Village Bicycle Project

antmarshall
Village Bicycle Project came about in response to a critical lack of basic, reliable, affordable transport for millions of Africans.
VBP partners with Bikes Not Bombs to ship bicycles to Ghana, Africa. A majority of these bikes will be sold to pay for shipping costs while a percentage of the best bikes will go to rural villages where transportation is lacking or non-existent.
When mobility is improved so is the standard of living.

    • I was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Ghana 07-09 and I lived in a rural village in the North. We hosted the Village Bicycle Project and the people loved it. They said it was one of the best things "I did." (We also made a movie on Urban Migration & HIV/AIDS and toured it to 20 villages around.)

I hosted two guys from Accra who brought 40 bikes to people in the village who "ordered" them. They paid half price what they normally would. The guys did a training for 2 days about the bike for the people who ordered them (required!) and left behind some helpful tools for the local bike mechanic.

The biggest problem we had was one woman didn't like her bike (they are all different, but she got her money back after returning it) and the "other bike mechanic" in the village was jealous of the one selected to get the tools. Ooops.

Thank you! Keep growing and going!
