Dog saves other injured dog lying on a highway

DeliaTheArtist
WOW.

Does this make you see dogs, or animals in general, differently than you did before?

This video really touched me, and also begs the questions of what emotions dogs and other animals have.

    • A truly amazing video...one cannot watch this and not be heartbroken and yet uplifted at the same time...simply awe inspiring! As one who grew up with dogs and cats, I have no doubt they have the same feelings/emotions as us humans :)

    • SF Chronicle gave a brief description of this event, they said they didn't know what happened to the rescuer dog:

      (12-08) 15:22 PST SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) --

Chileans have a new hero: an apparently homeless dog that pulled the body of another dog through traffic off a busy highway. A surveillance camera on a Santiago freeway captured images of a dog trotting past speeding cars to pull the lifeless body of the other canine, which had been run over by a vehicle, away from traffic and onto the median strip.

The scene was broadcast by Chilean television stations and then posted on Web sites such as YouTube.com, and hundreds of thousands of people had viewed versions of it by Monday.

Highway crews removed both the dead and live dogs from the median strip of the Vespucio Norte Highway shortly after the Dec. 4 incident. But the rescuer dog ran away.

Authorities say images of the rescue prompted some people to call and offer to adopt the dog, but neither highway workers nor a television crew could find they animal.

    • Dogs might eat other dogs in times of severe lack of food but I'm sure the pack these two belong to in this situation have had plenty to eat. More likely this is the alpha male's mate or the alpha female. They form bonds that last for years. The strength of the pack is the strength of the alpha pair. Every dog in the pack knows its place within the hierarchy. The pack is dominated by the alpha male and female.

It is obvious to me that these two are from the same pack and also could be the alpha pair. That dog, either the male or female alpha pair is hunkering over his/her mate protecting them from the oncoming cars. He/she even looks around to see if there are any cars coming. You cannot tell me this dog isn't intelligent.

I'm no biologist, but I did stay in a Holiday Inn Express last night.

    • I love dogs just as much as the next person, but doesn't it seem much more logical that the dog was taking it off the road in order to eat it in peace?

    • Dogs have been known to save their human masters with similar feats of heroism ever since humans domesticated them. Science has kept a blind eye to animals and emotions, continuing to believe in Pavlov's learned behavior, but no one who has ever owned a dog can deny they have emotions similar to humans. Just because an animal cannot speak a language we readily understands, it is thought they have no emotions. We humans are so superior, in our heads at least.

This film didn't surprise me at all, touched me, yes. but we have seeing-eye dogs, rescue dogs and just plain ole mutts that do similar things every day. I think what surprises people is that the dog behaved so "human-like" when dogs behave like this every day. People who study wolves know this. The dog was behaving like a dog does, but this is just the first time a dog has been "caught on tape".

I was watching a program on National Geographic about dogs and I know dogs are smart but I was surprised when they said that tests have shown that the average house dog whose around people a lot has a listening vocabulary of about 65 words. They said the dogs know the words but not being able to talk they can't share them with us. I won't tell this to anyone but a dog lover like you because they wouldn't believe it anyway.

    • To those who think this video is fake because the dog is using his front legs to pull with. My lab uses his front paws to pull with when he gets a ball or bone stuck under the furniture. He's a little dog so maybe he has found out that he can move things better with his paws instead of his teeth.

    • My question is, would a human risk that much in the same scenario for another human? What do our instincts tell us? Are our minds and logic sometimes partly to blame for our pathetic and selfish behavior?

    • FAKE? I don't know about that. For the record, I didn't just pull this off Youtube out of nowhere, I saw it on CNN first- not saying that it couldn't be faked, just that it was reported by legit news sources before I got to it.

It seems pretty real to me. There are stories of dogs doing all sorts of wonderful things, even being able call 911 for their owners(http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/6359754/).

I grew up with 2 Saint Bernards and saw them use their paws to move stuff around all the time, I don't see how that's so outrageous!

    • I don't know if my Lab would save another dog but I know he would try to save me. The more love and attention you give a dog the more intelligent he becomes. People underestimate our wonderful furry friends.

    • Thanks for the cynicism. Whether it's true or fake, amazing or mundane, it's still an act that has the power to make every one of us think and feel. People love dogs because of the unconditional love that their dogs give to them. A very moving video. Thanks for the submission!

    • Sorry folks, it's FAKE!

Dogs don't drag objects using their paws. If the 2nd dog would've used it's teeth to gently pull the 1st dog, it would've been acceptable. But never has a dog used it's front legs in the manner in which we are shown in this video. It would be possible, but had this actually happened, it would be like watching a chimp play Hotel California on a 12 string acoustic.

      Sorry. It's fake.

    • Dogs and humans are the only species' on the planet that will sacrifice their basic instinct of "self-preservation" for another species. Sorry, cat-lovers, your cat will not run into a burning house to save you. Your dog will.

Dog parks will show how into one another they are. If one gets hurt they don't care enough to wonder...they don't know each other.

I'm thinking that they were running around together and one got hurt and the other pulled him to safety because of loyalty..friendship.

The type of care humans have for other humans they don't know is not shared by animals. However, it isn't impossible for animals to have such. I'm stating that I think that it's mostly a human ability.

I'm sure there are studies that show that some species of monkey took on another monkey as the mother as they have with other species such as a dog giving milk to tiger cubs....stuff like that.

But I'm talking about hurt animals and hurt humans.

If there is an accident someone who doesn't know the people will stop and see if everyone is alright.

A deer running about seeing another deer get shot...will not go and see if that deer is alright should the hunter not pick the deer up. They don't know each other.

They care for who is within their 'pack' and no one else who looks like them will get a care from them, because they don't know each other.

Great video, though. It's very touching and I can't believe someone didn't stop and help.

Goes to show that humans don't feel so connected with animals and their well being as some might profess. I bet a bunch of PeTA people drove right past. haha.

    • I think it's more like he has a great sense of loyalty.

If it was a random dog he did not know....then I could understand asking about feelings. But if it is a dog he does know then it's just loyalty.

    • This disgusts me for one reason:

anyone remember the video of the older man getting hit by a car and NO ONE stopped their cars or stopped to help him?

and yet this dog darts right out there to help its fellow canine.

why, as a whole of humanity, are we so cowardly and selfish?

    • When I was growing up, I was a climber. I'd climb onto the roof the house, up into trees and date palms, etc. Of course, I would always get into trouble for climbing into various unsafe places.

We had an Irish Setter that would grab onto my pant leg and prevent me from climbing into places where I would get into trouble. What was amazing was that she seemed capable of distinguishing between the places where I got into trouble and those I didn't (such as the swing set).

      Dogs are amazing.

    • ok very moving, but it just puts in perspective the failure urban design by having no consideration for nature and serving the 'superior'... AUTOMOBILE. This and all the roadkill should get people to wonder how animals are really suppose to get around if we pave the planet over.

    • Saw something simliar first hand. Except one of the dog died by the side of the road, but the companion dog keeps trying to wake the dog up, but would not leave it's side. I cannot help but cry as I sit in traffic looking at the situation.

    • awesome post, delia.

it shows that humanity, or love for one' s kind, or love for others living, exists and is natural.

humans, in general, could learn a great lesson by living life as this heroic dog, for just this moment.

It said something like "There is an overpopulation of dogs, so scenes like that are common, if they want to stop scenes like that they will have to find a solution to the overpopulation of dogs"

    • it's touching, but it's neither amazing nor incredible. altruism is an adaptive trait. it's absurd to think humans are the only ones that possess it.

notice how no humans in the video did anything until designated professionals arrived.

The rescue dog was definitely smart evidenced by his actions. It looked for more oncoming traffic, appeared real cool, calm and collected about it as well. I want to know what happened to injured dog now.

    • Amazing !!

I tend to think in terms of how K-9's relate with their humans and our society, rather than how they behave to each other. I guess I shouldn't be surprised, but watching the valiant efforts of one dog to save another was really moving.

Thanks Delia - great post !!
