Think Again: Drugs

A couple years back Foreign Policy magazine caused quite a stir in the Latino community by publishing an article entitled: The Hispanic Challenge by co-founder and Harvard professor Samuel P. Huntington.
This time around they have printed a pretty engaging article on a taboo subject that will very likely grab a couple of headlines here and there.
Having grown up in a country stigmatized by the production of narcotics, it makes me glad that this type of discourse is being brought to the coffee tables of influential policy makers and think tanks around the country. But, I doubt anything will come out of it until the public at large gets involved in this long overdue debate.

    • The "just want to get high" syndrome is an expression of individuals who want to relieve stress. And stress relief is a valid use of this drug. Otherwise there would be no stress-relief pharmaceuticals. The fact that 60 Minutes played the "just want to get high" card so heavily as if there is an issue with that infuriated me.

Given that there is no increase of issues in society (California) with essentially legal marijuana, people relieving stress should not be justification to imprison and harass our citizens.

    • The Foreign Policy piece you linked to was a really interesting article. The author's credit is at the bottom of the first screen, but there is more, so be sure to click next.
60 Minutes just did a segment on medical marijuana in California. I covered a bunch of medical marijuana cases when I was in radio, and I know a friend at Current who was helped enormously by using cannabis. I think it's a shame when people abuse the system and jeopardize the access for people who are actually helped by pot, but if the FP article is right, it would be legal, and then those who need it wouldn't be hurt by those who want it also having some.
