Energy efficient lightbulbs, a raging menace?!

Nah, just kidding. not a raging menace. but perhaps not as environmentally friendly as the manufacturers want you to know! I mean, I know they're energy efficient. splendid. But here's my beef: they're not that much more energy efficient in the first place. secondly, these little guys contain mercury! it may be small amounts, but still, this is a big concern for landfills and waste incinerators where the mercury from lamps is released and contributes to air and water pollution. Also, if they break, you're in danger. Broken CFLs are an immediate health hazard due to the evaporation of mercury into the atmosphere. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recommends that, in the absence of local guideline, fluorescent bulbs be double-bagged in plastic bags before disposal. yeah that's right, double-bagged in plastic bags. so, um, they're energy efficient but in the end we're double bagging them in plastic bags and once in landfills they contribute to air and water pollution? This sounds like the cons outweigh the pros. and lastly, I'll be frank, they're too bright. I feel like I'm in a sterile clinic in energy efficient lightbulb lighting. it makes me want to scrape my face off with a rake. I'm all about noir ambience, and these just aren't convincing me. your thoughts?

    • They also have an effect on people's energy levels. I don't like them, and I am suspicious of why they are being so mindlessly pushed as if we cannot come up with an idea for something without mercury or some other harmful chemical.
