Fake Turf Being Watered as Water Supply Runs Low

It's not even real grass.

But in the midst of what may be the worst drought ever in North Carolina, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are watering the synthetic turfs used by their field hockey teams.

The International Hockey Federation insists.

The universities are not breaking any rules. But like clockwork, as residents in Durham and Chapel Hill see their plants and lawns wither, the sprinklers go on at the UNC-CH Francis E. Henry Stadium and at Duke's Williams Field.

Brad Schnurr, a Chapel Hill contractor who does work in Durham, saw the sprinklers go on one afternoon recently at Duke and drove around the block to make sure he was not seeing things.

"Sprinklers aren't even the right term, they're like fire hoses," Schnurr said. "I was like, 'What is that? What is that?' I couldn't believe it."

    • I don't care if it "isn't wrong" but in the midst of the drought, we need to ALL conserve the water. "Waste not, Want not"! Maybe I just don't understand, but it isn't even real grass!!

    • This is a tough call. I definitely don't think an unthinking "Woo, go field hockey!" is the right response, but you don't want to deny athletes the right to play their sport safely. Luckily, we're getting some rain this week, but if the drought situation were to get worse, I think that unfortunately the universities might need to rethink their priorities regardless of how important the sport might be for a select few.

    • Wow...that's pretty wrong. Maybe they aren't "breaking any rules" but jesus christ people! That doesn't mean it isn't wrong! Stupid crap like this just pisses me off!
