Gaza: Retrospective of events
1948 Arab-Israeli War - Gaza Strip’s boundaries were defined by the 1949 Armistice and placed under Egyptian rule to be held in trust for a future Palestinian state.
1956 Suez-Sinai War - The Gaza Strip was occupied by Israel. A year later they withdrew their troops and a UN Emergency Force was placed in the Gaza Strip.
1967 War - Israel recaptured the Gaza Strip on June 5th. In November of the same year, UN Security Council called for the ‘withdrawal of Israeli armed forces from territories occupied in the recent conflict’.
1970 - The first settlement, Kfar Darom, was built in the Gaza Strip. The Israeli settlement movement continued to expand as did confrontations between settlers and Palestinians.
1987 - The first Palestinian Intifada and Hamas, an Islamic Resistance Movement, begin in Gaza. The Intifada comes to an end with the signing of the Oslo Accord and establishment of the PA in 1993.
2000 - The Camp David Summit renewed hopes for peace until Ariel Sharon’s visit to the al-Aqsa Mosque sparks the Second Intifada in September.
2005 –Ariel Sharon ‘disengages’ from the Gaza Strip in September – unilaterally and without consultation or coordination with the the Palestinian Authority. Though the settlers are gone, Israel maintains effective contol of the Strip.
2006 – Hamas wins the January Parliamentary Election by a landslide. Israel and the international community place sanctions on Palestine and withhold VAT. Tensions grow within Palestine between factions.
2007 -Violent clashes erupt between Fatah and Hamas in Gaza, resulting in Hamas securing control of the Strip. Egypt responds by sealing off the border.
2008 - On January 17th Israel sealed off the borders to Gaza following a rise in rocket attacks. They retain full control over the amount of medical supplies, food and fuel imported to the Gaza Strip by land or sea. In June 19th, Israel and Hamas agreed to a ceasefire. As this goes to print, they are fighting again (Nov).

Israel stole Gaza by waging a land grab war. No jew gives up anything.....they got the Peace Accord signed by President Sadat for giving back the Sinai.....and Egypt paid them for the buildings in Sharm El Sheikh...............they gave away nothing for nothing.
If the Arabs stood together there would be peace now.....and Israel would be the one looking for peace instead of looking for war as they are.
Israel is in breach of so many UN. Resolutions....they were supposed to go back to their 1969 borders but have ignored the ruling.
Isreal lies about history and does not allow journalists into Gaza........Israel is trying to break the Palestinian people and their OPERATION CAST IRON has been starving the Palestinians for years.
Israel was not helpful to the Sinai Bedouin in the 15 years it ruled Sinai.......and right now they are discriminated against by the Egyptians too.
Israel only taught the Bedouin how to speak Hebrew (they had to) and did not irrigate their land or anything. No good coming from Israel.
Explain the ''Berlin'' Wall you have built to hold the PALESTINIANS hostage?
Explain why you killed so many women and children in all your wars?
Explain why you don;t allow Palestinians access to water?
Explain why Palestinians are short of food?Explain why you have uprooted their olive trees and lemon groves?
Explain why you treat them as second class citizens?
Explain why you refused them medical aid....going so far as to apprehend Red Cross ambulances?

This is what Highroller wrote, "Before Israel , there was ,anyhow, Peace"
I have a secret for Highroller, before Israel there was this thing called World War II and you might noit believe it, but that was not a peaceful time. Oh and before that there was this other thing called, World War I and before that there were more than 160 wars.
Guess what? Those wars were ALL without Israel and they were not too peaceful. The next "Gaza" retaliation by Israel against the believers in hate and murder and rape, will take place in this little place called Iran.

The group’s 37-page report, released April 2, cites extensive evidence that Israeli soldiers committed “significant violations” of international law. They include the deliberate targeting of civilians and civilian infrastructure, the intentional denial of medical care to the wounded, willful attacks on civilian medical workers and the misuse of weapons, including some manufactured and supplied by the United States.
IDF soldiers who served in the Gaza conflict have since come forward to corroborate some of those allegations, and have claimed that Israel’s own investigations of such incidents rarely, if ever, result in disciplinary action or reforms.
“What these soldiers acknowledged, and what we saw on the ground, was that this was a widespread policy,” Leas said. “These were rules of engagement that favored shooting, bombing and killing civilians.”
Israel’s consul general to New England, Nadav Tamir, declined to comment further on the NLG report or the Shurrab family shooting. (Leahy’s office has yet to receive an official response from the Israeli government.) However, the consulate issued written remarks about some of the ethical challenges of fighting an unconventional war - 2 years ago

Nataraja,
The fact of the matter is that Israel's permanent survival depends on a peace settlement. It has every right to demand that there be iron-clad security details and that the terrorist structures that exist be dismantled. It, also, has every right to demand that that alliances be in place to make sure that it can never be threatened militarily and that the terrorists be severely dealt with whenever they act.
Having said all of that, the original peace plan put forward by Prime Minister Ehud Barack and President Bill Clinton is still the only real game in town. Under it, Israel indeed would have to give up about 95% of the West Bank, giving Palestine some Israeli desert land in turn and give East Jerusalem to the Palestinians. That's just the reality of the situation.
On their part, the Palestinians will have to give up the nonsense that any large number of them will ever return to Israel. Furthermore, they will have to accept Israel's right to exist and allow for arrangements to insure its security.
So, both sides will have to sacrifice. However, that is the only deal that will work and last. Fanatics on both sides will hate it, as they always hate any peace settlement. Yet, when it eventually happens, there will be a great many ordinary Israelis and Palestinians, who just want to live normal lives, who will welcome it.

Excellent and factual comment by Akamaial!
That is so true. No matter what the complaint is, the first words they respond with are, "Other religions kill too," as if Islam is just smiply one more religion in a long list of murderers.
I believe that many quiet Moslems are non violent and do not agree with all the murders and rapes, but they are intimidated and scared to death of the violent ones. I hope the day comes soon when those silent ones stand up and speak loudly against all the bombings, killings, rapes, and beheadings. Yes, I do hope they will respond to all the murder committed by their fellow Moslems and they can not get away with it by simply saying, "Those people who do all these killings are not Moslems," because they are Moslems and the imams know it and they should teach peace, not anger and violence and death. The imams should be leaders of peace. - 2 years ago

The Muslim Game:~~“Other religions kill, too.”
~Bringing other religions down to the level of Islam is one of the most popular strategies of Muslim apologists when confronted with the spectacle of Islamic violence. Remember Timothy McVeigh, the Oklahoma City bomber? Why pick on Islam if other religions have the same problems?
~The Truth:~~ Because they don’t.
~Regardless of what his birth certificate may or may not have said, Timothy McVeigh was not a religious man (in fact, he was an atheist). At no time did he credit his deeds to religion, quote Bible verses, or claim that he killed for God.
~The so-called “members of other faiths” alluded to by Muslims are nearly always just nominal members who have no active involvement. They are neither inspired by, nor do they credit religion as Muslim terrorists do, and this is what makes it a very different matter.
~Islam is associated with Islamic terrorism because that is the association that the terrorists themselves choose to make.
~Muslims who compare crime committed by people who happen to be nominal members of other religions to religious terror committed explicitly in the name of Islam are comparing apples to oranges.
~Yes, some of the abortion clinic bombers were religious (as Muslims enjoy pointing out), but consider the scope of the problem. There were five deadly attacks over a 35 year period in the U.S. Seven people died. This is an average of one death every five years.
~By contrast, Islamic terrorists staged nearly TEN THOUSAND deadly attacks in just the six years following September 11th, 2001. If one goes back to 1971, when Muslim armies in Bangladesh began the mass slaughter of Hindus, through the years of Jihad in the Sudan, Kashmir and Algeria, and the present-day Sunni-Shia violence in Iraq, the number of innocents killed in the name of Islam probably exceeds five million over this same period.
~In the last six years, there have been perhaps a dozen or so religiously-inspired killings by people of all other faiths combined. No other religion produces the killing sprees that Islam does nearly every day of the year. Neither do they have verses in their holy texts that arguably support it. Nor do they have large groups across the globe dedicated to the mass murder of people who worship a different god, as the broader community of believers struggles with ambivalence and a radical clergy that supports the terror.
~Muslims may like to pretend that other religions are just as subject to "misinterpretation" as is their “perfect” one, but the reality speaks of something far worse. - 2 years ago

Interesting how you cal it a terrorist state when they only cause terror to bother those who have bothered them for 1,420 years. Yet, you completely ignore the real terrorists who continue daily to murder people in more than 103 countries so far, all under the scream of "ala akbar." Somehow you have nothing negative to say about that. I think many of us know why you only choose to call Israel "terrorists."

Israel is the one recieving the money......$3billion of American taxpayers money annually that they then spend on military equipment and illegally building on Palestinian land.......then known as ''settlements''. Because AIPAC controls American congressmen they get this money to spend how they wish. The latest is that two AIPAC members caught spying on America got let off the hook.
The public is learning despite your hold on the media. The game is nearly up.The TRUTH is nearly out.
Long Live REAL America.....not the America of Bush and AIPAC.

HeilHitler, oh, excuse me, I mean Highroller is at it again.
It's fine to hate Jews and the Israelis and the Zionists, as long as no one dares hate the Moslems. Because, they are permitted to hate and rape and kill and torture because they have permission from Ala because Mohamed told the Moslems that Ala told him that they should hate and kill. Therefore, because the koran does not give permission to hate or kill Moslems, therefore, it not allowed. Only the Moslems can kill, but the Jews are not allowed. DOn't you see? Mohamed said that Ala said so. So, it must all be true. Would Mohamed dare put in his own feeelings and desires in the kora? of course not. Also, Mohamed did not decide that when the killers go to heaven they each get 72 vigin sixteen year old girls, no Mohamed didn't make that up. Ala is the one who made that up because Ala just could not think of anything more meaningful than to reward his faithful killers with sex with teenagers. That's what Ala said according to Mohamed who wrote down what Ala said to him in his ear. - 2 years ago

Following are some facts sent to me by a friend well versed in the Israeli/Palistinian conflict:
Israel was voted in to be country by the United Nations in 1848. Now, let’s see what the Muslems did about Israel LONG, LONG before 1948, when there was no “Palesine” excuse. These same haters of Israel only because of 1948, somehow killed 6,000 Jews and Christians massacred in Fez in 1033; hundreds of Jews slaughtered in Muslim Cordoba between 1010 and 1015; 4,000 Jews and Christians killed in Muslim riots in Grenada in 1066, wiping out two entire communities; the Berber Muslim Almohad depredations of Jews and Christians in Spain and North Africa between 1130 and 1232, which killed tens of thousands, while forcibly converting thousands of Christians , and subjecting the forced Christian and Jewish converts to Islam to a Muslim Inquisition; the 1291 pogroms in Baghdad and its environs, which killed at least hundreds of Jews; the 1465 pogrom against the Jews of Fez; the late 15th century pogrom against the Jews of the Southern Moroccan oasis town of Touat; the 1679 pogroms against, and then expulsion of 10,000 Jews from Sanaa, Yemen to the unlivable, hot and dry Plain of Tihama, from which only 1,000 returned alive, in 1680, 90% having died from exposure; recurring Muslim anti-Jewish violence-including pogroms and forced conversions-throughout the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries, which rendered areas of Iran (for example, Tabriz) Judenrein; the 1834 pogrom in Safed where raging Muslim mobs killed and grievously wounded hundreds of Jews; the 1888 massacres of Jews in Isfahan and Shiraz, Iran; the 1910 pogrom in Shiraz; the pillage and destruction of the Casablanca, Morocco ghetto in 1907; the pillage of the ghetto of Fez Morocco in 1912; the government sanctioned anti-Jewish pogroms by Muslims in Turkish Eastern Thrace during June-July, 1934 which ethnically cleansed at least 3000 Jews; and the series of pogroms, expropriations, and finally mass expulsions of some 900,000 Jews from Arab Muslim nations, beginning in 1941 in Baghdad (the murderous “Farhud,” during which 600 Jews were murdered, and at least 12,000 pillaged )-eventually involving cities and towns in Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Syria, Aden, Bahrain, and culminating in 1967 in Tunisia-that accompanied the planning and creation of a Jewish state, Israel, on a portion of the Jews’ ancestral home.
All you just read happened with no 1967 war, and no land grab by Israelis. In fact, everything you just read happened before the United Nations voted for Israel to be a country!!! So what was their Palestine claim about then, so many, many years and so many, many times before Israel was a country?

Connecting Gaza and the West
One of the most complex aspects of the peace process has always concerned the necessity for a link between the West Bank and Gaza Strip. A series of proposals and ideas have been floated. One suggesting a land corridor be-tween the two which would be ‘bought’ in landswaps with Israel coming from the West Bank; another a bridge; and still another suggests building a tunnel. The geographical complexities of the issue have kept negotiators and their advisors up at night.
What has kept the rest of us awake is the way in which the Gaza and the West Bank can be reunited politically and socially following the tragic schism of 2007. While the PA was at work preparing itself for negotiations on the geographic complexities, it quickly became clear that moving forward in the peace process with Israel hinged upon prior national reconciliation and the formation a national unity government.
Sporadically throughout 2008, attempts were made to bring the two major factions together, but it was not until the closing months of the year (as this goes to print) that there appeared to be any sort of breakthrough.
Reconciliation will not however make negotiations any easier. In fact, allow-ing Hamas any say in the process might cause Israel to reject them on the premise that the party are neither part of the PLO nor credible partners for peace.
Because of these conflicting realities, 2009 promises to be a very delicate year. The PLO and PA are now clinging to an emergency mandate that began in 2007. The legitimacy of the emergency government has been questioned throughout, but maintains its hold on power through the promise of being able to make tangible improvements in people’s lives by moving towards a negotiatied two-state settlement.
The inability to do so will increase support for Hamas. Furthermore, not co-opting Hamas into the process gives them immense power to disrupt prog-ress. Meanwhile the people of the West Bank and Gaza Strip drift further and further apart.

The Constant Crisis in Gaza
The Gaza Strip has been facing a humanitarian crisis ever since April of 2006, when border closings and the lack of foreign aid caused a severe shortage of fuel, foods and medical care. Gazans suffer shortages of essen-tial commodities and the rise in market prices has made it difficult for families to have an adequate, healthy and balanced diet.
The Karni crossing, which serves as the main conduit for commercial goods into Gaza, has been closed since June 13th, 2007. This has devastated the Gazan economy. ”In June 2007, there were 748 truckloads of ex-ports leaving Gaza for Israel and other countries. A month later there were none”.
In Gaza over 80% of Palestinians are now depending on foreign aid compared to 63% of 2006. Unem-ployment in Gaza is close to 40% and is set to rise to 50%. The private sector – that generates 53% of all jobs in Gaza is crumbling.
The health sector remains unstable as the severe lack of fuel causes power cuts. According to the July 2007,UNRWA Gaza Situation Report, primary and secondary health care facilities are still functioning de-spite shortages of electricity and supplies such as X-ray film, laboratory kits, patient beds and examination tables. However there are ongoing shortages of chronic disease drugs and anaesthetics, and a considerable portion of equipment and machines are out of order, overloading the remaining capacity of hospitals.
WHO reports that at least 51 people have died from October 2007-July 2008 as a direct result of not being able to access medical care outside Gaza – among these were 11 children.
The fuel shortage and the lack of spare parts required to repair and upgrade Gaza’s wastewater treatment plants have forced the Coastal Municipalities Water Utility to continue dumping approximately 84,000 m3 of raw and partially treated sewage into the Mediterranean Sea each day.
