sorts of races and backgrounds working for the Atlanta Police Department. It's not like this is going to be parked on boulevard or busting prostitutes on North Ave.... I'm sorry for the injustice in the past, but stop playing the race card.

Lastly, stop assuming anything is a scandal or plot to take away your freedom... shit... every single one of you would be pissing your pants with joy to see that thing, if you or a family member were in a threatening situation.

I know because I fired some bad cops, and prosecuted some as well. But the vast majority, 99%, are good, hard working, peaceful American citizens. I worked for and with police administrators all across the south, and none, not one, were egomaniacal, corrupt, paranoids building arsenals against the citizens. That is assinine, and very easy for you to spout on the internet because you do not have to be truthful, the truth is not near as entertaining.

We uphold the law, our careers, our lives, our time and energy, is dedicated to upholding the law. Do you think we do it for the pay? My wife and children live in the community I served, as do all police families. Are you really crazy enough to believe we want our own families to grow up in a "police state"? Police are normal everyday people, they are not some secret underground force bent on the overthrow of government.

I agree they need to show respect, but you do not see news reports on the hundreds of thousands of police contacts where they showed respect, you only see the one sensational story where some rogue mistreated someone. I have seen hundreds of incidents where the cops were mistreated by the poor citizens, cussed, spat on, beaten, and had to fight for their lives.

How many police contacts have you seen in person, compared to the thousands I saw per year for 26 years? So who is more informed on the % of good cops, me, or you and your liberal rags.

America needs protection of your caliber. Open your eyes tho...all over the world people are getting pissed of at government for many good reasons. IN turn, the paranoid governments build their arsenals against its citizens, bringing them to military level. Paranoid because they want to protect their greed and corruption. America is on self destruct from what I can see.

The DNC and RNC proved beyond a doubt that the police are being ordered, for some strange reason, to keep protesters quiet and arrest anyone even tho they are not breaking laws, like in Denver and StPaul..see video

I sure hope the new president is Obama and he can untangle the mess of hypocrisy, corruption and greed from Capital Hill and Corporate America. Then, America will regain its shine and be on the rebound. One other thing...Police need to show more respect to citizens in all scenarios. You cannot see this, you were a police officer.

    • All this vitriol over one APC?

The NYPD have dozens of V-150's and LAV-25's dedicated to SWAT operations.

The Los Angeles, San Fransisco, and San Diego police departments each have enough armored vehicles and weapons to outfit brigade strength military units.

In Texas, Illinois, and Washington State, they have APC's that were first deployed and perfected in South Africa during the Apartheid era...

So, in other words, the police in this country have been "militarizing" for the past forty years, and all of you are just getting around to noticing?

    • You people have lost your minds, do you see black helicopters in your sleep? How many of you know anything about police operations? I spent 26 years in state police and commanded SWAT missions TO PROTECT INNOCENT CITIZENS. I would have given my right arm for an APC to protect my officers from gunfire when they were risking their lives to save ungrateful morons like you. Could the police have used an APC at Columbine to rescue students? What about the LA bank robbery? Texas sniper incident? Hostage situations? Police officers are your neighbors, you friends, in your church congregations, in your PTA. They leave their homes, wives and children in the middle of the night to risk their lives to save yours, in hurricanes, and hostage incidents, and car crashes. They are the ones who would fight against the public corruption you all seem to think is threatening you. Wise up and thank a cop for the protection you have instead of seeing them as the enemy. Your blind hatred of the people who dedicate their lives to protect you is insane. Would you have been this afraid of the cops rushing INTO the twin towers while everyone else was rushing OUT? You should all be ashamed of yourselves.

They don't appreciate it until they need the help....even then they'll forget who helped them and go right back to the comfort of disliking an entire group as whole.

If one did that with race they'd be called racist....guess it's ok as long as it's not race.

Personally, Its not the actually police officers I'm afraid of. In fact, I have a lot of appreciation for cops and what they do. Its not the people in the police uniform I'm scared of and I'd like to think others fearful of a police state agree.

And people have a bad impression of cops because some of them aren't very moral people or experience people have had with them. Doesnt mean its right. And that goes for everything, generalizing is never right! Just like its not right to think all Arabs are terrorists b/c of 9/11. People have a preconceived notion thanks to some things they have heard, seen or experienced. It doesnt make it right or justify it. But that's the reality. If a buncha of cops stormed into your house at 3 AM and killed your father when you were young, you wouldnt like cops. Doesnt matter if your father did something wrong, thats just the psychological effect it would have on you. Same thing with 9/11. And so many other things. Race or not, its not ok either way.

      Hey mister use-to-be-know-it-all-cop,

Two years ago, APD killed a 90 year old Black woman on a botched up drug raid. THEY KICKED THE DOOR DOWN, ON A NO-WARRANT SEARCH AND CAME IN BLAZING. THEY HAD THE WRONG HOUSE. After they realized that they had blew it, they had the audacity to try to cover it up by the having one cop shoot another, and then try to blame it on the dead old lady, plant narcotics on her person, and use a phantom informant as their source .. The courts ,here in Atlanta, found them guilty of the cover-up, but not the murder, so,,,.... SHUT THE FUCK UP. Cops are human . They are not innocent all of the time.. I can give you countless stories of police corruption here in Atlanta, and the state of Georgia. Five years ago, the former Chief of Police of Dekalb County (Arthur Langford), had the new chief, (Derwin Brown) murdured by his own department, on the first day of the job, in the drive-way of his own home, on his wedding anniversary, while his family watched from the inside, with the lights out for a surprise party. His wife and children watched helplessly, as he was ruthlessly gun down by rogue cops from his own department.. The prosecuting attorneys botched up the trial, and everyone except for the former chief walked. The feds got them later on,lesser charges

Go tell somebody else about all of great things that the cops are doing here in Georgia.

We are not children , stop trying to talk down to us. I will say it again...... The only place that you will ever see S.W.A.T. here in Atlanta, is in the Black neighborhoods, and the Black side of Downtown Atlanta.

I appreciate good police doing good deeds, but they have never done anything for me.

In fact would never call the police for anything. They are likely to show up and beat you or taser you to death like they have done in other cities or cause some other kind of trouble.

I'm sure you approve of cops tasering people to death too don't you?

I've never been helped by police.
      I've only ever been harrassed.

I've had tools and large equipment stolen right off my property, and when i reported it to the police, they didn't even come to investigate, they just told me, "well that sucks."

I've been pulled over (while walking) by police and harassed. They took my ID and called it into the station, only to find out that I've never committed a crime.

If people stated "I don't like black people. They've never done any good towards me" would that be accepted?

It should be...based on this asinine replies.

and the RNC and DNC was horrible behavior on BOTH SIDES....not just the police but the FALSE PEACE like people who egged on the problems with taunts.

      des10,

It looks like you are a novice at this. I do not see any facts at all to support your anger, which in turn makes it only an opinion, and that is OK. We all are entitled to our opinions. If you had brought some facts, however, you would be doing more than getting pissed off.

Maybe you ought to just stick to writing graffiti on the train walls of Dekalb ave. or the Krog street tunnel.

There are some good cops out there. I know some of them that are great people. I also know some that have the God complex., especially when it comes to the Black community. They get away with it because,
COPS DO NOT SNITCH ON COPS !!!

First they stole 2 elections… the first by perverting the supreme court…nothing happened…Then 9-11 & a war based on a 1000 lies & the treacherous hoisting of a CIA agent… nothing happened… they proceeded to shred the constitution, kidnapped imprisoned & tortured the world over, spied on all of us & fired the best US attorneys… nothing happened…conducted a thinly veiled ethic cleansing during Katrina…nada…now they are taking us to the cleaners…

Is there a limit to the damage this executive branch can inflict to the USA ?

      It seems not !

    • dress police in military clothes, give them military weapons, and vehicles, train them in military warfare and you can still call them 'police'. What the heck is the difference? they are flippin' military in disguise! Atlanta....hmmm, something to do with canceling the elections..pulling Obama from the ballot? very strange indeed.

that's your justification for militarizing the police force? the elections??

there've been riots before, there will be riots again, but this is unacceptable. you as a conservative should be at the front lines against this kind of power being wielded by the government. ideologically, libs and reps are practically the same now, the government is wildly out of control and needs to be brought in hand. i suppose you would also justify active duty federal troops being used for riot suppression. will your fear never end??

you're too tied up in party loyalty to see it...sad sad sad

I'm tied up with seeing that neither side is better than the other. But just like the underdog is awesome to root for I do so with bullies and mob mentality.

This website has some angry people that state they are more happy than the right....sure.

If I were on a website that had more Republicans and less Democrats I would be standing up for Obama.

It is the nature of the beast. I think people refuse to think without having to be right, and that's sad.

Imagine that ? The home of Dr. Martin Luther King and the birthplace of civil rights is getting ready to turn the tanks loose on their own people.

Sounds likes the south is still the south.

    • US 1st Brigade was deployed to Georgia to respond with"non lethal" weapons in case of citizen unrest, is the urban tank for backup?

The police are militarized all over the country, Blackwater stands waiting, Bush has his own army and his own treasury as 100 billion of the "bailout" money is under his own direct personal control.

These are the final acts of a closing society.

    • Easy, send this link to everyone you know. Let them see the photo. Seriously, how many people do you know really want armored tanks roaming their city streets?

Talk with your city council members/mayor's office, they control the police forces' budget. Do we want to spend our tax dollars on tanks? I don't think so.
