Hapless bystanders on one Taiwanese street were soaked in blood, guts and assorted sperm whale pieces as the poor creature - which had died on a beach - exploded whilst en route to a research facility.
According to Weird Asia News (my number one source for Asian related weirdness):
"Despite the mammal’s grisly explosion, enough of the whale remained for it to be researched by marine biologists."

idealist is correct.
the stomache and gut start to digest the body giving out a range of gasses, damaged or brused flesh does this faster. the way the whale was moved damaged the join on the tail on the under side, thinning the skin.
all this combined with the heat and deleyed progress to the lab (had to wait on land over night) caused such a great build up of gasses that it burst.due to bad translation a range of stories came out just after this in the british and american media about "whales of mass destruction" and "terrorists use exploding whale"
