However, within just three weeks of training, the four-month-old Jack Russell can sit, stay and walk, by responding to hand gestures.
The pet has learned a vocabulary of different commands including, sit, stop, lie down, roll over, come back and walk on.
Staff at the Dogs Trust Salisbury in Newton Tony, Wilts, hope that they will now be able to find Snowy a home because of her newly-acquired obedience.

Dogs naturally live in a pack with leaders that are very cruel if they don't obey. I am NOT advocating cruelty but I have 2 Akitas, over 100lbs each. We started early with gently taking away chewies, and giving them back to establish the Pack Leader status.Ichiban even now if he as a treat will put both paws over it and look around like, don't try it!
Our 15 mo female was a handful! She came in the house the first time like "I own everything"...and was getting into fights with my beloved senior Ichiban. So we daily put her in the submissive position (belly up) and she fought and bit like a tiger. We were consistent, the fights stopped (Ichiban could have taken her head off if he weren't the Gentle Giant). She is now happy allowing him to be above her and Knows WE are the pack leaders.
She now has glaucoma which blinded her within 2 weeks and I am using sounds/clicks that she learned to follow quickly. And, of course she understands most words like "time to eat", lol.I could never turn in a dog with a disability. She has a forever home.

While cute, this is truly unremarkable.
Most dog trainers (positive reinforcement good trainers, not that ceser millan bullshit on tv) will use hand signal training, and petsmarts dog training centers (surprisingly very good, at least in my town) teaches via hand signals.
in fact, the only thing interesting here is that the dog learned it and was ALREADY deaf. Which is somewhat of an accomplishment on the dogs part.

i don't think it's anything spectacular, but i do think it's interesting that people will deny that animals have a capacity for language when all language is is learned signal communication. and of course animals have their own systems of communication, the signals for which are incomprehensible for humans.

Your absolutely right. Despite their less than perfect eyesight, dogs learn very well via hand gestures. It's best to train primarily train your dog via hand gestures. Once the dog responds 100% of the time to the hand gestures, one can start adding voice commands!
I trained a former stray like this and he did beautifully!! - 3 years ago

I don't like the fact that typically (unless he has changed past his shows that used to be on) he would always demean the dogs he was working with, acting negatively to them and "putting them in their place". Honestly for an animal you want to be a friend and companion to the last thing should be punishment and ruling over them.

My dog knows sign language and she isn't even deaf. Lol, she tends to pay more attention to me if I use hand signals instead of voice commands.
