A new mathematical model of the balance between pathogens and the immune system shows how a critically ill person can be cured by boosting their immune system. But it also predicts that the same critically ill person can be killed by reducing the pathogenic load on the immune system. That means sterile hospitals could be just as bad as dirty ones
