this is really cool scientific news! although, set aside all of the telescopes and technology that is being developed, we will never be able to venture out into space that far to discover tangible evidence. in my opinion the wonders and "unanswerable questions" of the earth and universe are something we explore once we die. this topic can get really deep and heated but i believe when i die i will be provided with answers to all the questions i never had answers for. whats beyond our universe?? where does a black hole take you??

I'm crossing my fingers for an E.T./Elliot companionship over an Alien/Ellen Ripley fling.

Perhaps those more intelligent races around the universe will have banned testosterone and weenie-waving, or their alien equivalents.

Dear Toughth, I beg to differ. If they get here first, they are by definition more technologically advanced than we are. Who is to say that along with technology their social systems have not evolved simultaneously, making them the most peace loving, harmony seeking beings in the universe? Just because we are a bunch of club-wielding knuckle-dragging thugs with our opposable thumbs on the nuclear button (George Bush arguably the most powerful human we have produced thus far with illustrating my case perfectly) does not mean they have to be. In fact they will HAVE to evolve socially, just like us or they will blow themselves up long before they ever make it to another galaxy. Pizza anyone?

If people beleive that any ET might be coming here for the love and feel good times they had better think about how intelligence evolves. We evolved in the meanest most agressive biosphere, and it forced us to become stonger and more intelligent to survive as a speicies. If whomever comes frome the stars has any type of inteligence they will be the meanesttoughest and smartest left on their homeworld.

i wonder if it has the same number of planets revolving around the sun and such. if so, i wonder what the third from the sun looks like.

Discovering life (even microbial) on any other planet is going to be phenomenal.

If there is life there I hope they're taking better care of their planet than we are. We seem to be doing whatever we can to trash our planet with pollution, disease and war. We're going to look pretty stupid when they come to visit...We should start practicing now in Romulan, Wookie, Vulcan or whatever how to say, "We're sorry, we screwed it up, we are in no shape for visitors at the present time--please check back with us in a couple of millenia and perhaps we'll have our act together by then--meanwhile, here's a beer and pizza to go, thanks for stopping by".

I'd bet my life that life on other planets does not have humans on it. We are but a twig on the tree of evolution here on Earth. We could just as easily not have happened.

By our own fivefold design we are unique to this planet..and that maybe other lifeforms would not look the same from other planets..and that whatever the lifeform the truth is that we are all alone and yet with many connective threads..this is what causes us to search for unique identities. And if god asked you your advice about designing a working model for a universe would it not be that one of the criterias would be to create multiple life possibilities..not to put all your eggs into one basket..I WONDER?

What if they're discovering our system at the same time and deciding it's God playing a joke by holding up a huge mirror?

is it more arrogant for us to think that the universe holds life similar to our own? with its vastness and great omnipotence, isn't it more plausible that human beings are distinctly unique to this planet only and to think otherwise is simply our intrinsic fear of loneliness?
after all, we are only human.

Sooner or later we'll make contact with another race of being. I just hope they're not as dumb as we are.

Only an extremely dim-witted skeptic would think that as vast as the universe is we and only us would be the only intelligent form of life in the known and unknown expanse of space.
It's about time common sense, if nothing at all is vindicated. How can any INTELLIGENT life form be a proponent of such utter rubbish. Get it world, WE ARE NOT ALONE....! - 4 years ago

I suppose, in the past it was difficult to imagine life existing past our home continents, and technology changed that.
So why shouldn't the same happen with planets in other galaxies?

The chances of us being the only planet with intelligent, living species must be low, bearing in mind how epically vast the universe is.
If they're chirpy and friendly like ewoks and wookiees, we're fine. If they're not, we'll have to enforce global harmony by teaming up with the Chinese and Russian to protect Earth. Either way, win win. Sort of.
