Shipping containers turned into homes is the centrepiece of a planned huge new eco-town in Edinburgh's Leith Docks area. The man at the controls says he found himself inspired after visiting the Container Project in East London, a village of 37 units made from the steel crates. The units are likely to be assembled 'like Lego blocks' and stacked up, 'allowing for quick and easy transport of the entire village around the Leith site every few years, to dovetail with the construction of conventional housing, shops and schools in nine new villages'. The company is likely to start by letting the units on short-term leases at cheap rents for artists and workers in the creative industries. Almost every manufactured product humans consume spends some time in a container.

    • I've seen a documentary on this very subject. These container dwellings make awesome apartments or offices, they're very rigid and well able to withstand the same pressures exerted on more traditional structures. The fact that they can be bolted together and to the foundations prepped for them is also another benefit. I would like to know what sort of insulation will be used to keep internal temps down to a minimum. That will be very important in order to not have to use air conditioning on a continual basis. ( Kinda defeats the "green" using too much energy . )

    • I like that..it uses something that is already fabricated so it is Eco friendly.
I also like the idea of Yurts...they an be constructed for $3000 and taken down.
