"erring on the side of caution could also mean designing the cleanest, safest coal and nuclear plants and drilling for oil offshore in the cleanest, safest, most ecologically-friendly ways.......... " WTF? Talk about spin. Look, you're taking one thing, "erring on the side of caution" and turning it into an argument for more of same. Get a clue. You're a tool of this industry, unwittingly, I'm sure. Quite frankly, I'm sick of being so "comfortable". I don't want to turn on an air conditioner when it's 80 degrees. I don't want to turn on the heater just because it's a little cool. I don't want the earth, the people of the world, and my children to pay the price for my "comfort". How many people will die for your comfort plusaf? Why do you think we're in iraq? Yes, yes, we want to stabilize the region. We want to bring DEMOCRACY! and Capitalism! We want to turn the middle east into a territory of the united states. All in the name of oil to fuel our "comfort". F**K that. Over a million people have died. Have they no right to the comfort of life? It goes way beyond that. Look around your house. All that crap was made somewhere by someone. That someone was probably paid SH*T and treated really, really, really poorly. Yeah I know what you'll say, a crappy job is better than no job. I used to say that too. That was before I was educated on the subject. It's a raw deal, and one day, we'll pay the price. Comfort...what a selfish concept.

plusaf, forgive me for saying so, but I can't really figure out what your point is. It reminds me of 8 years of fights with my recently (thank god) axed boyfriend....You could approach this person with reason, but they will then use your words in a way that is purely antagonistic. I don't see anything but negative energy coming from you in this conversation. I DON'T think it's a good thing for us to kill ourselves off. I DO think if we died off, the earth would stabilize, but do you want that to happen? I would like to see us evolve into smarter entities that are more in tune and in harmony with our environment. Sadly, I don't see it happening without DRASTIC disaster or something else to throw us of course. Would have to be like half of the world's population dying, or nuclear war or something terrible like that. But here's the thing....there will always be some negative, cynical monkey ready to tell us why we don't need to change, and why it won't do us any good. Our representatives in the house and senate prove that to us every day, and plusaf, so do you. It is clearly in the earth's nature to go through warmer and cooler periods. Okay, but, what we are doing now is releasing COPIUS amounts of pollutants into the atmosphere. These pollutants are shown to have an UN-NATURAL effect on the planet, thereby ALTERING the earth's natural cooling/warming cycle/state. We are using our one and only home as a massive science experiment. So whatever "caused" the last ice age or warming period may be interesting and educational, it has nothing to do with the effects of our industries and energy consumption. You can try to spin circles and get people caught up, but that doesn't change anything, it only slows progress. Get on board.

so plusaf you are saying if you cannot quantify your reduction it is irrelevant? that small changes added up are not large changes? oh yeah and in case you missed it...
NO NEW COAL!!!!!
cleanest, safest? c'mon thats as laughable as carbon credits. and nuclear...
sounds great for the short term.
i mean why worry about the future.

It's okay Cosmo. Everything is not fine, All the bad stuff won't go away unless we make it go away. But, if we work harder and smarter than them we can do it. If you are having any fun whatever you do don't change your habits. Just get a little mean and be ready to fight.

plusaf "Marilynn, i was starting to miss you." Thanks, I was busy elsewhere doing constructive things. One person even removed his Ron Paul rants after I refuted what he claimed about that nut case. One lamer at a time. Now about you plusaf ...... have you been here all that time? It's okay to leave. There is no edge you won't fall off.

Some of you have got some really tremendous egos. I'm sorry, but a fancy education is not necessarily an indication of intelligence. Please refer to your notes on DUBYA. Some of you are suffering from a complex usually seen in teens and young adults. it's a superman thing... NOTHING can get to us right? Very presumptive. The more I learn, the more I know that I know NOTHING. We can speculate and argue, but the bottom line is that THERE IS A LOT AT STAKE. Even if you are right, and global warming is a "hoax?", we should err on the side of caution. Don't you think that's the SMART thing to do? In any case, we are running out of oil, so we need to switch gears ANYWAY so we can avoid that PARTICULAR man-made armageddon. All of your snotty little retorts will do nothing to save the billions of lives that are at stake here. Think about it, then ERR ON THE SIDE OF CAUTION....

carugoman I just wanted to preemptively say "took initiative in creating" is not the same as inventing when a politician says it. It means that he wrote or sponsored the legislation that allowed and paid for something. Just because you didn't meet Al Gore while the internet was being invented doesn't mean he didn't contribute any more than the fact that you never met President Eisenhower doesn't mean he didn't take the initiative in creating the American highway system.
But you had a real question, or at least you posed it like you actually might want to know the answer. The mass that got into the air comes from carbon locked up in the ground in various forms. Find out about the carbon cycle from Wikipedia or How Things Work or someplace. That describes what happens without human intervention. Some of the carbon in life forms turns into coal, oil or natural gas. Over a few million years this amounts to quite a pile of carbon. But there it stayed, locked in the ground, where it doesn't mess with the atmosphere too much. That is until the last couple hundred years. All of the this mass we are talking about used to be in the ground and we freed it from the ground and then burned it so it would be gaseous and able to float off into the air, where it is causing some problems.

"...THE inventor of the internet...Al Gore..." -- Funny how only the right-wing claims that Al Gore said that he had invented the internet, when he said no such thing at all. What Al Gore actually said was "...I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system." That's not only an accurate and true statement, that's also very different from "invented the internet". Yet the right-wingers persist in their psittacine reiterations of a lie without bothering to find out what Al Gore actually said. But then, that same mentality will take the "Left Behind" series of badly-written millenarist believers-exploiting pap for Gospel truth!

see carugoman the problem keeps cropping up. someone (you) shows up tries to end intellectual (if i may be so bold) conversation between concerned peers and starts calling names and slandering people. do you think that your emotionally charged responses make you sound mature and even coherent? (like im one to talk lol) how about, if you are privy to this inside research scoop list ,you hit the make current button and share it with others? instead of casting stones and attempting to dominate others ideas through grade school bully tactics? just a thought.

What is the problem here, REALLY?
Are people afraid to admit that the course of humanity is detrimental to its source, planet Earth?
Let's be philosophical for a second: there is no right and wrong. There is only life and death. We are on a path towards species-death, because we are not living in harmony with our source.
EARTH = SOURCE = GOD.
Now that we know this, can we ask God forgiveness and live in harmony?

This swindle has been discredited more often than necessary to know that it's full of shit.
And I know that because I did my research.
Unlike you.@carugoman
Repeating media hypes like that stuff about Gore and the Internet makes you look like a fool. Can't you think for yourself?
" If politics are to be set aside, why do liberals only speak of partisan political issues and only from the slant of the "official Party dogma?" "
They don't. This was an ignorant statement.
If anything it's more difficult to unite liberals unite conservatives behind a leader, i.e "an offical party dogma". The Democratic party is notoriously divided into various interest groups, all with their own pet issues."Now who was it that has 'invented' this "global-warming" scam? Why it was...Al Gore!!! I'm sure glad we have a politician as smart as Al Gore to trust and believe in? Or was it Al Franken? I"
Do you know anything at all?
Someone who confuses Al Gore with Al Franken needs to spend a few years in school. Or at least wear glasses. - 4 years ago

carugoman "THE inventor of the Internet..." Al Gore was a supporter and advocate of the Internet long before it ever was. Gee, I didn't realize how important you are. He probably doesn't either so he didn't come around and rub elbows. Yes, Stupid Liberals is your term. I'll put my Stupid Liberal values up against your Neo Con Republican values any day.

MM, By which "Stupid Liberals"[your terms ,not mine] are you referring to? Who really created THIS problem? On a personal note,as a grad student (major-EEE) from MIT, while spending over three years designing then developing a DARPA funded project in central NY state...I never once had the chance to "rub elbows" with THE inventor of the internet...Al Gore. Not once did I get the opportunity, must've happened while I was passed out from all those slide rule calculations that I had to do? Now who was it that has 'invented' this "global-warming" scam? Why it was...Al Gore!!! I'm sure glad we have a politician as smart as Al Gore to trust and believe in? Or was it Al Franken? I get my "Stupid Liberals" all mixed up these days and it's hard to distinguish individual characteristics.

wow!!! I am amazed at the stupidity of what passes for liberalism, as it exists, in the world, currently Hidden amongst hyperbole and "double-speak", are the many complexities of verbiage; all the while trying to maintain a sense of reality mistaken as veracity of an ideal. So does anyone understand any of this? Not really, once you really think about it.
Thinking deeply on the subject of "Global Warming." one sticky question that never seems to get answered, to any degree of satisfaction (subjectively,) is, where does all the mass go to/ come from? Has this mass suddenly appeared from outer space? Has this caused humans to use this newly found mass to "create" all this destruction and pollution? I was always taught that "mass can be neither created nor destroyed!"
Are we to believe that this was all because of the"industrial" revolution of the past 165+ years? The "evil" empire...the BUSH administration...Reagan administration...Ford...Nixon...Eisenhower(I must be getting old if I can remember back that far?) Curious but why aren't the Democrats held accountable for all the crap that happens during their tenure(s)?
If politics are to be set aside, why do liberals only speak of partisan political issues and only from the slant of the "official Party dogma?" Anyone that expresses an alternate view to what is commonly referred to as THE TRUTH is slammed by those that only know what they have been told by others or what is referred to as "the Slime oozing from your TV set!" [Frank Zappa;author]
I do, however, agree with 'maryeberle' on one salient point: STOP WAR The price is too high and once the war drum is silenced, the price of war will continue to be too high a price that no one wants to pay it and the people along with their government, looks for the cheapo way out of 'paying the bill!' I'm not whining but after nearly 17 years, my left leg still hasn't grown back. I digress and have opined excessively. - 4 years ago

in the world of global greed you cant be too careful about information and blind belief i understand. yes ice recedes and advances yes all this is certainly in norm yes chaotic change is the standard on our beloved planet but doing a bit of digging and we see rapidly accelerated "natural cycles" and a disproportionate amount of co2 in the air.( when viewed historically) we know in our generation the fish have gotten detectable levels of certain tested contaminates ( what of untested or looked for ones?), the ground water has become not only unsafe for swimming but even for drinking at times even polluted to the watershed..., we know that the barrier reef is in danger, and that the worlds forests are rapidly falling to corporate greed.., the evidence is mounting for immediate action. it's true it may be hyped by this agenda or that but can we ignore the elephant in the room just because it couldnt be here? we know that at current rates of change based on our best world weather and geo- emulation software that we are looking at acute temp. gains in the next 100 yrs. if there is some possibility of us slowing or reversing these trends does it really matter what the powermongers think they are accomplishing? does it matter if they think themselves clever or if they make another trillion of imaginary unbacked currency before next year? if there is some chance of creating a more sustainable future for our children shouldnt we just unite and set aside politics for safety? p.s. impeach.

You are right AngelinaH, not everyone can buy a hybrid car just because they would like to but there are many ways we as individuals can make a start. Florescent bulbs for example. Plant as many trees as you can around your house and yard. Deciduous trees. So you can benefit from the suns heat in the winter and shade to help cool your house in the summer. Plus the trees help clean the air. Pay attention to the kind of power plants that go in around you. Advocate for solar and wind power. We can't afford nuclear waste and coal power is filthy. We need fast rail service across the country. There are so many things we could be working on.

LOL...This cracks me up! With all due respect mary and supporters, don't you realize that you and those who support your views are using propaganda and totally buying into the views that corporations, and the governments they support, want you to believe? Again, with all due respect, are you serious? Use a little common sense...The world has changed dramatically, in line with our actions, and continues to change in ways that we cannot predict. Yes, ice has melted before, yes, the earth has warmed before, but that's irrelevant. We are to the earth as HIV Is to us. We are a deadly virus, and we have many ways of attacking both our beloved earth, and our own population. How do you see this panning out? Do you think everything is just going to be okay? Does it not concern you that cities, states, and entire countries, could soon be underwater? Don't you realize that there is no way to counteract that? Don't you think it would be prudent to err on the side of caution? Screw the corporations! They can find other ways to be profitable. We don't have to sell our souls and our children's future just to strengthen the economy. Get on board and let's MAKE SMART DECISIONS INSTEAD OF POLARIZING OVER ISSUES and turning everything into a god forsaken debate. ACTION people! Dang, I need a cup of tea to soothe my rising frustration. =)

Have you read this?
Talk about fear, nothing is scarier than the Bush Administration's stance on the environment and special interest groups trying to debunk the theory of man made global warming.
How can you actually think that with the billions of people on this earth, and our mountains of trash and chemicals in the land fills, with our razing of forests and more and more cars and trucks on the highways, . . . that we have in no way affected this planet? That none of the pollution is man made?
