Giant Kite pulls along a Freight Ship

This is amazing! A company called Sky Sails makes kites the size of football fields to pull along huge boats. This one kite sail can reduce fuel consumption by 50%! As well as this the boat gets to be the envy of all the other boats in the ocean since it has a great big kite to be jealous of.

What I don't understand is, what happens if there is a storm?

    • I once was on board one of worlds latest and biggest sailing freighters (At Åland in the Eastern Baltic). Today that kind of working conditions would be impossible.. People washed aboard, freezing, food running out, sails ripped apart..

A kite is something totally new. It´s a great construction because it´s easily depowered (made to pull less when the wind increases quickly). This is one of the main advantages towards the predecessor windsurfing..

    • So a company basically re-invented something that ships have used for hundreds of years. Not really much of an accomplishment in my opinion.
