My Final Plea to the Honorable Albert Gore, Jr.

I have been thinking a lot lately about all of our efforts to try to convince you to run for President in 2008. In you book, "The Assualt On Reason", you write about people needed to come together, to make our voices heard, to take back our government so that it is, once again, a government for the people, by the people. In working with draftgore.com, netrootsforgore, gore2008, Americaforgore and all the other websites that are working to get you to run, aren't we doing exactly what you advised us to do in your book?
We are coming together and using our voices - with newspaper ads, tv ads, calls & letters to senators, letters, phone calls and emails to you, working on various campaigns (like the pennies we sent), showing up where you are speaking to hand out "Gore 2008" buttons, gathering signatures - letting our opinions be known on hundreds of websites, here at current.com, on youtube and everywhere we can think of. We all have one common theme - to ask, beg, plea and, sometimes, even demand that you run.
In Time magazine May 16th, 2007, you stated that, "I am under no illusions that any position has as much ability to influence change as the presidency does. If the President made climate change the organizing principle, the filter through which everything else had to flow, then that could really make a huge difference." If you really believe that, why aren't you running? You have trained many others to carry on the climate crisis fight. Shouldn't you help all you can by being our president and helping us lead the world in this fight?
On July 7th you stood before millions of us, asking us to "answer the call" for our planet and we responded by signing the pledge and changing the way we live our lives, working to become carbon neutral - answering your call.
Now, Mr. Gore, isn't it time YOU answered our call?

    • Until Mr. Gore makes a public statement that he will not serve if drafted, I am going to write in his name. If at the primary level. If Hillary and Obama tie and a third ballot is cast, having Gore's name as a write in candidate would put him up for consideration for a third ballot vote. From my reading of "An Assualt On Reason" I think he would like to be drafted because a write in draft would turn American political history on its ear. I think that is what Mr. Gore along with millions of others want; a political revolution. Please pay attention, Mr. Gore. We want you!!!!

    • Well ever if Mr. Gore is not to run for President he has made a mark on all of us and has made a lot of people realize that we all need to change for THE GREATER GOOD. There are many things we can do to help fight global warming. But yes we do need a leader to help drive the change needed. It would be wonderful to have him as President lets hope he makes a move on a campain before we have to deal with this election that I feel is going to be worse the the 2000 and 2004 elections.

    • I am sure by now you have read the statement issued yesterday by California Draft Gore:
"We have recently received a communication from a member of Al Gore's staff discouraging any efforts to put Al Gore's name on the primary ballot," stated Roy Gayhart, organizer for the statewide campaign. "Accordingly, effectively immediately, we have ceased our signature collection and related fund raising activities." I am afraid he has made his decision. He just accepted a partnership with an investment firm in Silicon Valley. I dont think he would accept a new position to turn around and quit a short time later. I dont know who will rise to the occasion to lead our nation out of this mess we find ourselves or IF any one will rise to occasion. The four Senators currently running didnt even vote for the new Atttorney General. How can you lead when you refuse to step up and cast a vote on who the most powerful law enforcement officer in the land shall be? We need a statesmen. When we in our personal lives hurt or wrong another, we apologize. It isnt pleasant but it is the strong, moral and courageous thing to do and we force ourselves to look that person in the eye or pick up the phone and apologize for our wrong. Who will apologize on behalf of our nation for some of the things we have allowed to be done in our names in the past seven years? Future generations will pay dearly for these things and not just monetarily. Revenge is a dish best served cold. How long before the family members and decendents of the those we have tortured and killed decide the time is right for their revenge? We need someone who can address the world and reunite country. I have to believe that Mr. Gore has decided he is not the one to do this for us. Will any of the current candidates in either party or will it just be business as usual? 300 million Americans and this is the best we have to choose from for President? Isnt there anyone who will truly serve the people?

    • Please go to one of the draft Gore sites where you will find instructions and downloadable petitions to get Gore on the ballot---if we build it he will come!

    • I appreciate what you have said. I think I am going to do some research on the commitment that delegates have AFTER the first go-round at the convention. I think they are not committed after that. But I also wonder, if a "new" nominee is drafted at the convention, are the delegates obligated to vote for the candidate they came with (so to speak). If anyone knows, I'd sure love the input/information/education. I guess the one hope is that Mr. Gore has NOT unequivocably said NO WAY. He kinda sorta hedges. He chooses his words carefully. Look, I don't blame him. If he says yes now, he has to be one of seven/eight candidates. Its possible he just doesn't know yet if he wants to run. I respect Mr. Gore for everything he has said and done with respect to Global Warming, the MSM, the war, and this Administration. I would really really like to vote for him, and if I have to, I will write him in on my ballot.

    • He has asked us to trust him and be patient so I guess that is the route I will have to go. It's difficult but I will try to be patient and I DO trust him.

    • I am not sure if one can declare his/her run for the presidency during the convention. The delegates are there to represent the voters of their state. They wouldnt be able to switch their vote to Mr. Gore. I am not an electoral rules scholar though so perhaps your bf is correct. I am a regular listener to The Randi Rhodes Show. Randi had the opportunity to meet VP Gore and Tipper during LIve Earth. She had her listeners read The Assault on Reason and discussed it in length during a week of programs. She has openly expressed her desire for him to enter the race but has said on many occasions if he didnt enter by the primaries, he wouldnt enter at all. My sister sent me an interview with Mr. Gore she found last night. He says he trusts his instincts and that this doesnt seem like the right time for him. Though it is very disappointing to think that he would leave us to a Hillary Clinton presidency, the final decision is his alone. The American people didnt rise up in 2000 and allowed the Supreme Court to choose their leader. The American people still sit and allow their civil liberties to be stripped, the treasury to be robbed and their family members sent off to die in an illegal, immoral war. I would assume that the ones here at this site are politically active but the majority of our countrymen are uninformed and still rely on television to tell them what to think and believe. Hillary Clinton is being sold to the public just as any other product. I fear our country is not and never will be what it was once. Perhaps it is wrong of me to believe that Mr. Gore is the knight in shining armor who will ride in to save America. Perhaps if she is to be saved, it will be up to us instead. If Mr. Gore runs, he has my full support. If he doesnt, I will still respect him for the work he has done. Peace.

    • I'm trying so hard to keep the faith that Al Gore will step up and run for President. Last night my bf (who was a Republican before his party got stolen out from under him) convinced me that Al will run but on his own terms. He says that if Al wants to be the nominee he will not play in any of the primaries (what do they really prove?) and that he will step up at the Convention. If he was Gore's advisor he would tell him to wait until the 7 candidates talk themselves out and the primaries are done before he announces. We all know he could win even at that point. Mr. Gore has 30 yrs experience of running for office and knows how to play the game to get the touchdown. I pray my bf is correct and I am not giving up on Gore. In fact, I had bought a Gore '08 bumpersticker and hadn't put it on my car, but I'm going to now. Right next to my "Bush is Poopy" bumpersticker. We have to have hope people, otherwise, what is left?

    • I understand his need to press on with initiatives for climate change but this will be hard to do if we have this war and another one on the horizon to deal with.

    • I know this feeling well. I remember getting up at 5 am last month to hear about the Nobel. I was so proud. I guess there is just so much we can do. I hope someone will emerge from the pack as a leader. I just don't see that happening yet.

    • I have to admit I am feeling a bit disappointed today as well. I saw a link to a story during my lunch hour. Though I didnt read the article, the teaser was that the democratic party of my home state contacted Mr. Gore and asked if he would be on the primary ballot. His answer was no. I couldnt bring myself to click on the story. I have been hoping he would run since the debacle of 2000. When I read "The Assault on Reason", I thought this would be his campaign platform. When I heard Melissa Etheridge sing the words...."truth is of the people, for the people, by the people", I imagined this would be his campaign song. I waited for the Oscars. I waited for Live Earth. I waited for the Emmys. I waited for the Nobel Peace Prize. I have even been waiting for 30 Rock this week and I dont even watch tv. I feel like a 43 year old groupie! I just believe that Al Gore is the only one that can change the direction of our country. If it isnt what he wants though, I guess I'll have to respectfully walk away. I cant see myself casting a vote for any of the ones currently running though. Thanks to all the ones who post here. It has been very therapeutic. Peace!

    • Oh, yes. We are all starting to actually lose faith here.
Al Gore is turning into that girl that calls you up at 2 AM and then after the fun decides to tell you it's time to break up. Then she calls you again.

The time has come for Al Gore to make his move.

    • I like this. Very much. I couldn't agree more. "The question before us could be of no greater moment; will we continue to live as a people under the rule of law as embodied in our Constitution? Or will we fail future generations by leaving them a Constitution far diminished from the charter of liberty we have inherited from our forebears? Our choice is clear."
Yes, as you said Mr. Gore, our choice is clear. Thank you for those words. We need your help. We will all work to bring about the change needed to keep us from falling under dictatorship. We need a leader.

JoQ...don't give up. Maybe just take a day off and do something just for you. Sounds like you need it. Thank you for all you are doing. I am sure you have inspired many others.
