Lizzie Velasquez weighs only 56 pounds, has almost zero percent body and consumes up to 8,000 calories a day, but she can hardly gain a pound!
Doctors say the 21-year-old student suffers from a bizarre condition that prevents her from gaining weight. She needs to consume at least 60 meals a day to maintain her health.
“I eat every 15-20 minutes to keep my energy levels up,” she told reporters. “I eat small portions of crisps, sweets, chocolate, pizza, chicken, cake, doughnuts, ice cream, noodles and pop tarts all day long, so I get pretty upset when people accuse me of being anorexic.”
Lizzie’s condition baffled doctors since her birth at four weeks premature and weighed only 2lbs 10 oz. “They told us she would never be able to walk, talk or have a normal life,” her mother recalls. “We had to buy dolls’ clothes from the toy store because baby clothes were too big.”
A medical team at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas believe Lizzie suffers from a form of Neonatal Progeroid Syndrome (NPS) which causes rapid aging, fat loss and tissue degeneration.
She’s suffered several health woes in her 21 years, including going blind in one eye, a ruptured appendix and severe anemia. Doctors are unsure how long she’ll live.
