"About 30% of the world's reefs have been destroyed in my lifetime," says the 43-year-old Mr. Barber. If current conditions continue, as many as 70% of the world's reefs could disappear within 50 years, according to NOAA.

    • The disappearing reefs are a big problem. In some real sense the oceans are what allows us to thrive on this planet. It's sensitive, that's why a small change in ocean temperatures can have drastic consequences for ocean life and, in turn, all life on this planet. I don't really care for fish myself, but I want my grandkids to have the option. It's too bad some feel the ocean is a bottomless pit for garbage, effluence and toxic waste in general. It's not coincidence that many factories are on rivers, after all, what better way to get rid of their waste. "Out of site out of mind" has gotten out of control.
