Hollywood's Top 10 Atheists

Jodie Foster, for example, proclaims respect for the religious while not believing. Bill Maher grants that there might be a God but also ridicules worshipers.
Surprising names pop up on any catalog of Hollywood's most irreligious. (We've listed them alphabetically.)
WOODY ALLEN: He told Reader's Digest, "If you actually have faith, if you believe that there's more to life in a positive sense, then of course it's a wonderful thing." Then he added, "I can't bring myself to do it. If I'm sitting next to a guy and he has true belief, I look at him and think, ‘poor thing, you really are deluded'."
FAME WITHOUT FAITH (Top row) Bruce Willis, Bill Maher, (Middle row) Billy Joel, and Carl Reiner. (Bottom row) Woody Allen and John Malkovich. Each doubts or does not believe that a creator exists.
JODIE FOSTER: She told Entertainment Weekly she's an atheist but added, "I absolutely love religions and the rituals. Even though I don't believe in God." And asked by E! Online whether she ever prays to God, she answered, "No, absolutely never." Foster says she celebrates both Christmas and Hanukkah with her children and that she only has questions so far and no answers.
BILLY JOEL: The singer publicly broached the topic early in his career, saying during an interview that he is an atheist and positing that religion is a source of many of the world's problems. Then he told Billboard magazine in 1994, "I still feel very much like an atheist in the religious aspects of things," but added, "There are spiritual planes I'm aware of that I don't know anything about and that I can't explain."
ANGELINA JOLIE: The actress is making Atlas Shrugged, the 1957 novel by famous Libertarian-atheist Ayn Rand, into a movie. Asked during an interview with The Onion whether God exists, Jolie said, "For the people who believe in it, I hope so. There doesn't need to be a God for me."
BILL MAHER: Maher co-wrote and starred in Religulous, a movie which mocked all religions, especially Christianity. On Larry King Live, Maher said that "all religious people have a neurological disorder" and that religion is "insanity by consensus."
JOHN MALKOVICH: He has called himself an atheist but rarely expounds on the matter. Malkovich once said. "I believe in people, I believe in humans, I believe in a car, but I don't believe something I have absolutely no evidence of for millennia."
IAN MCKELLAN: Tom Hanks' co-star in The Da Vinci Code said during a press tour promoting the film, "I've often thought the Bible should have a disclaimer in the front saying, ‘This is fiction.' I mean, walking on water?" The actor, an outspoken advocate for gay rights, refers to himself as an atheist.
KEANU REEVES: He reportedly has called himself an atheist but told journalists abroad while promoting the 2005 supernatural thriller Constantine that he is less skeptical about the concept of heaven and hell. In Constantine, Reeves plays a man whose soul has been condemned.
CARL REINER: The Emmy-winning writer and actor best known for his work on The Dick Van Dyke Show calls himself an atheist. On occasion, he has said that "man invented God, not the other way around." He jokingly said, "There are 15 things I know about God, and one is that he is allergic to shellfish." He also complains of too many commandments. "You only need one: Do not hurt anybody."
BRUCE WILLIS: That's right. Even Hollywood's conservatives sometimes are hostile to religion (granted, Willis' conservative credentials often are exaggerated). In 1998, he told now-defunct George magazine that organized religions "are dying forms" and that "modern religion is the end trail of modern mythology."

I disagree, I see people converted to religion all the time. Then they send their money in to the Lord via that church. I don't believe God is broke or poor and the sad thing about giving money to a church is that it robs the giver of the rewards of seeing the people they could have given it to on a more personal basis and the light it brings into their lives. That is truly rewarding. It can really touch the heart of all involved.

I'm a life-long Christian. But I don't understand the animosity atheists have for Christians. Hey,I don't care if you believe Rumanian-Jug-Hoppers are gods or if you believe in nothing--What difference does it make? Christians do feel compelled to enlighten. That is part of the curse. Its not so much the part where they want to enlighten you but that they feel they know the truth and you do not and since you do not, they are better than you. It comes as a condescending tone of: "here, I will fix you"! I think that is one of the main sources for the rub.

Erin _BC am tired of the stupid and flawed argument christians use about how we can't see air but it exists,we know air exists because it and many other things the human eye cannot see, like viruses bacteria, sound waves, were scientifically proven to exist with technonlogy. God has yet to be proven. If you are going to argue that something we cant see and cant yet prove in another way is real, than there can be other Gods that exist as well, such as the ones in the Hindu religion, neither has a greater chance of existing than the other, so really according to your own logic, you should believe in the possibility of many Gods, not just one, so actually you believe in a Christian God, because you were taught Christianity.

to Ragan as a Christian maybe i can enlighten you. Yes it is true we can't see God. But, the whole point in that is to learn to use faith. If you only believe in what you see then you have no faith and if that't the case then how could people believe in air you can't see that either. I believe in God not because that was what i was taought but because of the many things God has done for me. Like heal my eyes so i don't need thick glasses and the many other things. As for people who use God's name for an excuse for what they do, that is just a cop out, you should be smart enough to realize people like Jim Jones used God as a ploy to pull people in but it was not God who told him to kill those people it was Jim Jones. I'm pretty sure Jim went to hell, don't go to hell over a lack of evidence Ragan. God bless You ; )

Erin_BC:
I was raised in a so called Christian home but I have come to a position that religion is a concoction of man made interpretations of something they think, felt or observed. They take it and do their best to impose that upon others that are of a different belief. This is fine but the problem comes when this becomes a tool to decimate, discriminate or to demean another. Religion has a tendency to plant the seed for this and then nurtures it along. In time, someone pays the ultimate price for being different.
History is filled with death and destruction caused or promoted by the hands of those waving religion in their hands. I don't think there is or ever has been a country that is free from this curse of having a murderous religion. In time, religion enables or justifies it's members to cause harm or carnage, hate or contempt against any that are different. Evidence of this is everywhere not only through history but in the present moment.
Religion can be a good thing but it is not the same thing as God. They are two distinctly different things. Faith is a beautiful thing and can have a tremendous power. I have seen the results of it as well. It can't be proven, just as the existence of God can't be proven. Religion doesn't prove the existence of God or the power of faith. That only comes from one's life experiences and it isn't something you can transfer to someone else. The only way to attempt to transfer it is by the example of the life you lead. Nothing more.

If you should be caught on a street talking to God or Jesus Christ, you just may be locked up as a drug addict or just a nut who has flipped. Sure you have to go to church or a house of God to talk to God but who is to say if God is there or is he pervading the universe in which case he just could be by your side but no matter you will be treated as some nut it you perform your rituals on the street. How many creeps have said they are Jesus Christ or God and many have been guilty of high crimes in the name of God. Who is to prove them right or wrong? This religious fanaticism or extremism should not be allowed in a civil society and teaching ignorance and mythology as factual history should be criminal for it is nothing short of misinformation and lieing and thanks to politics we have had our share of that for two hundred years.

Since the christians believe so strongly in their invisible God, Then I and all of you should also be invisible too. True? Since there is not one photo or image of Jesus or his mother, how can so many idiots see Jesus or his mother in everything from the toilet bowl to the piece of toast, slice of cheese, tree, garage door and many other things? I guess if you can believe in an invisible God it is easy to see all kinds of invisible images and creatures. Bill Maher may be right but there are so many people tied to religion. It is certain that the wealthy love this insanity because if people can believe in the invisible world they can be politically totally gullible and government must love this because this is where loyalty lies. I guess that we should accept the fact that the world is invisible and seeing people and Jesus or his mother is just a sign of an insane halucinating world.Just admit it people we are all gaga.

Just because Scientists cannot see the wind the air or even atoms, just stop and think of the myriads of appliances and gadgets that have been invented and made to work even though we cannot see the electrons and atoms. Without Physicists we would not have XRay machines and MRI's or Cat scans to discover the thousands of illness's we are all subjected to.Physics and mathematics have proven the many theories turned fact by the mere ability to construct and use them as practacle machines of this age. As early as The Egyptian,Greek and Roman Empires a small group of men had by themselves thought for themselves and created the theory of atoms. Thanks to christianity, Popes and Church's the real science and scientists were impeded in their search for the truths. When the telephone and radio were created, electronic mathematics also was created. Without common Math, Algebra and Trigonometry we would still be living in shacks and still hunting with bows and arrows. Among other thiings that has contributed to this twentyfirst century progress was China, Persia and Egypt. Schools of science and learning were created long before any Christianity. Egypt, Assyria and Persia and china were involved in the quest for the universal truths. Even now scientists are learning to construct and use the machinery from the world of nanotechnology and soon new universes will be opened up to reveal the elegant infinitesmal world inside of the Atom. The world of Quantum Mechanics. I suggest that all people should learn the fundamental science of this world we exist in. We know many of the properties of the atoms but not why and how they apply to we as a macro organism in this vast universe of illusion surrounded by a universe of Dark Matter and Dark Energy.

Just why do you idiots have to label everyone with your own name calling. What you call an atheist is a common ordinary human being who has no interest in the labeled christian hipocrite fantasies. And yes I call christians heathens, Pagans and hipocrites. The same goes for lableing politically oriented beings as liberals and leftists, centrists etc. Your all a bunch of fools. There are only two types of Politically oriented humans and that is a common human being and a variety known as corrupt, crooked self serving banker and corporate owned fascist, American mafia criminal. There that is a part of the title for politicians and their idol worshipers.

"You'd think hollywood stars would drop to their knees every day to give thanks for their fame, fortune, and beauty — but the ugly truth is, a surprising number are atheists."
Why would they drop to their knees to thank an imaginary friend for things they did themselves? That isn't an ugly truth, its just the plaint truth that a growing percentage of the general public are atheists, thus a percentage of actors will be as well.
This is a badly written and obviously biased article. Being an atheist does not mean being "hostile to religion", it just plain means you do not believe in a deity. Your need to twist that is also quite showing.

Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt devote a fair amount of their time and money to humanitarian efforts. To me this speaks volumes as to the caliber of people that they are.
Do they believe in God? NOT REQUIRED. Will they it make to the big place in the sky? Who Knows!
If they don't, it won't be because they don't believe in God or because they don't go to some organized religion.
If there is a heaven there will be many church goers that will probably not find it and many atheists that will. Won't that be ironic.

If God is so good at letting people know he exists by punishing them, why doesnt show himsellf or at least answer those prayers people send to him. It is just once in a while by some coincidence that something good happens andpeople say that God answered their prayers. But I wonder Why this god destroys so many people and reaps total destruction all over this earth? I caint believe that innocent baby's and men women and children have been destroyed by earthquakes, Floods, Hurricanes and tornados. Not to mention animals trees and vegation. I am sure that if there were a God there would be an expression of more compassion. I agree with Mr. Degrasse if there is a God he is doing his best to destroy us and he's doing a pretty good job. I am also sure that many of those GI's who have died in battle prayed, but his reward was death. God was too busy to help them. Bah

Ragan:
Maybe your ideas about God are wrong.
Maybe your ideas about good and bad are too simple and narrow.
I had an enlightened moment speaking with a Tibetan monk who came to my university to make a sand mandala. He said, "in some religions, they decide what's good, what's bad. In buddhism, we know that we dont' get to decide. The action decides. For some living in a city is heaven, for others it is hell. Me, I have to live in the nature, with the trees and animals and birds. So for me living in the city is bad. Murder, that's bad for everybody involved. Things work themselves out in this way."
Taoism recognizes that there is no good and bad in life, context makes them so. And in time, context evens things out so it's all kind of a wash.
There is such a thing as injustice, but we don't get to decide what's good and what's bad.

Far too narrow in your thinking, Ragan.
What makes you think that God controls everything that happens? That if something you think is bad happens, it is because either God caused it or allowed it to happen? That Gods only option in answering prayer is to do it our way?
Gods compassion is most apparent after you pass on and you either experience Him or miss Him forever.

John Malkovitch's statement though irks me.
I am philosophically a monist and a Taoist. To say that you believe in people, cars, trees, things, but don't believe in God... what do you think all that stuff IS?!
Study particle and quantum physics. Your brain will reach the ends of knowledge. There are areas of knowledge that we know are scientifically unknowable.
What is existence? Maybe it's not that God doesn't exist, but that your ideas about God don't apply.

Being agnostic instead of an atheist has nothing to do with a lack of bravery. You should really reevaluate your opinion because you’re spouting nonsense in an effort to sound cool, or brave. Since this is the 21st century and not medieval times, proclaiming a lack of faith is not particularly noteworthy in the cool nor brave categories since everyone and their mother has already done it.

I am assuming that you are talking about atheist actors playing the roles of religious people on screen. It is not quite the same thing, but gay actor Chad Allen, who plays a gay detective in the movies "Third Man Out" and "Shock to the System," was attacked by right-wing Evangelicals for playing a Christian missionary in a film. Evidently, only Evangelical Christians, who definitely are never gay, are supposed to play missionaries in films. One can imagine where this could lead. Only Buddhists would be allowed to play the Lord Buddha on film. If you wanted to be cast in any movie about British history, you would have to be a member of the Anglican church and so on. I always thought that one of the main components of acting was playing characters who were not yourself.

Sensible people. I consider myself an atheist. Every culture has or had their own beliefs before missionaries, colonialists etc invaded and proclaimed that god only looks like a particular race, has a particular hair texture etc.
Many religions are just used to pursue specific agendas like racial superiority. You can be a good person without worshiping some guy who throws a tantrum and punishes you if you don't. - 3 years ago

@Elijah-
Atheism is not like religion for many reasons, mainly the lack of deities, rituals and doctrine. People jump to conclusions and call Atheism "radical" and assume that all atheists are arrogant and as you put it, "no different" than their religious counterparts. I respectfully disagree on many levels.
Religions have been in the public eye for...well, forever really. The atheist viewpoint deserves to be heard as well, and religious people should not view it as an "attack" or "war" whenever it's suggested that god may NOT exist. No REAL war has ever been launched over the principals of atheism, but many have over religion. You seem to be jumping to the conclusion that just because you're an atheist, you are judging all religious people around you and somehow unable to have a lovely dinner party with your friends. I have lots of friends who believe in god and we are able to have very interesting conversations on the topic without it getting offensive. As Obama said, "We can disagree without being disagreeable." For some people religion is very touchy, and the concept that god doesn't exist automatically offends them.
I am all for relating and comparing theories to find the truth. However, you hit a huge snag when the consensus is "at least you believe in something" or "we all have faith", because it still leaves atheists in this outsider role. It's important to understand that Atheists are still fighting to have their voice heard.

DeliaTheArtist:
To be fair, strong atheism (the claim that there is no god/gods/supernatural forces) is somewhat like a religion because it makes the very strong claim of saying that there are none of these entities or forces. There is no way to logically disprove them, much like how there's no way to logically prove them. That's why I am a weak atheist, or as I like to call myself "agnostic atheist". I just simply examine the arguments and what little "evidence" believers have for their claims, determine them to be inadequate, deny their claims, and live my life as if there are no supernatural forces. I do not have to make a bold claim that a strong atheist posits, and I get to maintain my atheistic status. Fuckin' sweet. Now I'm open to the idea that these forces actually exists, as any rational being should be, but I will need a phenomenally great deal of evidence to change my stance. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Okay Delia is totally right and ccashman it is not like a religion because of the fact that you can't say that gods don't exist because you can't prove it. Man wrote the bible, man wrote twilight and harry potter so I guess I can't disprove those either. I guess there's a chance that wizards, and vampires exist. Or I could just go on the fact that the bible was written by a human being sniffing some burning bush who wrote that the earth is flat and the sky is water. I could go on that and surely if god told them what to write in the bible then surely god would know what god created. Maybe I'm retarded but when I roll play dough into a ball I goddamn know it's round.

For those that don't suffer from the grand delusion of religion, you will never laugh harder!

Ha, that's the biggest bunch of crap I've ever heard. Atheism is hardly popular, and it's not exactly something most people jump in and out of.

There are a lot of people in the world that preach acceptance, however when their beliefs are challenged, they are the first ones to tell others how their beliefs are right, and other beliefs just don't make sense.

The reason I posted this article was that after seeing Bill Maher's "Religulous", it is exciting to see other high-profile figures speaking their beliefs without fear.

RCS - an agnostic is usually a polite atheist -
The fact that some people are brave enough to speak the truth to power, and proclaim themselves to be atheists, is beautiful. I applaud anyone who rejects ignorance and superstition.

No. Agnosticism is the state of mind that one doesn't know if their is some old white-bearded dude in the clouds - or higher power. They're just openminded and still leave it open to some new 'evidence'.
Atheism is pure ignorance and arrogance as you see in Bill Maher when he crudely mocks people. They're very skeptical and not open to mature debate. (I actually like Maher's comedy and his phrase 'religion is insanity by consensus' is genius and so true).
Gnosticism is pre-Christianity. Where Christianity was organized as a political tool by Constatinople and popularized by the Roman Empire after they merged it with tid-bits of other earlier cults and sects. They borrowed the seasons/solistices/equinoxes/moon phases, rituals and symbolisms from them, Xmas for example is to do with the birth of Mithra the sun god on you guessed it December 25th.
Ironically Jesus wasn't even a 'Christian'. Which cracks me up - it was invented 300 years after he died. Nor even a Jew. He detested 'organized religion' which would be so hilarious if it weren't so sad.

Everyone has a right to be religious or not-religious. That applies to Hollywood actors and actresses, too; it's their business! Though I am a believer myself, I happened to like what Jodie Foster had to say. In addition, Bill Maher is very funny about everything. By the way, a person who neither believes nor disbelieves is an agnostic, not an atheist.

Very interesting, like naz said I don't see how this is a "ugly truth" as the article puts it- it's actually very refreshing!
It goes to show you the way the article starts what the mentality of people can be. "You'd think hollywood stars would drop to their knees every day to give thanks for their fame, fortune, and beauty", as if you need to believe in god and pray to be thankful!

Can't say I'm a fan of how the article says that this is a "sad truth" but in the age of celebrity Scientology it's nice to see people in Hollywood not afraid to say they don't believe
