Thank you internet! For every who refuses to agree with the scientific community...and wants to make their own arguments here is a little resource to refute all the things you may have read on some crazy denial blog.
Do those who claim this honestly think it absolves them from any responsibility due to the effects of climate change? I would really like to know that, because the effects are already here. I will be sure to elaborate on that later.
Am I asking anyone to accept spin from the US? Far from it.
All I ask is that people learn about the individuals and special interests who are trying to hijack the issue.
Be careful not to confuse climatology with meteorology. Climate change does NOT equal extreme weather events. There will only ever be a correlation between the two, no matter how strong. However, changes in rainfall and overall winter temperatures are climate change. But extreme weather events are just that, weather.
I find it hard to accept comments and spin "science" from a country that, besides from being the world's worst polluter and policeman, refuses to sign the Kyoto Protocol.
It is climate change because of extreme weather events. Although the average temperature throughout the year is increasing, winters are getting colder and we have more rainfall, cyclones, tornadoes, draughts, floods and other extreme weather events. Hence CC and not GW...
Climate change, not global warming, people. And we are destroying our planet.
We create more waste in a year that the Earth can compost in a thousand years. And all our landfills are reaching the limit, so now we go and pollute the so called "thirld world" countries. Except that the Earth is finite and at this rate even them will be full of waste in 20 years...
Of course there's no way of trying to convince people not to use their Hummers and save energy, so we march happily towards extinction!
It's inevitable that someone will say global warming is natural - although not very well articulated here. It usually comes between arguing that global warming is not happening and that global warming is good (CO2 makes plants happy).
Gristmill has an excellent "How to Talk to a Climate Skeptic" series. Check out #3: "Climate Change is natural."
Even if the current global warming is natural, does that mean we should not do anything? If an asteroid was going to collide with our planet, should we just sit back and say, "Well, it was nice while it lasted?" NO! We would send Bruce Willis to blow it up.
But this round of global warming is unnatural. Every year the scientific consensus grows and the number of skeptics shrink. Humans are causing it and it is going to suck, BIG TIME.
We have the technology to solve it sitting on the shelf. All that stands in our way are the so-called skeptics, the fossil fuel lobby, and an inept Congress.
Yep global warming is no big deal. Most of the Earth's history didn't have ice caps or cars or people or computers or scientists or speak n' spells or macoroni and cheese or Miami. All things that I will miss when global warming gets rid of them for me.
Yes the earth has cycles, but all planets and environments have their limits and breaking points. Most don't seem to realize how delicate a balance it is for life to pop up on this planet.
Once we hit the 6 billion mark in population and everyone decided to drive cars, use (insert ridiculous number here) kilowatts of electricity everyday, and dump (insert even more ridiculous number here) tons of waste into the worlds water supplies every day then it is almost impossible for an environment to adapt fast enough to compensate.
Then again maybe I'm just nuts so keep on polluting to your heart's content.
