Scandal, Intrigue on Capitol Hill: Pregnant Moms, Drugs, Baby Zombie Uprising

A new law being considered in the U.S. Congress would attempt to prevent postpartum depression in new moms by allowing doctors to prescribe SSRI antidepressant drugs while they're still pregnant.

SSRI drugs have never been approved for use on newborns, yet this new MOTHERS Act will effectively drug unborn babies and newborns with drugs like Prozac. This will certainly have an impact on their developing brains, and the bulk of the research available today shows that the impact will be negative. Will these children be more prone to violent thoughts and behavior? Will they contemplate suicide at younger ages? And what will be the impact of the drugs on the mother?

This legislation is being aggressively pushed by pro-pharma front groups in an effort to expand the customer base for SSRI drugs by targeting pregnant women as new "customers" for the chemicals.

    • Post Partum is hormonal. It makes me crazy to hear that that the US congress wants to pass this. Antidepressants are not the answer. A womens hormonal levels need to be checked after birth and the rebalanced using bioidentical hormones.

Postpartum Depression is NOT hormonal. It is a form of clinical depression. It is not restricted to women, either; although less frequent, men can experience PPD as well.

Brushing off PPD as "just hormonal" encourages the continuation of a common dangerous misconception which prevents PPD sufferers from seeking the help that they require. It's akin to going up to someone who just had their leg cut off in an industrial accident and telling them that it will grow back and they should just walk it off and get over it.

    • That is absolutely awful! There are far better ways to treat depression than being dependent on drugs. Drugs only alleviate the symptoms they don't address the cause. To even consider drugging pregnant woman as a preemptive strike on postpartum depression is beyond stupid.

    • This is disgusting. I was going to rant about why, but then I decided to pop some Prozac (TM) and now I feel fine about babies growing up on drugs. It's not so sad.
