I became a statistic

Monday, January 12, 2009 started out as a typical morning. I awoke around 6 am, still groggy from staying up late the night before. I quickly freshened up, got dressed and was off to work. I made it to work with about 10 minutes to spare. I swiped in, put away my coat and proceeded to get my free coffee that is provided for us on Monday's. By this time it's about 7:30 and time to get started. I work a few accounts while flip flopping between my PC and my cellphone (gotta poke back on Facebook). Then a email is sent " Department meeting at 12:30" I accept and continue working. One of the supervisors comes around to see who needs to adjust their lunch schedule. I told her that I would need to adjust my time. As I am working another email pops up " Specialist report to conference room at 9:30". After that brief meeting I walk back to my cubicle and I noticed that my supervisor wasn't around. The admin assistant said she was fired, and the meeting was to get us away from our desk so that we would not witness it. At 11:15 I went to lunch for an hour. While I am working another email pops up, this time it's addressed to certain people. I glance over the names, I see the name of one of the "perfect" employees. I thought to myself it can not be bad if she is included, it must be about SAP training or something. Fast forward...We arrive at the meeting, and the words that so many people are hearing nowadays begin to utter. " Due to the current economic situation we have been forced to make a very tough business decision to downsize etc etc etc. After nine years on the job, the job is no more.

I hope you all have a wonderful Tuesday and pray that it is not like my Monday.

    • Sorry, friend. That really sucks.

Some advice from a person who knows what it feels like to get downsized: Take it from me - don't waste any time filing your unemployment claim. Don't even bother consulting your pride on this one - just do it, if you haven't already. Remember - the sooner you file, the sooner you'll be receiving checks for around $300 - $400 a week while you look for a new job. And that is definitely better than no income at all.

Good luck man, and hang in there.

    • I feel bad for so many because the industry I'm in has received funding from the bailout that we didn't even ask for. I have yet to graduate from college but I'm watching the field shrink and I'm wondering how I'll pay back the $50,000 debt I've incurred over the last 4 years.
If you're not adverse to moving, there are many opportunities in the Pacific Northwest for degreed mechanical engineers, and I receive emails for positions that open up regularly in Virginia for environmental engineers. I'm not going into the field at all, but if you can train for a career in energy efficiency you've got it made. They're increasing budgets across the board and hiring like crazy. You don't even have to learn to poke people with a needle or take blood pressure to get in, which is fabulous for those of us who don't interact well with people ^_^
Good luck to you, I hope that in the end you will find what works best for you.

    • My brother is a Aerospace Machinest, works 60 hour weeks and showed up to work on wednesday when the manager came out and said: "We are asking for voluntary layoffs and if no one volunteers we have a list of five that will be going tonight.

Night after night more and more have been given a box which to pack their things.

I just remember the Boeing workers quote "Hold the line til '09!" And boeing is doing some serious cuts now because the union raped them! This effects the whole industry through and through.

Im sorry to hear your lost your job my friend!
