WASHINGTON – Rep. Jesse Jackson Jr. said Wednesday he openly sought appointment to Barack Obama's Senate seat but denied offering favors in return to Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich and said he was not involved "whatsoever in any wrongdoing."

A lawyer for Jackson acknowledged that the Illinois Democrat is "Senate Candidate 5" in the 76-page federal complaint filed against Blagojevich, who was arrested Tuesday. Wiretapped conversations suggest Blagojevich felt the candidate would raise campaign money for him in exchange for being appointed to the Senate seat vacated by the president-elect.

Jackson, a seven-term House member and son of civil rights activist Jesse Jackson, told reporters in Washington that he spoke with the U.S. attorney's office Tuesday.

"They shared with me that I am not a target of the investigation and that I am not accused of any misconduct," said Jackson, who left the crowded session without taking questions.

U.S. attorney's spokesman Randall Samborn would not confirm or deny Jackson's assertions.

    • Honesty, integrity, morality, character are not political attributes held more tightly by one party or the other, but human charactaristics which we all either choose to uphold or choose to see as optional.

      I believe that Mr. Jackson sees these characteristics as optional, attempting to 'bend' the truth to his benifit as it were.

    • No Kenny, I can admit that article has nothing to do with your Bush obsession or Bush in General. This article is about DIRTY Chicago politics. And the up coming film fest, featuring the Governor of Ill. Maybe Jessie Jackson jr. , and if were especially lucky......President Elect Barack Obama. But I wouldn't count on that one.     • Lets call it like is Katanajon, Jesse Jackson Jr. has not been charged with anything yet. Keep dreaming yourself. The Ill. Governor was trying to sell the soon to be vacant senate seat to the highest bidder. He is a democrat and corrupt and should resign I admit that but you are still so partisan that you've been blinded and can not admit that Bush is a criminal himself. And now your praising Fitzgerald but when he nailed scooter he was just going after a republican. Come on be consistent, a criminal is a criminal.
