10 Extreme Ways To Hack Global Warming

Scientists have come up with extreme -- some might say crazy -- schemes to counteract global warming. This year saw the most radical geo-engineering ideas yet: man-made volcanoes, orbiting mirror fleets and ocean re-engineering to cool the planet and absorb carbon dioxide.

Some say the extreme temperatures predicted for the near future call for extreme measures. Others say the solutions could be worse than the problem. Check out this top 10 list of the most unorthodox ways to save our planet.

    • Annual plants such as flax and hemp have been used in papermaking for thousands of years.

Trees are made up of approximately 30% cellulose, the other 70% of the tree must be removed using toxic chemicals, until the cellulose can be formed into paper. The higher the percentage of cellulose in a plant, the better, because fewer chemicals need to be used, and less work needs to be done before the paper can be made. Almost any plant in nature with a strong stalk is better suited to make paper than trees, especially hemp because it can be 85% cellulose.

Check this pod about paper from dung:

    • Garlic causes flatulence in many people... This said, there is an eleventh solution - to grow massive amounts of cannabis. Indeed, cannabis is the plant that absorbs many times more carbon dioxide than trees and other plants. It also can be used for clean fuel, for textiles, for making plastic, its seeds are very rich in both vegetable protein and omega-3 oil, it can also be used for making paper, insulation materials for buildings, for medicines to most efficiently treat a very wide spectrum of diseases, etc., etc.

    • The problem with vegetarianism is the extreme lack of support for the idea. Additionally, many organizations (namely PETA) have made the idea seem even more extreme than it already is. With allegations floating around them, ranging from slaughtering pets they are donated to funding domestic terrorist organizations, the idea of vegetarianism just won't set in.

I agree with sgwhites about the assertion of garlic-flavored beef. Absolutely delicious indeed.

    • I like the vertical farming idea myself.

Though, the modified cows idea was also intriguing. I see no problem with garlic-flavored beef. Yummy!

    • Their number 10 would be my number one... the idea is pretty feasible, and in a twisted way.. sensible. Though this is the MOST extreme... and to an extent.. the scyscraper farm is the LEASt extreme.
