"I think that he still is to some extent, and I do not mean that in a negative way"
How is he more of a politician today than you, for example?
I think if it's not your job your are not a politician.

The blessing and curse that is reaped by Al Gore bringing awareness to global warming is the publicity. Al Gore was a politician (I think that he still is to some extent, and I do not mean that in a negative way) and being a politician, he acquired some measure of fame and/or publicity. Because of this fame, he has been able to bring more attention to a serious matter then other scientists to whom the public might say, "who the hell are you?" However, since Al Gore is a focal point for pushing awareness of global warming, he is also a focal point for the resistance. Politicians and companies that make their profits in fossil fuels do not target your average scientist because they do not have a public eye, and therefor do not have to be combated in the same arena of public influence.

Most who attack Gore do not even know who Pachauri is. They usually couldn't name two people who have focused on this issue since, say, 1970. They think the whole thing was made up by Gore. Even funnier, most think he made it up recently. They don't know he started the whole thing back in the 60s as Revelle's student.
